When I bought ours at Toys R Us, they scanned the serial number into their system and it shows on our receipt - I bet that info is being transmitted back to Nintendo...

I asked at the electronics register and, after fumbling with the register, the guy told me "it wouldn't let him issue on;" I went to customer service (no line thankfully) and got one without issue. Depends on how in-depth employees have been trained (I think).

Costco, if you have one nearby & a membership, has two-packs and decent discounts on the big games (reg 49.99 for 44 and change).
