"Forum Policies" PM Discussion Thread

GottaDEAL

Recommended Posts

For those who haven't gotten the PM yet (it will take a while to be sent to everyone), here it is:

Hello GottaDeal Forum :)

I know it's rare to get a message like this from us, but there are a few things we wanted to make you aware of, and since not everyone views every thread posted, this seemed like the best option to do that.

We are just a couple months away from the Black Friday site and forums opening up. As many of you are aware of, once the Black Friday site is open, the amount of activity on the forum will increase dramatically, pretty much overnight, and it will stay that way for months. It will be common to have hundreds of people on the forum at any given moment, and so we have a few things to ask of you in preparation for that craziness.

First, before posting a new thread in any forum, we ask that you please search to make sure a similar thread has not been posted already.

Second, if you see a thread or a particular post that is a repost, or might be spam, or otherwise doesn't belong, please use the "report bad post" button (the red button with the X to the left of the post) and let us know about it. It is very helpful if a thread is a repost that you also include a link to the original thread. Also, please include the reason for your report in the comments section. This will become even more important as we get many new members and many more posts and it becomes even more difficult for us to find them all ourselves.

For more information on searching and reporting reposts, see this announcement thread on the forum that was posted a few months ago: http://forums.gottadeal.com/announcement.php?f=2 We'd like to thank those of you who have been reporting posts as you've seen them. That has helped us greatly over the last few months.

Also, just a reminder that no referral or affiliate links are permitted in the forum without prior consent. This includes all forums including deals, freebies, surveys and contests. If an offer requires a referral link in order for others to take advantage of it, please get permission before posting it.

In addition to referral links in posts, as of today, any kind of referral or affiliate link is no longer permitted in your signature without prior consent from Brad or RossMAN. This includes ALL referrals with the exception of your forum referral link which allows you to earn GottaPoints if someone registers on the forum using your link. Also, links to other sites which have referral or affiliate links (such as other deal sites or other affiliate-related sites) are also not permitted.

Next, we are seeing an increase in the size of signatures on the board. In an effort to keep load times down for everyone, we have asked in the past that your signatures are not taller than 100 pixels in total. This is equal to about 4 lines of text. For images, you can see the size of them by right clicking and selecting properties. Many of you have the ticker-type graphics which are usually under 100 pixels, so you may still have one of those, but not more than one. We also ask that signatures are not centered in the middle of the page - keep them on the left side only.

We are going to give everyone a couple of days to remove or change your signatures. After that time, if we see signatures that don't follow these rules, we will manually either remove or change them. Because of the time involved, we will not be able to contact each person individually explaining why this was done, which is why we are letting you know about it now.

Also, at some point before the Black Friday forum opens up, signatures will be disabled for the duration of the Black Friday craziness. This will help load times, and give the forum a cleaner, more organized look. You can still use your member pages during this time should you need to post something that would have normally gone in your signature. You will still be able to "personalize" your posts via your custom avatar and user title if you have enough posts to do so.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation on these matters. We have created a thread in the Discuss GottaDeal.com forum where you can post any comments, questions or suggestions about these items, and you can view that thread here: http://forums.gottadeal.com/showthread.php?t=44020

So thanks again for being a member, and we'll see you on the forum :)

Brad & RossMAN

This just gets me all giddy about the BF excitement.

Hopefully all members will understand the type of strain that puts on a server and why these permanent and temporary changes are needed.

Props to the GD admins for communicating with their users and letting them know what is going to happen and not just blind siding them.

Oh yeah, just wondering why you haven't asked that those of us that keep GottaDeal open 24/7/365, even when we are not actually at our computers to quit it? Or, am I the only one who does this?

Do you mean the forum page (or any GottaDeal web site page)? Eventually you drop off of the active members list at the bottom. Also, you aren't using resources of GD's by leaving the page up. Unless of course you have a macro refreshing the page every few minutes (for whatever silly reason). LOL.

Right, just leaving the window open doesn't make a difference at all, so don't worry about that :)

Thought I was in trouble for something too...

Do you want the "ticker factory" that appears at the bottom of my posts removed? I'm not sure what the correct terminology for it is or if that's what you're talking about.

That's what we were talking about. One of them in your signature is fine :)
