Ok in a thread someone said to make sure you use a credit card that extends your warranty offered by the mfg. Which credit cards are these?

I know Visa does, I think Amex does, Mastercard probably does. Ross'll see this thread pretty soon and I'm sure he'll have links.

also check to see if your credit card will offer extra insurance on rental cars - a great savings so you don't buy the insurance from the rental car company.

From my Amex:
"Buyer's Assurance With the Buyer's Assurance Plan, you can shop worry-free knowing that the terms of the original manufacturer's warranty will be matched up to one additional year, on warranties of five years or less that are eligible in the U.S." One thing to watch with the Credit Card Car Rental Insurance is that usually even if your Credit Card offers the coverage it does so as a Seconday Insurance provider (Amex is this way - At least the Amex Golf Card I have). This means that it will still fall on to your personal car insurance first and the CC company will only cover any difference that your personal car insurance does not cover. It will not protect you from having to file a claim with your personal insurance company and thus them raising your personal rates. Last edited by keleko74; 12-30-2005 at 5:43 PM. |

I believe nearly all Gold and Platinum Visa and Mastercard issuers offer a form of extended warranty. Don't know about AmEx.
Make sure you read the terms and conditions carefully because there are usually a couple of "gotchas". You have to have the receipt showing you bought the item on an eligible card, you have to have a copy of the manufacturer's warranty, and your CC account has to be in good standing. Cancelling the card would end your extended warranty rights. There are exceptions for motorized items and some others, they have the right to either repair or replace with a comparable item, and a couple other little details.

Bumping this thread because i'm looking for a new card. I just checked with my three credit cards (2 MBNA, 1 Citi) and none of them extend warranties.
So i'm going to get a 4th card. I'm buying a new laptop and i really want that free 2nd year warranty. I would get AMEX Blue, but the laptop seller doesn't take AMEX. Can anyone suggest a specific card that they like that does extend warranties? |

Are any of your three cards Gold or Platinum Visa or MC?

This page clearly says your Citi Platinum Select card offers MasterCard Extended Warranty protection. But please make sure you have all the fine print to ensure a laptop won't be exempt from coverage.
I believe your MBNA card would have similar protection, but you'd need to check with MBNA. You should call both issuers and ask for the full details to make sure your purchase is covered in the way you expect.

Thanks for the link. Perhaps the CSR i talked to just gave me incorrect info. I will call back and reference that page.
EDIT: the CSR i talked to today confirmed that my card does have that protection. Thanks again, Kranky! Last edited by WashWest; 6-23-2006 at 4:52 PM. |

How does this work? If your product dies you send it to the CC company?
