I was just at Best Buy and CompUSA buying copies of XP Pro for some iMacs and Mac Pros that I just got for the office and I was told by the manager at both stores that Microsoft will stop shipping XP to stores in 2 weeks and when they are gone they are gone for good. The manager at BB said that he can't keep XP in stock becuase when people buy new computers they come back 2 weeks later to get XP because they dont like Vista.

Problem is XP cost $100-$300 depending on which version you get. Which probably cost 80% of the BF PC. Making the deal not quite worth it.

Very true but some people can't stand Vista and in some cases you will spend more in RAM if you stay with Vista. I am just giving the people heads up.

I don't know where the information was gotten by the sales-lackies you talked to, but Microsoft has a firm date of January 31, 2008 as its closing date for Windows XP availability....NOT in two weeks. Methinks your chain was being pulled or they were either sadly misinformed or just trying to hype sales of XP. XP should and will be available until the end of January....

 

Microsoft's Windows Life-Cycle...OEM and Retail License Availability (end date)

 

If you can get a license, you can get XP.....simple as that.

 

 

And as for Vista and being stuck with it....Microsoft has always offered a downgrade option on some versions of Vista to XP; it's just been rather convoluted and difficult to utilize. Now, apparently, Microsoft has bent to public opinion and has started making it easier to downgrade to XP from Vista.....as long as you have Vista Business or Ultimate....Vista Home version users are stuck with Vista.

I was shown a memo by a store manager at the local BB so that is what I based my info on. The memo had a microsoft letterhead on it. I shall try to get a copy and post it.

 

I have known you can downgrade if you have Ultimate and or Business. My company got a rock bottom deal from Apple and everything is being switched to Apple with Windows XP being installed on the backside.

XP is one trillion times better than vista. I bought a VERY expensive computer (upwards of $4000) and it came with Vista Ultimate on it. I tried it for a day or so, nope! Not for me! Went out and bought XP Pro the day after. Though, I do admit... I'm a Mac kinda person, Windows is not ALL bad. (just mostly... ;))

You cannot go wrong with going Apple! What are you using for Windows? VMware, Parallels, or Boot Camp?

I am using Boot Camp. It takes less memory to run. On the Mac Pro's I am installing a 500GB HD in the second HD bay and doing a complete XP Pro install. On the iMacs I am doing a 100BG partion on a 1TB drive and putting XP Pro on it. Most of the software we use have a Mac version so we are happy. The reason we did this big switch is we got a great deal from Apple and Apple computers last longer then PCs. We are looking to get a good 6 years before a major upgrade on the iMacs and longer with the Mac pros since you can put new parts in it at anytime.

Due to customer demand, most major companies, especially Dell, are really pusing hard to make XP available to everyone who wants it pre-installed for as long as they possibly can. But I agree, time is running out. End of next january for us non-system builder license folks. Perhaps when the first Vista service pack becomes readily available to us cunsumers maybe we'll start warming up towards Vista. But 'till then, let's keep those copies of XP comming as long as possible.

I agree Vista is not that bad and most of the programs are starting to be vista capable. It just takes some getting used to. No One likes change.

True. :D You can buy legit copies and licenses of every PC OS from Vista to XP all the way down to ... version 1.0! :eek: Ah, the IBM PC memories.

 

If you do take this route, remember to be careful and check into these things first before you agree to buy. Don't wanna buy a bad copy or a pirated license. :gdparanoid:

Anyhoo, it's inevitable that Vista will eventually become the standard for all newly purchased PCs. Maybe with the release of the first service packs that fixes a good portion of the compatability issues, and as technology becomes cheaper while more memory/faster processors becomes more the standard. Remember all the complaints about XP when it first came out and how long it took for it to grow on everyone. And no one better get me started on Windows ME (first and only warning :mad: ). I'll give Vista the credit it's due, but until it impresses me I'll be demanding XP. :razz:

Actually, it wasn't you at all... The guilty parties know who they are. You can't see the posts that I removed.

 

Gadgets are really nice in Vista, BTW. And it's definitely more attractive than XP (and XP ran rings around Win98, WinME and Win2K).

 

One thing they have to work out (hopefully in this service pack) is having all of the folders default to MY CHOICE of layout, rather than a layout based on the contents of the folder. Oh well. Until then, I'll just use UltraExplorer (http://www.mustangpeak.net/ultraexplorer.html). Heck, I might stick with UltraExplorer even if the service pack fixes the issue.

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) said on Thursday it plans to keep selling its Windows XP operating system until the end of June 2008, delaying a scheduled transition to its newer Windows Vista software by five months.

 

 

The world's largest software maker introduced Windows Vista in January with the plan to phase out sales of its predecessor, Windows XP, by January 30, 2008.

 

Microsoft said it decided to extend XP sales in response to feedback from computer manufacturers who said there were customers who still wanted to buy the older operating system.

 

Some customers have voiced displeasure with Vista due to a lack of compatibility with existing software programs and devices. The hardware requirements needed to run Vista also are a significant upgrade from many older computers.

 

The company downplayed any dissatisfaction with Vista, saying it is the fastest-selling operating system in the history of Microsoft. As of the end of June, Microsoft had sold more than 60 million Windows Vista licenses.

 

Microsoft said the top 50 consumer software applications now have a Vista-compatible version and it provides support for more than 2.2 million devices. The Windows operating system sits on about 95 percent of the world's computers.

 

The Redmond, Washington-based company also said Microsoft historically makes its older operating system available to customers for two years after the new one is introduced, but it decided to shorten that period to one year with Vista.

 

"We were a little ambitious to think that we would need to make Windows XP available for only a year after the release of Windows Vista," said Mike Nash, a Microsoft corporate vice president.

 

Microsoft has forecast that XP will account for about 22 percent of Windows sales in the current year to June with Vista comprising the remainder. The company said it plans to update this forecast when it announces quarterly results in October.

 

The company also said it plans to extend sales of the most basic Windows XP Starter Edition for very low cost computers in emerging markets until June 30, 2010. It had also planned to stop sales of that system in January.

YAY!!! Extended!

 

Anyway... the only reason I HATE vista is because it is so much harder for us developers to work with. It's still DLL Hell!:mad: There is still that thing called Activation! :eyepoppin There is still something called a registry,:eek: and it just dosen't work with some of the high-end products I use when developing. Common Microsoft... just copy Apple some more. :cool: It'll all work out, but I'm sticking to Paralles on my iMac, Bootcamp on the Mac Pro, and Windows XP Pro on my other machines. Oh... not to mention Windows Server (xxx) (Can't mention the name... I'm a developer and I'm beta testing :rolleyes: ) on my server in the basement. Vista is just too damn complicated and just too freakin' "mean!" :yuck:

I think it was zdnet/cnet that recently ran quite a few programs thought the paces and found that XP is still quicker across the board with the same setups. Yes, you do get more bells and some whistles (aero), but really could care less about 95% of them.

EXACTLY!!! :yup: They look cool, but they are not functional. Now, with that said, the way that Apple inplements Aqua (hmmm...Aqua Aero... ;)) it just works and you don't even relize it, but you are using Aqua all the freakin' time!
