This offer is killing me. , I just got E1505 with lower specs compared to this one (40GB 5400rpm HD vs 60GB 7200 rpm, dell vs intel wireless, 53 WHr 6-cell vs 85WHr 9-cell) this monday and pay more. What should I do can I get price match or any adjustment? The only superirority is that mine with 1GB memory vs 512MB. Pls help.

Dell normally charges fees to return merchandise that you have already received and opened. In your case you have not received it and it hasn't been opened. If I were you I would tell the courier that you are REFUSING DELIVERY and to RETURN TO SENDER. There is a good chance Dell will just credit back your account with no fees but I cannot guarantee this. I have done it before and it worked, always YMMV.

I would refuse shipment and return to sender then re-order at this awesome price.

Has Dell offered one in this price range recently? Just curious if this is a deal that will be coming around in the future.

Yes but only ONCE, it was $699 and included a DVD Burner but the weaker battery as well.

There will always be deals down the road but how long do you want to wait? When you really NEED a laptop you may be stuck paying $200 - $300 more then kicking yourself for not pulling the trigger on this deal. Then I will faithfully say, "TOLD YOU SO" because it's my duty.

I know a hot deal when I spot one and this one is scorching

You are my HOT DEAL temptress. I need to stay away from this site. For some reason these deals are burning holes in my pockets. LOL

I still have that Toshiba I bought for Black Friday 2004. It works fine, but I could always hand that down to my mom.

regarding the memory, what's the different between 1GB shared dual channel DDR2 DRAM at 533Mhz, 2 Dimm and 512MB shared single channel DDR2 at 533 MHz, 1 Dimm. especially the different between dual vs single channel and 2 vs 1 Dimm?

do you suggest to call customer service Ross? How to refuse shipment?

So that would be her primary PC? That's actually a very good idea

You were already going to spend $200 - $300 on her PC.

So $699 - $200 = $499 and you get a brand new laptop.

1) Upgrading to 1GB RAM is a good idea, 2 DIMMs is fine.

2) You can call customer service and they might offer a price adjustment against this price but I doubt it. You can also request an RMA number, but they might charge you a restocking fee of 15%.

3) When the UPS/FedEx/DHL courier arrives, tell the driver you are REFUSING SHIPMENT and wish to RETURN TO SENDER.

Yeah, that would be her primary PC. She just tools around on the internet so it would be more than adequate.

I put the upgrades you recommended on it so it is $800 plus tax. Still a hot deal. Argh!

I called Dell twice.

1st CR was really not helpfull at all, basically she said that I can refuse the shipment but I will get to pay the shipping. And they can't offer me any price adjustment. And she disconnected me.

2nd call went much better. He suggested me to cancel the order and reorder the new one with better deal. But then he found out that the laptop was already shipped so he offered me $70 credit to my credit card for my laptop. I took it, I'm happy now.

Thank you Ross...

Then I would definitely buy this since you're killing two birds with one stone. Would she get more use out of a laptop or desktop? Not to mention it would be easier to move around, has built in 56k modem and Ethernet NIC, does it have WiFi?

I would re-consider the last two upgrades and maybe opt for the DVD Burner instead:

Quote:
15.4 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen SXGA+ Display with TrueLife™ [add $71 or $2/month2]
If you're satisfied with your laptops current display then you probably don't need this upgrade. However I'm picky and usually prefer a higher resolution. This is actually a good deal, I think it's usually $150 more?

Dell Photo All-in-One Printer 810 [add $19]
Very basic printer, I would only buy this if you plan on giving it to your mother or as a gift.

I don't have time to see a difference between the displays. You wouldn't steer me wrong. I don't need the DVD burner on the laptop. I have one in my desktop and I rarely use it, so I can use that money somewhere else.

What is the difference in the displays??

As fas as my current laptop goes, it has a modem and a NIC. It didn't have wireless built into it, but I bought a PCMCIA card. I don't think she needs a desktop. She doesn't need the power of a desktop, she won't be adding on new hardware, etc. The other advantage of the desktop is that it is usually cheaper, but since I'd be giving it to her, that's not an issue either. My brother would be using this too.

Can you tell I'm trying to rationalize this?? You are making it hard for me NOT to buy.

I live in CA, so it's tax time + Environmental Fees. With WinXP Pro, upgraded video card, the standard screen, and the rest of Rossman's "recommended updates", It's $1,060.76 out-the-door. I wonder if it's still a good deal?

Why do you need XP Pro and the upgraded video card, how do you plan on using the laptop?

It's still quite a bit cheaper then what you pay otherwise.

WXGA is 1280x800 (boooo!)
WSXGA+ is 1680x1050.

I like the 1400x1050 on my old Inspiron 8100. Personally I'd prefer the 1600x1200 my mom had on her 8200 over 1680x1050. Widecreen does nothing for me.

Ummm... huh? The warranty plans are pretty straight-forward. You probably won't need the Dell on Call, there's people here who could help you if you have trouble setting it up. The accidental damage might be a good idea if you're prone to breaking stuff, but it's a little expensive. So that leaves the hardware warranty - consider how long you're going to need this thing to continue to work. Laptops can be pretty expensive to fix. But on the other hand, my 4 year old Dell has never given me any problems except my hard drive just recently died.

Also for those considering this, you can get a Dell coupon on eBay to make it a little cheaper. I just verified that the $25 off $150 coupons available do indeed stack, making this $674. Those coupons can be had for around $10 on eBay , so it's well worth it to pick one up.
