Newspapers charging more for Black Friday ads

There was a big stink a while back because our local paper advertises a year's worth of papers .. but then they start deducting for additional fees .. like the extra price for the paper that has all the BF ads, and the papers they give you on holidays, etc.

so when they say a year's worth of papers - you actually only get about 48 weeks instead of the 52.

I still  like to go through the paper ads even though I have already seen them on this site thanks to Brad, the mods and many others that help out in this busy time. I would pay the price of a Sunday paper for the Thanksgiving paper but not the day before because there isn't anything in there around here except for Kmart which has their Thanksgiving day sale on Wednesday here because of blue laws.

Nothing beats the hard copy. We complain when the price gouge sets in, swearing that we will not pay the price increase, yet many of us still cross that line to get the ads in our hands, even though the digital editions are made easier with the advent of the tablets.

It is almost as if a tradition is lost if we don't buy at least one or two papers. We are to remind you to check those papers and buy early. Some unscrupulous person may take the circulars and only buy one paper in the process.

The paper is still the most popular item on the line. The only problem is that shoppers may not have as much decision making time due to earlier store openings.

Just got my renewal for my paper for Sunday only which includes the holiday editions (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc) at no additional cost for only $13.01 for 52 weeks. Can't beat that just glad they don't charge us the extra fee

Wow!!

Our "big" paper is $22 a MONTH! It's everyday.

The small local one that comes once a week is $45 per year. Rarely are there any ads in this paper. Maybe Fleet Farm and Walgreens.

The article mentioned the Detroit Free Press charging more on Thanksgiving, like this was a "new" thing.  Unfortunately,  this will be at least the third year they will be charging us $2 for the Thanksgiving paper.  It is a big paper though.    I guess after 3 years we've all just gotten used to paying more for our paper on Thanksgiving.

I don't see what the big deal is paying extra if you get all the inserts if you get the single issue.  I would pay Sunday prices if it had them all in there. I understand the fuss if you subscribe and they spring on the extra charges to you though.

It won't matter in a few years when Black Friday will be Black Monday and all the ads will be in the Sunday paper anyways.  The way it keeps moving up, I bet that will happen by 2020.  It's not like Amazon doesn't do it anyways.

You know, it would be worth it if they would guarantee that all the ads were there. I get two papers, and there will be mulitples of some and others I can't get my hands on. Ads are all online these days, but having the paper one in your hand is still king.

I have never been a regular newspaper reader (though I read articles online for free) and Thanksgiving is the only day of the year that I buy a newspaper for the ads, so I understand if they charge a bit more that day than a regular Thursday.  Despite the fact that I don't subscribe, I think that newspapers still provide a critical service to society and democracy, so I think of the extra cost as a small contribution to a valuable but struggling business.

More to the point though, while I print and carry my personal Shopping List created on GottaDeal to direct me, I also still like to have the printed ads for Black Friday.  I generally walk into each store with my printed list and the ad for that store.
