My son is wanting a gas scooter. The one that looks like a moped sort of. He is 14 and wants to take it to his part time job. It is about 2 miles down the rd. We live in a small town and he has a back rd he can ride it on. Now he rides his bike. I don't want something that goes 50 or 60 miles an hour. Any ideas? He is trying to save about 700.00. That will be the most he can pay.

A Honda Metropolitan, Honda Ruckus, Yamaha Vino Classic, or any number of other 50cc scooters will top out at about 42mph, in most states they require a class C license (automotive-class license). Larger engines typically require motorcycle licenses (Class M).
They sell "scooters" at Pep Boys, but they are the worst things ever made from what I've read. They might work for a week, maybe two, but no real mechanic will work on them and Pep Boys refuses to take returns on them -- avoid them like the plague. There really aren't any true mopeds being produced anymore (mopeds have working pedals and can be pedaled without use of the motor)... Things along the lines of the Honda PA50 were discontinued in the early 80's: ![]() His best bet might be to find an electric powered bicycle. Check with a local bike shop... If he can find an old Honda Express, they run around $350, but they'll need some work. Here's one near me: http://www.scottpowersports.com/pre_...9R0&veh=659315 But check with your local state web site -- some get very picky about scooters and licensing. He may be forced to go with an electric bicycle since he is too young for a automobile license.
