Some Black Friday Toys 'R' Us shoppers double charged

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Some Black Friday shoppers are learning they were charged much more than they bargained for at a local Toys 'R' Us.

NEWS10 has confirmed the store on Wolf Road in Albany charged some customers double for what they bought, though a spokesperson would not say how many.

NEWS10's Marie Luby spoke to one of those customers, who says the mishap has turned into a major inconvenience.

"You think you got a great deal and then you find out the repercussions of it, when you go to the bank to deposit your money, and your bank says you don't have as much money as you thought you did," says Kathleen Cary. Cary had spent $127.59 at Toys 'R' Us, but her credit card was charged twice for the purchase. Turns out it happened to several more customers at the store.

"I knew I was on a tight budget," Cary says. "That's why I got up in the middle of the night and went shopping; with the economy you've got to try and save a penny."

Now on top of the extra $127.59 gone from her account, she has $50 in overdrawn fees. "I can't even go buy a loaf of bread right now, because they shut my account off."

When Cary called Toys 'R' Us she says they told her they were aware of the problem but gave her no explanation why it happened. A spokesperson tells NEWS10, "There is a very big sense of urgency in resolving the matter."

Cary certainly hopes so.

"I had to take all the money out of all my other accounts, my savings account, my vacation club, and put it into my checking account to cover my car insurance because it's coming out Monday morning," she says.

A Toys 'R' Us spokesperson tells NEWS10 they are in the process of reversing the double charging, and they will repay customers who had overdrawn fees.

Funny to see this b/c I called TRU about a phantom $9.99 charge on my account. "Nancy" stated that the first charge is actually a hold on the account. The real charges will be applied to the account later and the hold will disappear. This morning, I checked my account again and the $9.99 charge was still there but the $38.78 charge was changed to the correct amount.

The same thing happened to me. They placed a hold on my card for double the amount. That disappeared a couple days later. Then they cancelled the DSi that I ordered, but still charged me the shipping and tax on my order for it! I called customer service and had to ask to speak to a manager. The first girl tried to tell me she couldn't tell me what i was charged that my order hadn't shipped yet. It had. I tracked in online. The manager/supervisor told me easily what my total was. I hadn't been charged for tax on the DSi, but had been charged for shipping. She waved all the shipping charges on my whole order for the inconvenience. I'm still not shopping at toys r us next year.
