Black Friday Line Reports

I was near my local Target (shopping in another store nearby) with about 30 minutes left before Target opened their doors tonight. Looked like no more than 20 people in line over there. Far, FAR cry from the hundreds of folks that used to line up outside that one.

Went by all of the big stores around 1pm today and the only ones with lines were Best Buy and Target. Target had maybe 4 people and Best Buy around 20. Came back to town around 5:30 and Target line went all the way to the other end of the building. Hit Kohls and got in line was close enough to get one of the 100 free movie tickets. Hit Best Buy about 8:30 and it was still a zoo. Called it a night.

I have nothing to report prior to opening times, but I got to Kohl's 90 minutes after opening and there were definitely people in the store aisles, but upon checkout, there were only 20 ahead of me with 6 registers open and only waited in line less than 5 minutes.

Dicks Sports was pretty empty 2 hours after opening.

Walmart 2 hours after opening still had a wide variety of Blu Rays left, and cashiers standing out in front of their registers pulling customers in that were ready to check out - no troubles there.

Our local best buy had about 60-70 people in line prior to opening.

Target had maybe 40 people lined up with quite a few people still sitting in their vehicles waiting to make their move once the doors opened.

Kohls had a very big crowd standing in line. At least 70-80 id say.

...And ONE person is camped outside in a sleeping bag at Five Below  :sidesplit  FIVE BELOW PEOPLE!!! Wish I had thought of asking him what he plans on getting! sheesh!!!

I am in Florida, and we had heat the entire time during the nights we spent in comfort.

It still amazes me, after all these years how people show up at the last minute and then do nothing when other people cut in front of them. As the Mayor, I can not get involved in line disputes, only give advice to those affected. When you are given advice and just sit there, you deserve to come up emptyhanded. As always, those who show up on time and you develop a good rappour, the first ten to twenty have nothing to worry about and the group knows what to do about line cutters.

As the mayor, you can and should be involved.  It's called keeping the peace and your policemen are known as peace keepers.  Simply posting officers near the front of long lines will discourage cutting.

I bought all online except Menards that opened their stores Friday at 6 am.   By myself, I packs a chair, blanket, and hand warmers and heading to Menards to camp out at midnight.  Got there and 5 people already there.  Store had put up barriers in front of doors and blocked the entire front sidewalk to stop people rushing the doors.  Unpacked and settled in for the 6 hour wait.   Made new friends, exchanged deals, etc. Good times! My husband and daughter showed up at 5 am to pack up my stuff and help me. By the time doors opened, the line wrapped around store, down entire parking lot, past taco Bell down the street!!  The field across the street filled up.   Never seen the like!!!  Everyone behaved. I got all my items and then some  (impulse buys lol).   All in all, good night. First time I camped in a long time.

Well done.  That was no warm night last night; thought not the coldest BF either.  Menards is always so busy because it's really the only thing opening on Friday morning that's worth going to.  I had DD5 & DS4 for the day, so I naturally had to wait for them to wake up.  I was up at 5:45 ready to go and DS4 decided to sleep in til 6:55 this morning.  Got there, made the mistake of not grabbing a cart from the parking lot, zig zagged through the store for my ~10 items, got everything on my list, waited 10 minutes to check out (the store was crowded, but not overly ridiculous when we checked out at 8:00).  Plus, I let the kids run around and check out all the inflatables before we got in line to check out.  Then we hit Petsmart and then Dunkin Donuts - so it's wasn't all that bad for them ;)

What time did the line really start to pick up some gusto?  I feel like I've been there around 1 hour prior to opening to see if really pick up rapidly all the way until opening.

My husband had his list and section , my 15 1/2 yr old had hers, and I had mine. We got all our items (plus me seeing some things and throwing them in my cart) and  met by the mill work desk to go over ad and make sure we didn't forget anything.  Then went to the front registers and checked out within 20 minutes.  We only had to wait 5 minutes or so. People already following people out of the store to get their carts. I had too many items to carry so she followed us and once we unpacked everything in my car she took it and left.  After we left there we went to Lowes to pick up my .99 Poinsettias. Then went to breakfast.  My neighbor was pulling into her driveway from Menards  around 9 am when  she told me the lines reached the back of the store.  and they opened the outside registers too in Lawn and Garden.

Went to Home Depot in Novi, MI this morning for batteries, Christmas lights, a couple other small things. Got there around 5 am, there were maybe 10 folks already there. It started raining harder while folks were waiting, so they let us into the entryway. Inside, much to our surprise, they had doughnuts, coffee, and hot cocoa from the local Tim Horton's they were handing out to all of us early birds. Awesome. The staff handed out maps for all the popular items and answered any questions we had. At 6, the crowd had grown to a few dozen at least. They moved the gates and let us loose. Cruised through the store, collected the items I was looking for, and walked right up to a register to checkout. Well done, Home Depot.

I got there Tuesday and did not see the first person until Wednesday night... then he waited in his car until about 3:00 PM. A few people started showing up about 2:30 PM, but they all waited in their cars until the first person made a dash for the door... then all 20 to 30 got our of their vehicles.

People at best buy were waiting as long as possible to hand out tickets hoping a line would form. I think the only thing they sold out of was the 49" TV.

I think the rain combined with temps in the 30's kept everyone away until the last minute.

To be honest, though, I did most of my shopping from my cell phone Thursday while I was in the tent. I only picked up the 2 large items I cane for and a few DVD's.
