New York to Rochester anyone?

I've never traveled Amtrak. Between Xmas and New years I want to go from NYC to Albany to Syracuse to Rochester which seems to be the "Empire Service." Has anyone heard of any great deals and does anyone know if these routes tend to be on-time/late? Would really appreciate any advice! Thanks
