hi, sorry if this has been asked before but the search function is not working for me right now...
Anyway, my 19 year old DD (college sophomore) spilled soup all over her very nice, less than a year old, Samsung Propel. The phone is dead. We are not currently eligible for an upgrade and I have read here and there on the internet that you can purchase an ATT Go Phone and just put a contract SIM Card in it and it will work the same as if you had purchased one of the uber expensive phones from the store. Has anyone had any luck with this? I can get an LG Neon Go Phone on the ATT Site for about $119 which is a lot cheaper than a new Propel. I don't want to spend a lot bc she is obviously not very careful with it but also she needs a good phone bc she often drives herself back and forth the 4.5 hours to and from school. TIA

Yes, an ATT prepaid phone, or just about any other unlocked GSM phone should work.
I would reccommend taking the battery out of the Propel and letting it dry out thoroughly for a few days and then try again. It may work when it drys completely. Until then, she can pick up a cheap $30 prepaid from Wal-mart or some other store and use it to at least have phone service. Here are some AT&T phones from Wal-mart . The cheapest is only $30, you can get a nice QWERTY phone for < $100 The Neon is only $92, and you can have it shipped site to store for free: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=12555417 You can probably even find better prices than that. |

Thanks Scott. She has tried just about everything, even took it to the ATT store for them to look at. She wants to try out her old Razr (which was so battered they would not even take it on trade) first. She did say she took the SIM Card out of the Propel first thing as I was worried it would be ruined as well. She is coming home this weekend so we will have to sort it out then I guess.

Some times there are local shops that repair phones. You may investigate that route as well.

If the sim card is dirty from the soup, you can clean it using qtips and alcohol (I think it is alcohol). Any phone that has been on ATT or sold as an ATT phone (prepaid or otherwise) will work with her sim. She can also look at unlocked phones as mentioned previously. Sometimes, she can even get a Tmobile phone and get it "unlocked" and it will work with her sim.
