Unofficial Black Friday Surround Sound thread

Recommended Posts

I wanted to start a thread for anyone who had questions on purchasing speaker set-ups for their HDTVs this Black Friday. You never hear too much about this in the forums, but there are lots of sales on speakers and equipment; so someone is buying them during BF. I mentioned it during the webcast a week or so ago, but thought I'd open this up to anyone that might have questions on types of speakers and set-ups or why I said to stand clear of sound bars. I'm not an expert, but have had several different A/V receivers and various speaker configurations over the last 20 years or so. I'm sure others with some knowledge will also chime in to help you out.

Pretty good deal on those Klipsch at 50% off. I picked up the Pioneer Andrew Jones SP-FS52-LR ($75 ea), SP-C22 ($50), SP-BS22-LR ($100 for both). A great deal on great speakers without breaking the bank. The reviews are outstanding for speakers in this price range and the sound they produce. I'm not an expert, but I am enjoying them a lot. Lots more rich and full sound than my old Bose and Polk satellite speakers. You could always just replace part of your system and take advantage of the sale then buy the rest later.

It looks like Newegg.com is putting the Andrew Jones Pioneer speakers on sale for Black Friday. It is a heck of a deal for what you get. They are not perfect, but for the money, they are hard to pass up. Below is a link to the deal (it's on page 3 of the Newegg ad) and a couple of reviews to judge for yourself.

Review #1

Review #2

If you are looking for speakers and have a little room for speakers, check these out before buying a soundbar or such (especially if you are on a budget)

Is anyone considering this or have it? Since it's Bluetooth can I use it to stream iPhone through it?

This

Should have no issues streaming music via the Bluetooth. Having the subwoofer will help with bass sound when watching movies, but don't really know how well music will sound coming from a sound bar. I'm sure it will sound decent enough (not because of the brand, but because of it being a sound bar). Sound bars will not have a rich full sound like you would get from larger speakers, but sound bars are a good way to save on space and money. Best Buy has a Vizio on sale for $99 on BF, but I think I would prefer the LG with the subwoofer.

BTW, the LG Sound bar is LIVE at this price now at BestBuy and HHgregg. Reviews seem positive . :gdcool:

Here is another one I found. It's a Vizio with more speakers for $199 at Best Buy. (Live now)

BTW, a soundbar is not what I would consider surround sound.  It will probably be an improvement over the TV's internal speakers, but inexpensive soundbars in particular are really just that.  They most likely won't have the ability to intelligently adjust the delay for the rear channels and bounce the sound off side and rear walls to mimic the effect of surround sound.

Agree. If you can afford it and have the space, a nice set of speakers and A/V receiver will do wonders. You'll wonder why you didn't get them sooner ;).

I'd like to buy and hook up a very small (but hopefully decent quality!) surround sound system for my parents' house. My dad's hearing gets worse every year, so I'd like to get something where I can position a 1-2 speakers closer to him and 1-2 other speakers in other parts of the room-- so he no longer has to turn the TV up so loud (and maybe Mom and I can still have conversations in another room while he watches his westerns- LOL!). We've tried the wireless headphones for him, but he found them uncomfortable and stopped wearing them, so this is the only other option I'm aware of!

Can anyone help me find something (BF or otherwise) that will work for this? I'm guessing under $50 won't happen, but is there still hope for $75 or less?? Thanks!

When my sons were younger, I bought some $10 computer speakers and installed them in the head side bolsters of their carseat.  Plug them into the headphone jack of the DVD player and waalaa, they can listen to whatever movie they want to and I don't have to hear it or worry about the headphones falling off their head.  Perhaps if your dad has a favorite seat (lazyboy), you can mount some small speakers to it and accomplish something similar.

...I wonder if this idea has been copyrighted...

With today's technology, a Bluetooth speaker attached to the rear of the seat (mounted upside down to get proper left/right panning of the sound) may get the job done...I wonder what that would sound like.  May have to try it.

Interesting ideas, Pnambic- thanks! With the computer speakers, I'm thinking the cord length would be an issue, unless there are longer cords available...

And I'm not sure how/if Bluetooth speakers work in relation to HDTVs-- I know they can be used for iPads, iPhones, iPods, etc, but I've never seen or heard anyone using them with a TV... Can it be done, and if so, how??

$20 Bluetooth transmitter --> http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=108&cp_id=10823&cs_id=1082703&p_id=9722&seq=1&format=2

And it uses USB power - most HDTV's have a powered USB port on the back panel somewhere which makes it easy to run off the power already going to the TV.

And I'm probably over-thinking it trying to get a speaker on either side of their head.  If there's a side table near the seat, any old Bluetooth brick speaker will do and he would be able to move it to any spot he wanted if necessary.

Music doesn't really play in surround sound, but certain settings on a receiver will simulate it. It usually just comes from your front speakers (L & R).As you mentioned, the sound bar above will give you sound via Bluetooth streaming from your phone.
