You could break up your purchases and "roll" your ECB into the next purchase, paying a small amount for each transaction. As I've gotten older I find I have less patience, so I'll just buy everything and get all the ECB at once. And then I'll get the things that are on sale but don't give ECB and apply those earned ECB.
