I am looking for a deal on a chromebook for DD7. DS10 got the Samsung that was on sale last BF at Walmart and it’s still doing great for what he uses it for.

They use chromebooks in school and rarely have to print as they can just submit assignments online. The chromebooks work well for their YouTubing too.

I ended up with a much better than BF laptop deal during the early November Best Buy sale last year.   It was one of those in-store sales that even the employees didn't know anything about until I asked and then they had to go find the laptop bundle (which was actually in a bundle box). $299 for an HP 15.6" laptop with touchscreen and optical drive, good AMD processor, decent graphics and 8GB RAM.  Accessories were way less important than the laptop itself.  If you're looking for a laptop this year, I'd say fixate on your specs first, especially if you're not overly brand-loyal, and then just start looking at the weekly ads for price comparisons.

Bought this for DD 14 last year in Sept/Oct and just hid it.  She loves it and it seems to be holding up to teenage care !  She plays SIMS on hers all the time - I have not heard any complaints.  I need a new one for me since mine is 7 yrs old and slooooowww... sorry I bought the red on for her now.... ;)

I am wanting to get DD14 a laptop for Christmas. Sams Club is having a good sale on Nov 11. Is there a major difference between an i5 and i7 processor. She will be using it for school work, and would like to do some simple graphic design. Is there anything I should be looking for  This is the one in the ad I am looking at.

I love the specs, let's keep this on the burner for comparison in a few weeks. If someone really wants to bite now, what is the return window? The charge account discount could be a game changer if you really have the cash and pay it off without a fee.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you can get on sale for Black Friday. But...the last time I bought a laptop, I found the prices before Black Friday in early November were as good or better.

Generally, all of November leading up to Black Friday is the proverbial Duck Season of purchasing. Check return policies as well.

Anytime someone mentions graphic design, I envision a laptop with an Intel i7 processor and a dedicated graphics card, since the verbiage "simple graphic design" may not be good enough to run a program once you buy it. Be sure to check the specs on the product packaging before buying any laptop. Do you have a program in mind?  Since you were looking at a $600 laptop, the i7 on page nine of the one day sale will have the same price and looks to have a dedicated card as well.

I would agree with the pre-BF sales.  I got my new HP laptop last year from Sam's during their early/mid November sale.

15.6" with optical drive, intel core I5 7th generation, 12GB RAM and 1TB hard drive, HD display.  There might have been a better deal on BF itself for these specs but honestly I was happy to get it at $379 and get it off my plate before the BF rush.

I just looked at the Sam's one day (Nov. 11) sale ad this weekend.  Appears they have 3 HP laptops at good prices that day.  Of course my DD wants Dell not HP. I have pics on my phone of the three I'll try and post them.

That Pavillion with the 8th gen i7 and the GT940mx graphics looks interesting.

Even has a DVD drive, number pad keyboard and a touchscreen. (though I don't see the optical drive in any of the pics...?)

Would love to see a bigger battery for it (it's only 3 cell 41WHr according to the website here).

Is that one touch? I'll have to tell her to go look at it, as she wants a touch.  I'm so glad she's buying her own. lol

Thoughts on this laptop. Teenager for school work and games like minecraft

Link not working at the moment?

I guessed you're looking at this one:

There's a video of the same Intel i3 7100U processor with the onboard Intel HD 620 graphics just like this laptop has running minecraft right here.

It looks sufficient, but as the review says, this is with no addons.

I am hoping someone can help me figure out the minimum specs I need in a new laptop. I know that it must have a 17-inch screen and have a full keyboard with number pad. I need it to be able to run Office and Quickbooks (Both memory and ram intensive from what I'm told) lite gaming (SIMS and Minecraft) and the usual email, youtube, and web surfing. I need it to be able to do all of these things without lag. I prefer HP but would consider other options and don't really have a set budget I'd like to stay around $700 but if I have to spend more to get the specs I need then I will. It's just very hard to even attempt to shop when I'm not sure exactly what it is I need in terms of the specs. Please advise....all replies are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.  That is the one, I think my copy from my phone cut some of it off.  Looks like it will work for what I want.  May just hold off a week or so to see what we get in any ads before pulling the trigger since I need 2 of them

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm in need of a new laptop with i7 and an optical drive, and I can't find one anywhere! Has anybody seen one???

I do a lot of photo / video editing and all my stuff, including past work and 3rd party programs, is archived on dvds, so this is a must. I can't even find options to add an internal dvd drive on the hp and dell websites where you can supposedly "customize". The only option they have is a clunky, inelegant, pain in the neck external drive with a cord attached.

Help???

ETA: I see the one posted in the Sam's Club ad! Looks perfect! Although, like you said, I can't see the drive in the pics either (?)

Okay now that all the ads are here I am leaning toward this one from Best Buy.  Any thoughts on it.  Not a brand I am familiary with but the review seem decent

For example, the first ASUS will play League of Legends with 60+ fps on high settings. All of those will also run Minecraft very well, and games like DOTA 2 and Sims 4 on medium settings.

I bought a high end Lenovo (about $1100) about 2 years ago and the hard drive died in 2 months.  Took it back to Best Buy and they refused to exchange it.  Sent it in for warranty service and I had to wait about 6 weeks to get it back because the drives were out of stock.  After getting it back I had problems with the WiFi and discovered the WiFi card wasn't powerful enough, so I had to buy a better one and install it.  I chose it because of the great reviews both with customers and pros, but I would be hard pressed to recommend them.
