Expensive Gifts???

Yesterday my husband came home with a $400 watch that was a gift to him from his boss. We definately do not have that kinda money to buy her anything that expensive. This really sucks, because I feel obligated now to spend way more than I want to. I know I shouldn't feel that way, but I do. Anybody have similar issues and what kinda stuff did you buy in return?

Well, apparently his boss can afford to spend that much on a single gift (which is nice!). But I'm totally with you on the dilema it's created, especially if it's not a gift you planned on buying to begin with. With all the clearance sales happening everywhere, I think it's very possible to put together something that may seem expensive but not really have cost as much as the recipient would think. Or even if you don't spend as much - but put a lot of thought into it??

Let us know what you find!

She may not have actually spent $400 - she could have gotten it as a gift, on clearance or won in a raffle. Personally, I would give a fruit basket with some cookies or a basket with her favorite candy if she has one. Does she drink tea or coffee at a certain place, they might have a basket of their products you could purchase.

When it comes from higher ups in a company, I don't feel obligated to gift them an item around the same price. In fact, I don't feel that obligation even with family and friends. How bad is that? But maybe that's because we all generally spend around the same amount, I think anyway. Plus, we're all understanding of when someone can't afford to spend as much (understanding isn't the word, it's more like we don't pay much attention really).

Anyway, in this instance - I agree with w1df10wr.

And I'd bet the boss does NOT expect a gift in return near the same amount of what the watch is worth!!

I wish that was the case :) I would feel better, but I am pretty sure she really did pay that much. It is in the jewelers gift bag with a gift receipt. My husband works at a nightclub and so they are really close (I would even call them friends). So she's not like this big shot of a corporation that sent out her secretary to purchase the gifts for her. She actually went out and picked gifts for a selected few that work there. She is so hard to buy for, because she has everything, including a 2008 Hummer and a $200,000 plus salary!
