Illinoismom
answers1. 19302. Mikulasbasement the above is what the cards state below is what I found and the site However, the main celebration of Christmas in Hungary takes place on Christmas Eve. The evening is called Szent-este or Holy Evening. Families attend the mid night mass and sing carols. On December 6th the children receive a visit from Mikulas or St. Nicholas. He wears the robes of a bishop, with a red miter on his head, a staff in one hand and a sack full of small presents in the other. A “devil” accompanies him. Usually, the gift is a small toy or sweets. http://www.edining.ca/331/articles/Christmas__Around__the__World_-_1
queenofshopping
I think the problem with the Hungary question is that, as in many countries, there are actually 2 different times to get gifts, and thus 2 different gift-bringers: St. Nicholas comes on his feast day (Dec. 6th), but according to Wikipedia, presents are also received on Christmas Eve, and are brought by the Angel or Christkind. The duality comes from the time of the Reformation, when traditions thought of as Catholic, namely the association of Saint Nicholas with Christmas, were discouraged.
