rwking75 Posted October 30, 2014 Share Posted October 30, 2014 A couple of retailers have some out and said they are NOT opening on Thanksgiving day this year, while others have pushed times earlier and earlier on Thanksgiving. okannie Posted October 30, 2014 Share Posted October 30, 2014 I strongly dislike the Thursday store openings! Thanksgiving Day should be about enjoying family gatherings, football and food. I loved the fun of going out early in the a.m. Friday morning after an enjoyable Thanksgiving Day to shop for all the deals. We would get in lines, do our shopping and then have brunch. Now with so much on Thursday, a lot of the fun is gone plus there are twice the people crowding in the stores at the earlier times. It doesn't mean better sales as a lot pick it up only to ditch it at the register or around the store. So many of the stores have multiple sales all through the night which I don't like either because we live about 40 minutes away from where we shop so it is hard to hang around all through the night for all the different hours of the sales. With the old way, all on Friday, most of the sales would be at 5 a.m. with a few late ones at 10 a.m. which was perfect. 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I miss going and standing in the line, talking with other BF shoppers, while waiting for the store to open. When it as on Fridays, it was crowded, but not nearly as crowded as it is now. There are also more younger children out who are tired, ill, and crying (who can blame them). There are also more teens out. I have teens of my own, and if they wanted to go BF shopping that would be fine. However, mine know how to behave themselves. Most of the teens that are in the stores are rude and disrespectful. Now, we also have to deal with grocery shoppers! For the past few years there have actually been people in Walmart with a full buggy of groceries!!!! I do not like being out all night!!! We used to have Thanksgiving dinner around 5:00 in the evening. Then, we would finish around 8:00. I would get out all my ads and look at them again (because I was just so excited!!). Then, I would take about a 3 hour nap, getting up around 1:00 A.M., pack a couple of drinks and snacks, and head out the door (everyone knew not to expect me home until at least 5 or 6 the next evening)! Now, we've had to move our Thanksgiving dinner up to around 11:00 or 12:00 and I have to leave the house around 3:00 (which may end up being earlier this year depending on what time Walmart opens) and go deal with all the babies and toddlers and others just there to see the madness. I always went out years ago when it seemed like KMart was the only one open Thanksgiving day. But I preferred the excitement of the 6am opening on Black Friday Morning! If you think about the people who need the money and don't get paid for time off and/or they can get paid extra on top of that for working a holiday, then I don't see anything wrong with it. A lot of opinions I have read seem to come from people who either don't work or they get paid time off or it doesn't effect their income either way. On the other hand, it is nice to have a holiday off-even just one day-so people can relax and enjoy the time with their families or whatever. I wish there could be a happy medium for those that want to work vs. those who want to take the holiday. It would also be nice if the stores let their employees decide and if they have enough volunteers then stay open. Now as a BF shopper, I don't want to say "I think people should stay home on Thanksgiving" and then go out and support Thanksgiving openings by shopping on that day because I want to get a good deal. So that is why I'm on the fence about it. If the employees don't want to work and the store is closed, I'll respect that but at the same time if another store has something I want and they are open then I'll shop there because I don't mind getting out on Thanksgiving to shop. Which is exactly why the stores are opening earlier and earlier. As long as we keep shopping on Thanksgiving and just complain about it, the stores will continue to open earlier. Hubby works on Friday so I would have to pay for a sitter to shop in store (that's 10.00 an hour even if the kids are still asleep!) Granted I may miss on some door busters but since we host I refuse to move my dinner time earlier or kick guests out early so I can go shopping. Any MUST haves I will try to order online. I do prefer the 4/5 am openings but would setting for 10 pm/Midnight openings. Thing is, I have several friends in retail who are basically given no choice (either work Thanksgiving or lose your job). They know this going in but it still sucks for them, as they are often having to be back in (or work all night) for Black Friday as well. Leads to exhausted cranky employees who have to deal with exhausted cranky shoppers and it's just not a good combination. The stores really could do a better job of making sure their staff (especially those on the overnight) get enough of a break from the madness to maintain their sanity. And we as shoppers also need to remember to keep our sanity as well, remember the golden rule, and treat the employees with as much kindness as we can muster, especially when things go wrong and need fixing. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Thursday sale starts is our new reality and we will just have to make the most of it (whatever that means for each of us individually). I will shop on line and go out after our dinner and family time (10 or later) and if I miss some deals so be it. Not really looking for much this year and I understand those that go out to make their dollar stretch to give more. I know it is hard on the employees to work and not get that family time but most know that going into the job. My son works for Disney and works the holidays every year. We try to work around his schedule and he tries to get his schedule so that he volunteers to work the times that work best for our get togethers but that does not always work. It used to be exciting to get up early, pack our coffee and snacks and set out for several hours of shopping. With the Thanksgiving opening, we've lost that. Plus, the sales just don't seem to be as good. For the first time in many years, we didn't go at all last year. I go out every year and the fun of it is going to bed on Thanksgiving night knowing that you are getting up early while its still dark and heading out to shop on FRIDAY. That's why its called black FRIDAY not Black Thanksgiving Thursday. I miss the 5am start times on Friday. Retailers just want to extend the times in hopes of extending their profits. Why not have a separate sale on Thanksgiving if they choose to do so but keep Black Friday as Black Friday. I dislike the fact that there are too many people out there who are "not" shopping and just hanging around, which makes it difficult for those of us that are.
