Decorating - Too soon?

My brother and his family are coming to visit us for the first time Thanksgiving week. We have never spent any holidays together and I thought it would be nice to put out the Christmas decorations. Do you think it would be too soon to decorate for Christmas the weekend before?

If I was in your situation, I think what I'd do is: put up as much of the smaller decorations as you're comfortable with the weekend before Thanksgiving (especially special things that you're the most particular about protecting or arranging just so). Keep the main dining table/area in a fall theme.... until after the big meal is done! Then, turn on some holiday tunes, and... have the whole family decorate in grand fashion!! :) Kids can put electric candles in windows, arrange Christmas village displays, or put out placemats, tablecloths, and holiday throw pillows. The men and/or teens can hang any wall decorations that might be more difficult for you to do alone. And the women (and maybe older girls) can work on the floral and/or fragile decor. As for a tree, put up the full-size one if you're up to it (before or while they're there), or put up a smaller tree that you can move to another room later. Young kids would have fun making their own decorations for the tree or to hang on doorknobs!

HTH! The main thing is to enjoy this special time with your family-- so do what you think will be most memorable and special to ALL of you!!

I always decorate about the middle of November. If am Christmas shopping then, I want my house to be festive. This too helps with buying, wrapping and then storing them right under the tree!! Plus we decorate everyroom and use over 10K lights in the yard. So that is too much work for just one month of viewing.

However on my commute in this morning, I did not 2 houses that have already starting decorating outside. They still have all their Halloween stuff in the yard too. I think before Halloween is a bit early. Santa and jack-o-lanterns just don't go well together.

I could see putting up outside decorations now, just not turn the lights on yet. It is probably easier to put decorations up now in the milder weather than it would be in a few weeks when it is colder and possibly snowing.

I agree with the others and see no problem decorating your house for the holidays for your brother's visit. Have fun.

We put up SIX trees.. and decorate the inside and outside of the house.

And no, we do not have a mansion. lol. We have 3 kids, who each have a 3-4 foot tree in their rooms, the live one goes in the living room, one on the porch and one in the dining romo.

We start the day after Thanksgiving and the kids are still into it even tho they are teens.

I love the look of the decorations! Makes me in the Christmas mood

Last year I did mine the weekend before and I was glad I did... I had longer to enjoy the decorations.. more time to spend doing it because my DGD was born Nov 30... so the week of Thanksgiving is busy at work because it's a 3 day week and cooking for Thursday... running on Thursday, shopping on Friday.. birthday party over the weekend.... so it feels nice to get it done slowly and on my time schedule the weekend before... I told hubby that with all our overtime at work I might bring the nutcrackers up from the basement 2 weeks before and then the tree the week before this year....

Plus I like to have them down and packed up before the boys birthdays (Jan 5 and 14) so this way I get to enjoy them plenty long before they have to go back to storage for the rest of the year :)

We dont' get to see either sides of our family for Christmas day either (although we do see them afterward) so if any of them are coming for Thanksgiving I always have the house decorated for Christmas, gives it more of a holiday feel and gets me PUMPED for shopping the next day too LOL

Okay we ALWAYS put our tree up Thanksgiving weekend.....but I really wanna do it now. DH say's absolutely NO!!! I'm home from work this whole week as I've been put out of work w/ the flu. I think I'm on the downside of it, and I get little bursts of energy. Anyhow, I want to use 1 of those bursts to get the tree up.

So, has anyone started putting up Christmas decorations yet?

When I use to live alone I use to put up a tree on Nov 1 (real one) and then take it down and put up a new one Thanksgiving day (real one) because I just dont really like fake trees. But that all changed once DH decided it was a waste of money.

However last night we were strolling around Walmart and he saw some really pretty ornaments and made the comment maybe we should but our tree up sooner. I was all gung ho and thought YES a tree early again! Until he told me it would have to be a faker so we can use it again every year for the early tree. So now im saddened because I really wantt o put up the early tree but my heart hurts a little when I think of putting up a fake tree.

Anyway, I put out my Christmas Village stuff last night. I have a huge round coffee table so I usually cover it with the spiderweb stuff from halloween (since it looks jsut like the snow padding stuff and i usually get it for like 90% off lol) and then set up the village figurines.

I'm ready to do it now, too.

We adopted 2 kittens over the summer, and I want to give them some extra time to get used to it. I'm so afraid they're going to chew through wires and knock the tree down.

But, I've been told to wait at least until Nov 15th. I may just wait until Thanksgiving, though.

I think you should do it! DH would have problems with me doing it inside~ I did clean up our gameroom where he watches his sports--every sport-LOL, all day yesterday. I am trying to ;) get my butt in gear...

Could you "charm" him, use your womanly ways..:D

I would like my hubby to do some outside lights this weekend, we are supposed to have 55-63 temps :) but he may have to work on Saturday, no way I can do it myself with the kids home :( so we will see...
