  1. We were looking for the Fire 7 tablet 8gb version for the three grandkids. The tablets were $29 down from $49. Looked right after midnight at Target website with no luck, but popped over to Amazon and it was done by 12:05 a.m. We really have no plans to go out on Friday at all, but we probably will visit a couple of stores just to see what's there. There's just nothing out there that I want. Well, except for higher end camera equipment that's too expensive.

  2. I was looking to get two iPhones. I got to the Sam's Club just outside Orlando about 5:20 am for the 7 a.m. opening and I was seventh in line. The $250 gift cards are what drove me to this sale as I figured it would be MUCH easier to get the two upgrades at this event rather than trying on Black Friday at Best Buy or other places. I was impressed with the staff and organization at the Sam's. There were a handful of items that were ticketed and those were passed out in orderly fashion. For the iPhones, they would mark off their list as you told them what iPhone you wanted, including 7 or 7 Plus, GB size, color, and carrier. They didn't have a lot of 256GB phones, but they had a good amount of 128GB phone, which is what I wanted.

The sales people were efficient and did their job well. I was out of there before 8:30 am. I also bought the Samsonite luggage, color decorative lights, movie tickets gift cards and a couple of other small items and paid for all of it with one of the $250 gift cards. The only cash I had to spend was the sales tax for the two phones, which amount to $96 or so.

I consider it a very good deal as those gifts cards will buy a good amount of gas, toilet paper, chicken, etc. and I needed to upgrade the phones anyway.

  3. I tried right at noon to get the iPod Touch with the $50 BB gift card and, like everyone else, all I did was go slowly from page to page until I hit submit order and then it just gave me the error page. Well, I had to attend a meeting for work and it wasn't until 3:45 that could get back to my computer and, lo, and behold, it worked easily then. Bottom line is that I got what I wanted, but BB made it very, very tough by not having enough bandwidth. They should have known they would get slammed. My situation wasn't that it was such a great deal or even the gift card, but that I just didn't want to stand in line on BF. Not good by BB.
  4. Black Friday isn't a good time to invest in a DSLR. The deals usually aren't very good and involve a bundle of things that really you don't need. What type of use will you be getting out of the camera? I'd suggest B&H (bhphotovideo.com), get a body only and then a 50 1.8 mm lens. Now if you are just getting it because you want a camera and don't plan on really investing time/money into honing your skills then buying a camera with the kit lens will do you just fine. If you plan on developing your skills and see where you can go with photography then save yourself the time in line on BF and money and shop at a store devoted to photgraphy such as bh or even a wolf or ritz. 50 1.8 mm is a prime lens ( no zoom so you have to move your body closer or farther from the subject) but it produces exceptional images.

In a nutshell- Black friday is not a good time to buy a DSLR unless you want a bundle of things, but any money saved is eaten up by the "bundle" which you may not really need. Hope this all makes sense :)

I was going to answer the OP question "never, and go to B&H." Perfect response

  5. Last year, I purchased a Nook e-reader for $100 for my wife from my local Walmart. Best Buy had the Nook for $100, but I knew that I wouldn't be able to get it there because I wasn't willing to camp out overnight or even longer. I had scouted my local Walmart and knew they had the Nook. I also had read here that Walmart was price matching on Black Friday. Going to Walmart to get the Nook (its normal price at that time was $149) was very easy even though it was very crowded there on Black Friday. I was the only one who was in electronics for the Nook. Most everyone else was there for the iPod Touch or some other item. The Nook wasn't even on anybody else's radar.

I haven't seen anything yet on whether Walmart will be price matching on Black Friday. Anyone heard anything?
