Hanukkah starts on Thanksgiving

It's possible but I think it will have more to do with BF/Thanksgiving being closer to xmas than anything else.

I agree; those 3 weekends between Thanksgiving & Christmas will mean retailers pushing out deals earlier. Another thing that will be affecting sales is the gov't shutdown depending on how long it continues and if and when a lot of those workers get paid.

I think you will see some sales starting early since Hanukkah starts on thursday.  You may start to see the sales start early in some Jewish areas as the Hanukkah does start at sundown.

Most non Jewish people don't realize that Hanukkah is not a major Jewish holiday.  It did not become a major Jewish holiday until the 1950's in the US.  It only became a major gift giving holiday because of xmas.

The Jewish-owned B&H Photo Superstore is just a block from my office in Manhattan.  As a Jewish owned and operated business, they observe strict hours and normally close by 1:00 or 2:00 PM or all day before Jewish holidays.  I checked their website for their 2013 Holiday schedule.

They will be open on Thanksgiving from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (which means they are not closing early for Hanukkah) and they will be open regular hours on Black Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM (to close for the weekly Sabbath).  They are always closed Saturday.  Hanukkah isn't even mentioned among the seven Jewish holidays that they observe.  (Also closed on Christmas.)

So Hanukkah is not affecting their schedule at all.  B&H is a gottadeal.com parner store.

A few days ago, I reconnected with my childhood friend who was my next door neighbor and is Jewish. One thing that always stood out was his bragging over how he got a present every night during Hanukkah. I would always counter with, "My mother always gives us ten presents. you only get eight!" Through our recent conversation, he discovered that 4 of my siblings are Jewish, although my mother usually discouraged gift giving during this time due to Christmas being celebrated by all 8 children.

no, the sale won't be any different because of Hanukkah.  Except for in some high Jewish population areas - there will be channukia and candles, oil, and potatoes.  The rest of the US will see no difference in retail.

As  I said in the Thanksgivukkah thread I started in Holiday Discussion awhile ago, deep fried turkey and sweet potato latkes really should be de rigor (sp?) this year...

Hey Pam! Do you remember the year you visited us at Best Buy in Jacksonville???

I did?  I really don't recall that...

My thought was because I need to buy most gifts by Hanukkah I won't be spending much on Black Friday because I will have purchased all our gifts already.

I shop Target clearance year round for birthday and holiday gifts.  Most of my BF spending tends to be on things I want for myself.
