View Full Version : How much do you spend on groceries a month?
LoveNcMountains 11-11-2007, 1:20 PM Family of 5- husband, me, DS17, DS13 and DS8, PLUS 4 cats...
My husband keeps track on the computer, that is the only reason I know the figure but I have been spending about $1200 amonth of groceries, and that is down from the $1800 a month when I didn't buy based on coupons and specials. This figure includes kitty food/litter, and cleaners that are typically purchased at the grocery store. I have told him to now give me $300 bi monthly and make it CASH to FORCE me to stay within my budget. I have so much in the way of groceries and cleaners that this will do me good. We haven't really been ones for sticking to a budget. We have always just spent using a credit card, so far this year we have spent about $20,000 more than he has made. We are running out of interest free ways of deferring our debt.
Rough time of year to do this with 3 kids and Xmas coming but I guess we will need to sell stuff on Craigs list and Ebay to get xmas presents.
What do other spend a month on groceries? I know my number is probably shocking to some people. I didn't realise until yesterday how much we were spending on groceries.
jbrawn26 11-11-2007, 1:39 PM we also have a family of 5 and I spend 350-400 biweekly plus the 2 boys take 40 biweekly between them for school lunches. This includes laundry soap, cat litter, toilet paper etc. The way I manage to do it for this amount is I make a biweekly dinner menu get our my recipes and buy what I need to make those. I also buy the malt o meal bagged cereal and put it in see through containers so the kids don't know the difference. We go through about 6 bags of cereal. I do end up picking up a few things such as milk or a missed ingredient throughout the week but generally not more than another 50 for that. My husband comes home for lunch as well and usually I do grilled cheese and tomato soup, or sandwich meat with cheese or just leftovers from the night before for lunch for him and the baby. I don't usually eat lunch just my coffee lol.
nick_jenni_jocelyn 11-11-2007, 2:03 PM we have a family of 4, one of which is still on bottles but still eats what we do most of the time. we spend about 150-200 a month on groceries... maybe closer to the 200 mark. i buy a lot of meats in bulk from sams so that cuts down on the monthly bill quite a bit. i usually dont have to buy meats for a couple of months and i try to have a couple of meatless meals a week. but since my DS is drinking whole milk, its killing us. milk is $4 a gallon. i am not sure which costs more... him on milk or formula, lol.
4 of us. the kids are not teenagers yet (I know that will make a big difference) and I budget 175 every 2 weeks, so 350/month. Some of that goes for cat food - but we buy litter at wally world, usually.
Plus, the kids each get 20/month for school lunch - but that is not groceries :)
hinman 11-11-2007, 2:37 PM I have a family of 5 one is a teenager. We easily spend about 600.00 a month. Not included the 20 dollars a week for school lunches. I try to stay away from junk food. It helps.
shanni 11-11-2007, 2:46 PM There are 4 of us, one being a male teenager, we spend about 400-500 a month. That's with using coupons.
jbrawn26 11-11-2007, 3:22 PM wow! could some of you send me a list of what you eat lol I usually make a meat, starch, and veggie each night for dinner and seems to be costing me more =/ My kids are 11, 6, and 19 mos. Although I do have to say whole milk is a big cost it's nearly 5 bucks a gallon here
erh12275 11-11-2007, 3:26 PM wow! could some of you send me a list of what you eat lol I usually make a meat, starch, and veggie each night for dinner and seems to be costing me more =/ My kids are 11, 6, and 19 mos. Although I do have to say whole milk is a big cost it's nearly 5 bucks a gallon here
ALmost $5 here too and my kids drink about 2 gallons a week. And I remember complaining about getting 2/$5.
erh12275 11-11-2007, 3:27 PM There are 5 of us. Kids are 7,5,and 3. We spend about $400 a month on food and another $200 on toiletries etc.
hinman 11-11-2007, 3:30 PM Milk here is $3. I got through about 2 gallons a week at least. Probably 3.
bayhaysay 11-11-2007, 3:36 PM There are 5 people and 1 dog (who thinks he's a person) living here and we spend around $100/week on groceries and probably another $25-$50/week on household supplies/toiletries (the amount varies depending on what we need each week). So, I guess we're out $500-$600/month on groceries and supplies.
I couldn't imagine spending $1200 on that stuff in a month.
wow! could some of you send me a list of what you eat lol I usually make a meat, starch, and veggie each night for dinner and seems to be costing me more =/ My kids are 11, 6, and 19 mos. Although I do have to say whole milk is a big cost it's nearly 5 bucks a gallon here
we don't have meat every night... maybe 4 or 5 per week. We hit costco once a month or so... fill up on meat there, and when on sale at the grocery store, and stick it in the freezer.
Kids love pasta, rice and potatoes, so starch is easy.
Veggies is often carrot sticks, or mixed in with the rice, or frozen...
annfmeyer 11-11-2007, 6:19 PM There are 4 of us...15year old dd and 13 year old ds, 4 cats, a dog, and a mawcaw. We spend about $600.00 in total with people food, pet food(and supplies), cleaners, toiletries,TP, etc.
We used to spend about $1200.00 when I didn't pay attention too much to sales and did no couponing.
We relocated and I chose not to work, but was compelled to contribute to the household income in some way....mostly out of guilt for not working;)
Anyway I have become a coupon, sale , rebate master. I actually REALLY enjoy it...I found out so quickly how much money can be saved by paying attention.
Aside from the vast internet blogging sites(so VERY helpful) , and learning what stores allow coupon stacking, doubling, and things like that. I have a Saturday ritual. I get the Sunday papers in the afternoon on Sat. I look at all the ads, then through the mf coupons. Go back and compare the items I plan on buying that week store to store for the best price, and plan my shopping for the week.
It may seem like a bunch of work to those new to the game, but it really isn't a big deal once you get the hang of it.
I take advantage of programs that stores offer like CVS and Walgreens. So Often I already have "free" money toward my purchaces.
I love Target for stacking coupons.
We prepare about 80% of our meals...meat,veggie,starch.
It is amazing how much you can save with planning and awareness.
for example, Aldi had uncooked ham on sale last week for $1.19/lb (great price):)
I baked it last Sunday for dinner, then made split pea soup a couple days later, and used the rest for sandwiches.
I also bought 2 more to freeze(I also suggest even a small chest freezer) It's great to take advantage of such sales and stock up. Then you have the meal(s) ready with little or no shopping.
I really didn't mean to go on so long....Hope this was helpful:) I was once where you are...I totally understand.;)
LoveNcMountains 11-12-2007, 9:06 AM I did get a small chest freezer last weeked. I already have it full (we had triple coupons this week) and I did get 2 turkeys one was $.29 a pound, which was part of the reason we got the freezer.
I think my husband may have been including some target trips in the grocery catagory in past months because I know groceries cost a little bit more here but after reading what everyone else was doing mine can't be that high. I did have one month (according to his records) where it was less than $1000.
Since the first of August I have been trying to only buy when it is on sale and I have a coupon, so it really should have gone down considerally from months prior to that.
I only buy cereal when it is on sale and I have a coupon, and meat only when it is on sale.
Well atleast knowing what everyone else spends per month helps me realize that this is definately an obtainable goal I have set for myself.
fairydustcrissy 11-12-2007, 12:53 PM There are 5 of us, I have 3 kids ages 8, 6, and 3. I spend about $175-200 a month on groceries. I cannot imagine spending $1200! We would starve! lol.
samisma 11-12-2007, 1:00 PM 4 of us in my house. Now that I'm getting the hang of coupons and we no longer use baby formula I probably spend about $300 month. Most of the expense is in milk (DD goes through half gallon/day!). I've learned that if I write letters to a lot of the manufacturers (positive or negative) that they'll send more coupons. Positive letters tend to result in more coupons too! Beechnut is the best about this...
libby82 11-12-2007, 1:10 PM any ideas on frugal shopping when you have kids with food allergies-dd10 has celiac disease-thus a lot of my shopping is done at whole foods its hard to find a bargain there
pottsie66 11-12-2007, 2:16 PM Family of 11 - we spend anywhere from $1500 - $2000 a month on groceries and toiletries. I think our biggest expenses are milk, paper items, and laundry detergent. We go through at least a gallon a day and with it costing $4 a gallon, it adds up fast. Ummm . . . the toilet paper gets very costly, too!!! Six of the kids are under the age of 8 and they think they have to use half a roll of tp to wipe - it drives me nuts
with a family of 11, that is not bad! Try Costcos or the like for milk. at 1 to 2 off grocery store prices, it'll pay for your membership in no time.
Libby, hard with a restricted diet to get too many deals, you are right. Shaws/Stop-n-shop line are carrying a better selection .
calls/letters (of praise) to the manufacturer often reap coupons.
Flutterbye 11-12-2007, 5:58 PM Sadly to say for our little family of 2 people and 3 cats we spend about 450-500 a month. This includes all pet items, groceries, and household stuff ( laundry soap, paper products, cleaning supplies). I think I need to learn too use coupons.
fairydustcrissy 11-12-2007, 6:49 PM Whole foods occasionally has coupons, and there is a Mambo Sprouts book that comes out occasionally. I want to say its quarterly, but not 100% on that. Usually Whole Foods has the Mambo Sprouts book with thier ad.
myervin2001 11-12-2007, 9:17 PM I dont know if anyone else has tried this or not but I agree milk prices have gotten outrageous. My mom told me that when we were kids she would split a gallon of milk by using powdered milk. I tried this to see if my kids would notice I filled an empty gallon jug with 1/2 powdered milk and poured 1/2 of the whole milk in it shook it up good and did the same with the other gallon jug. So far so good no one has noticed I have done this the kids are still drinking just as much milk. A secret is I did it when they were asleep so they didnt see me do it. This is a good way to save money if your kids will fall for it like mine did. :)
We also shop at Costco for meat once a month we can usually spend about $100 and get enough meat to last just about a month when we do 1-2 meals a week meatless like breakfast, pancakes, veggie plates etc... At Costco the boneless pork chops are so thick you can cut them in half and double the package count. I have a freezer thats bigger than my fridge so I stock up every chance I get.
I wish they would triple coupons here.
Btw I have a family of 5
preacherswife2 11-12-2007, 10:14 PM Family of 2 here with a ton of company..DH is a pastor. Our budget is $250.00 and in the past 6 months I have not gone over $130.00. I am blessed to have a place that triples to .50 near by and had tons of fruit and veggies given to us over the summer which I put in the frezzer or canned (gotta say canning is not much fun!) We also do two nights a week with no meats and do leftovers for lunch on most days. For cleaning I really stick to mostly homemade items, like vinger for window, make my own bleach wipes, etc. Need to find some why to get the price of TP down anyone have ideas? I make most of our breads and buy very little ready to eat food. I also found that I only go to the store one every two weeks, not sure why but it does save me money. Read somewhere that store run most sales two weeks, and not going back saves money. It works for me..or has so far. I will break the rules when something really good runs that off week;)
love a deal 11-13-2007, 2:57 PM Family of 5 here. We spend around $700.00/month on groceries. Some months we might spend less. Seems like we grill out alot in the summer and that is more expensive.
sm1kla 11-13-2007, 7:13 PM We spend about $800/ month. But we typically go to walmrt and pick up non-grocery items too.
richeileen 11-13-2007, 9:35 PM wE ARE ON A BUDGET...I USED TO SPEND MORE AROUND 600.00-800.00 ON EVERYTHING BUT MY HUSBAND BUYS HALF A COW AND THAT LASTS ABOUT 6 MONTHS AND HE NOW HAS OUT BILL DOWN TO ABOUT 300.OO FOR 1 BIRD, 2 DOGS, FISH, AND 6 OF US! MILK HERE IS 5.00 A GALLON SOMETIMES MORE. I GREW UP ON POWDERED MILK, I DONT KNOW IF I COULD DO IT AGAIN.
LoveNcMountains 11-13-2007, 9:49 PM I Used powdered milk in my homeade mac n cheese the other day....I could taste it. It had been a while since I had made the mac n cheese so I don't knw if my husband and son couldn't tell the different taste, but I COULD.... Maybe had I done half real and half powdered that might have made a difference.
We go throught 2-3 gallons a week depending on how many times I make cookies....If I buy Quik or Hershey's then my husband will drink a half gallon+ a day. I try not to buy it.
Milk is $3.69 a gallon here for store brand (atleast for now though gas is $3.09 a gallon so I expect it will be going up)....Where the heck is it that people live that is $5.00 a gallon? My kids do NOT drink milk so if I had to cut back it wouldn't be that big a deal.
jlr1260 11-13-2007, 10:34 PM I have a family of four with two cats. My grocery bill is anywhere between $500 & $600 a month. I'm trying to get it lower but it's very hard. I'm learning to price match at Walmart. Tonight I went in the store with three different flyers. I got my milk for $2.99 a gallon, cat food 4 cans for $1.00. I got a Christmas gift for the same price advertised at Target. I bought milk two days ago at the store that's running the $2.99 sale. I picked up 4 gallons, then 2 more at Walmart tonight. Those of you who say you go through 2 gallons of week have it good. I buy four on my regular grocery day, then end up picking up two more before the week is over. Milk is a big expense in my house. Luckily I've been able to get it for less than $4.00 a gallon up to this point. I also try to stock up on meats and anything else on sale. This week my local market has boneless chicken breasts for $1.69 a pound. I think I have to buy a 10 pound package but it's worth the extra work of trimming and freezing it. It'll give me two chicken meals a week for about 5 weeks.
I actually don't shop with a lot of coupons because I get about half my groceries at Walmart Super Center. I buy a lot of generic brand.
milk at the grocery store was ON SALE for 3.79. Store brand was 3.99. local (usually competitive with store brand) was 2/$10!
Stopped at the gas station. got milk for 3.15/gallon
annfmeyer 11-15-2007, 12:39 PM Powred milk Yuck!!!. I grew up inthe 70's and we actually had the pull out 50lb powered milk bin. We also had the "milk man" deliver 3 gallons of milk 2 times a week. We cut that milk with the powered.SOOOOOOOOOOOOOo gross. I just can't do that....I like to save a buck, but sometimes there is a limit....Too many child hood memories I've already paid for therapy to fix. LOL
UofIgirl2000 11-15-2007, 2:05 PM Just two of us and the cat, but about $250 a month on a pretty healthy diet. I go twice a month for groceries, where the original total can be anywhere from $150 to $200, but using coupons and shopping the sales, I'll get that down to $70-$80. When you factor in the odds and ends that creep up and the food purchased at Target (great prices on organics and canned goods at Target!), then the total bill for the month is probably around $250. We eat lots of produce, not a lot of meat - no red meat. We try to do organics, lots of fish & seafood, chicken, fresh and frozen produce, low-sodium, low-fat, high-fiber. Not a lot of processed foods, unless they meet my qualifications (certain number of calories, no high-fructose corn syrup, no artificial sweeteners, etc). Kitty eats organically too.
It was a struggle at first, but finally figuring out what I can buy, and how to clip coupons for this and stock up on the real deals. My mantra is that money spent on junk food is money that did not have to be spent. My definition of junk food has expanded considerably (white pasta, for example). Not always an easy transition.
Another little thing: Target usually has milk AT COST. Our Kroger just had milk on sale for $1.25 a half gallon, so $2.50/gallon.
jbrawn26 11-15-2007, 6:57 PM I Used powdered milk in my homeade mac n cheese the other day....I could taste it. It had been a while since I had made the mac n cheese so I don't knw if my husband and son couldn't tell the different taste, but I COULD.... I'm in Maine
kieransmummy 11-15-2007, 8:50 PM There are 6 of us, we spend about $700 a month.
monster2369 11-16-2007, 8:59 AM It is 5 of us plus one dog, 6 fish, and a rabbitt. I try to spend about $300 a month in groceries. My father sends us toliet tissue once a month so I do not have to buy that plus with one bathroom we really do not go through tissue that much. The milk is the biggest thing in my house too, we usually get by with atleast 2 gallons a week. Sometimes Circle K around my house will sell 2 gallons for $5! I stock up. I would say the deep freezer is the best investment!
392ridenour 11-19-2007, 1:46 AM Thanks to "Angel Food" and coupons and sales, I can say that I feed my family of 4 ( with one teen & an 8 yr boy) on a budget of $500per month. This is with meat in every meal. And my two kids drink 3-4 gallons of milk each week at 4.50 pg!!
jax81772 11-19-2007, 7:57 PM LOL.. I was just going to ask if anyone knew about Angel food. Also, any of the families with children under the age of 5 do you get WIC? The guidelines for WIC are not the same as food stamps, you dont even go to the same place to get it. Go to your local/county health dept. a family of 6 can make up to $42,000, I think and still quailfy. If your kids quailfy for reduced lunches at school, you should qualify for this. It is a fedral program... and it gives you MILK!!! Also, cheese, peanut butter, ceral, eggs, and juice. I know some feel like it can be welfare, but... like my mom said... I have paid taxes for years... so... if you quaify for it... go get it. We did this when my ds4 was first born, he was allergic to every kind of formula, and they paid for the $28 a can formula for him. It was a huge relief for us. With only one working... its an option... that can help stretch a strained budget, esp with small ones at home.
jax81772 11-19-2007, 7:58 PM Also, Aldi... I love my Aldi's...
diznut 11-20-2007, 11:20 PM I found a coupon site this past spring through a google search and reduced my grocery bill by 3/4! I now spend less than $200 A MONTH and I have such a stockpile of health and beauty aids and other things like rice, peanut butter, pizzas, frozen vegetables etc etc. I have a household of four (oh yes and one golden retriever), two are teenagers. All brand name stuff (we like Pantene and Vive Pro, bounty, tide etc). It is absolutely amazing when you learn how to coupon correctly to make the most of your dollar. PM me for the name of the website if anyone is interested....
harrispizza4 11-20-2007, 11:42 PM Wic is a nice program but the children have to be under 5:( Our family of five plus one dog spends about $500 a month. I don't use any coupons cuz I feel like I never really save that much for the time I spend looking for them. :)
fairydustcrissy 11-23-2007, 4:59 PM LOL.. I was just going to ask if anyone knew about Angel food. Also, any of the families with children under the age of 5 do you get WIC? I do get WIC. So that is one gallon of milk a week that I dont have to buy :)

When my husband was working we had a different budget than now he's unemployed.
For a family of 4 with 2 boys 12 and 15, we budgeted $200 a month grocery, $25 a month non-food (like tp, paper towels, soap, etc etc)
Then the last week of August dh lost his job. After depleting our savings we applied and got food stamps. What we receive now is $245 a month for groceries!
So it's like I got a raise LOL. :o

We do garden, and we have goats for milk and chickens for eggs and meat. I also sell eggs, cheese, and excess livestock and make sure the cash goes right back into animal feed so the animals are always paying for themselves. :yup: I'm glad I only have to buy milk a few weeks out of the year. I have a dairy intolerant son and SoySilk gets expensive for him.
dible1343 11-24-2007, 1:18 PM i catch myself buying things with coupons that i would normally not purchase...does anyone else do this?..with christamas coming... its racking me, and i am up for trying coupon shopping again!!...anyone have any good coupon sites?...
lisamag 12-30-2007, 8:43 PM Family of 11 - we spend anywhere from $1500 - $2000 a month on groceries and toiletries. I think our biggest expenses are milk, paper items, and laundry detergent. i used to do the same thing with the tp. but i invested in paper towels now and they clean up a lot more and i use less. i buy the bounty usually the 15 rolls for 8.99 (with -$1.00 coupon) and i get the 20 rolls of scott for $10 (with-$1.00) i found it's better to buy those things big to save money.

my monthly groceries and non foods go for about $500. me, ds14,dd6, snacks and foods for my mom in a nursing home,7 cats and 1 dog. and 7 plus strays and wild birds. i hoping to bring that $500 down buy stopping my quick stops to the corner deli stores, man they nickel and dime me to death. if i'm not careful i can easily drop $10 or $15 each time.
how much do you spend on your pet needs? i buy 4 25lbs bags of hartz cat litter (4.49 a bag total $17.96) and i get 4 18lbs of dry cat food (dog won't eat dog food) at the most $12.99 a bag i've gotten it for as little as $7 on sale and coupons. i find that buying the bigger bags really hepls me to save. bird seeds are getting way to much once spring comes they can find bugs to eat lol.
staviles 12-30-2007, 10:36 PM Family of seven here, DH and I, DS 16 & 14, DD 12 & 10 and DS 7, plus 3 dogs, 2 cats, one bird, one guinea pig and five fish and we go through about $1,000 a month in both groceries and toiletries. Have found that if I stock up on meat when it is on sale (have deep freezer) and toiletries when on sale and have coupons (have 45 bottles of shampoo and conditioner in pantry) those things save $ for the weekly sodas, milk, bread and eggs. BTW eggs here in STL cost $4.19 for a large dozen?? We are thinking of buying some chickens..lol.

Ya know I just realized how much were spending on tp too, everytime I turn around were out!! There's 5 of us usually but right now we have 4 extra people living w/us until they get moved into their new house........I'm afraid to see how much I spend @<hidden> the grocery next time!! Usually it's about $150 a week but that's no meat & it cost $99 a month for school lunches for 3 kids.

We spend $1,000 to $1,100 a month. Biggest expenses are milk, coffee and lunchmeat.
LoveNcMountains 1-2-2008, 2:27 PM how much do you spend on your pet needs? i buy 4 25lbs bags of hartz cat litter (4.49 a bag total $17.96) and i get 4 18lbs of dry cat food (dog won't eat dog food) at the most $12.99 a bag i've gotten it for as little as $7 on sale and coupons. i find that buying the bigger bags really hepls me to save. bird seeds are getting way to much once spring comes they can find bugs to eat lol.
I am not sure how much I spend on the cats...the cats eat Iams dry food. I had read (on here) about the Iams cat food at Dollar General for $2.75 so I went to Ebay and got 70 coupons for $3.00 off ANY size bag, then spent the next couple of weeks raiding the Dollar Generals in a 40 mile radius (there are qutie a few but the most anyone store would have is 12 if I was lucky), that was this past August, I still have atleast 40 bags left. BUt I did just buy some today because of the Target Clipless coupon, it was on sale and I had a manufacturer coupon too.
The Kitty Litter I buy when it is B1G1f which is every few weeks and I use coupons when I do. I Pay anywhere from $6-$8 and don't stick to one brand. I buy either Scoop away, Tidy Cat or Arm & Hammer (depends on the coupons). 2 of the 4 cats also like the wet food I had aquired 70 b1G1F coupons for Sheba cat food which is almost a buck a can! I did just find it on sale for $.84 the other day but only had 7 coupons....
Treats, I just got 6 bags for free yesterday and I seem to always have B1G1F coupons for those too...I seem to have several bags of treats but only 2 cats get the treats.
I have been managing to stick to my $600 a month for groceries...I could probalby do better too...Soon my goal will have to be $500 a month. Tomorrow is Triple Coupons at Harris Teeter, so it probably won't be month.

Thanks for the info. on this. I will have to check out my store. I never usually go there but I will have to check this out. I usually don't have to buy cat food either because of coupons but recently I had to buy a few bags and it killed me to actually have to pay for it, lol.
