  1. Is there anything currently under $800 comparable to any of the BF deals? Specifically I'm looking for something that can run vista, surf, movies, pictures, and the most basic of games (i.e. Counter-Strike 1.6)

    Thoughts?

I just bought HP Pavilion dv6426us Notebook

Intel Core Duo Processor T2450, 2GHz, with Centrino Technology, 1GB RAM, 160GB Hard Drive, 15.4-inch WXGA TFT Display, 8X DVD+/-RW Drive, Windows Vista Premium - Webcam

    at Office Depot for 649.00 - 10% off - $50 MIR = $534.

The only thing I was not happy about was that we had to go ahead and let the daughter have it for an early Christmas present because there was only a 14 day money back guarantee if we did not like it. She opened last night and played around with it until midnight. With 1GB Vista Premium ran good. Of course she don't have any pitures or anything saved on it yet, but we were very pleased with the out of box item. She was THRILLED. Our main concern was the Processor- we felt like the Intel Centrino Core Duo was the best for that price. Even with the BF deals, we still felt like this was a better deal. We may be wrong, but just or thoughts. Plus, we did not have to fight a crowd our Office Depot was tremendous for service help!!! The manager had just bought himself the same model the last week. I can't remember how long the sale ran, but I know they had some running even through Jan 08. Oh - and I could not find this one on their website. Many deals that they had in the store was not advertised as far as I know. So far we are happy with the deal.

  2. There is one thing in particular to pay attention to in looking at the laptops. So far you've all talked about the AMD Athlon 64 X2 cpu, the dual-core Pentium, and the AMD Turion X2.

What no one has spoken one word about, and is quite important to consider, is battery life and how the various processors will treat that facet of laptop life.

Both the Pentium dual core (the one in the Sony) and the Turion X2, in one of the HP/Compaq laptops, are true mobile computer processors. This means they are designed for lower wattage draw when operating, have some power saving enhancements to reduce wattage draw when the computer is at idle, and run cooler.

On the other hand, the Athlon 64 X2 cpu found in the HP from Best Buy for the $450 price, is a desktop cpu. This is not uncommon as it's much cheaper to take a desktop cpu and jam it into a laptop. May not be the best option, but it sure is cheaper for the maker. But this means the laptop is going to run hotter, the cpu will use more wattage (power) than a mobile processor, and rarely has power saving enhancements (the desktop cpu...at the time the Athlon 64 X2 was created was rarely looked at a place to conserve power, which is different from today, at least from Intel cpu standpoints. Since there still is no AMD equivalent to the Core-based cpus, the Athlons still draw more power in use.)

Just a thing to watch out for. Personally, I'd rather have a mobile processor, either the Intel Pentium dual core (which in the Sony is based on the current Core cpus) or AMD Turion, than a desktop cpu stuck in for cost savings.

Are all Athlon 64 x 2 destop cpu's? I'm looking at the CC 549.00 HP DV6439nr- Does this have the desktop cpu? What is your take on this one? I want this to last for several years so how important do you think it is to be able to upgrade to 4GB RAM? I couldn't be postive about the ads - is this computer a 2 day sale Friday and Saturday?

  3. I am also going for the 51" Hitachi at BB. I just hope they have more then just a couple in stock. Just to be on the safe side I will be going around 2 -3 AM. I hope this is early enough. My second plan is to go to Sears to see if they will price match since it is a 2 day sale.
