Do they ever have DSLR cameras on sale on BF?

Some stores should. Not too many, though, as they're not quite as popular to common consumers but more towards the pros. For example: Last year a few stores had the Canon XTi Digital SLR for about $900.

The stores that usually have 'em on BF are Best Buy, CompUSA, and Circuit City. Maybe some others but those are the biggies.

Those $900 ones previously discussed above are more towards the professionals and certainly not for the typical consumer.

A good one would be any 7MP basic digital camera. People seem to lean towards HP or Kodak for ease of use. They'll be a big seller on BF, probably around $100 or so. The 8-9MP cameras are coming out nowdays and those are currently going for about $150-200 a pop. I gotta feeling it's gonna be a sweet BF for camera buffs. :D

You can get "SLR like" cameras, which have alot of the same capabilities as the higher priced digital SLRs, for the point & shoot price.

The Canon Powershot S5 IS has alot of power for a point and shoot, and is half the price ($400-$450 ish) of the Canon Rebels. At the same time, there are extra lenses and flashes that can be purchased to up the quality and power. The S5 is 8mp, 12x optical zoom, with image stabilization and face detection features, as well as in-camera-photo editing options.

If you're still deterred by the $450 price tag, look into the Powershot S3 IS. It's a slightly older model, 6mp, 12x optical zoom but still high power and SLR like, with the option for lenses. Megapixel isn't everything, after all. 6mp will print 11"x16" images without a problem. You can order one of these from walmart's website right now for $302.54 with free site-to-store shipping.

Flickr has a feature now that allows you to explore photos based on what type of camera took them. I find this is a fantastic way to see both amateur and professional quality photographs that have been taken with the camera I'm curious about.

The reason she want an easy share is that is the kind I have and she likes mine. Plus she wont buy batteries and Im not either, lol.

Keep in mind battery cost, look for a rechargable battery camera.

THe Kodak v803 is a nice camera, I have it and like it. (2nd kodak, the first works great, just wanted a purple camera to be different.). ANd you don't have to use the dock to charge it, it has an ac adaptor, so I can keep both charged. My first camera was a silver one but I went to skinit.com and got a pink skin for it so it's pink and silver now.

I am in the market for a entry level digital SLR myself and am hoping to find one this BF. I'm hoping to get a deal on the Nikon D40, D40x or th Canon Digital Rebel XT or Xti, we'll see. There's a Sony SLR that's pretty nice too. Has anyone heard of any deals involving SLR's this year? I'm hoping for under $400!

I'd love a SLR, but Not too sure if I can afford all the lenses I'd want for it.
I like to take pics of my boys playing sports and lots of scenic shots.
But also some upclose macro shots too.. so I need something better than what I
have. I have a dig camera that is low in MP's but takes great action shots.
Macro on it sucks though. :(

Optical zoom gives you better quality - It is more like traditional zoom on a film camera.

If you've ever seen digital photos that are grainy, usually it is taken when you are zoomed all the way in. Most cameras nowadays use their "optical" zoom and then if you zoom further, it makes up for it in "digital" zoom.

I have a really great SLR "like" camera - Fuji Finepix, but want a nice little point and shoot - I think I may take more pictures if I can carry it with me constantly. The Fuji is just bigger and bulkier because it has the nose like a SLR would with the lenses... I think I'm going to stick with either a Fuji again or an Olympus because I've had great luck with the Fuji and my parents have had 2 olympus cameras and loved them both!

Two features I want in a camera are rechargeable battery and anti shake. I found one at a great price this summer for the anti shake. I kept it until I got it home and found that it wasn't rechargeble. (I didn't even think they made battery based ones at that level.)

I am trying to learn my camera this week so I know if I need a new one or not. My sons and nephews love when I decide to need a new one. They get the old one.(Only a few months old.)

Well, back after a year!!

I'm looking for a camera this year, too, although I'd rather get it earlier than BF. I need one with good zoom (to get DD on stage dancing) and the ability to take those pics without a flash!! My dad's old 35 mm does this, but it's 2007 -- you'd think one of the other Digitals would do this.

DH broke my Nikon coolpix that was 3 yrs old. That's okay though, my CELL PHONE takes better pics than that old thing! Anyways, thinking on the Nikon D40 or something similar.

Can't wait til the ads! :D

Saw the Sears BF ad has the Nikon D40 for $459.99 and the Rebel XT on sale for $599.99, both with same type of lense.
Does anyone on here have either camera to give some info on either?
And ease of use?

The price for dSLRs are tightly controlled by the manufacture. The retail store does not have a lot of margin for sale prices. That why prices are very consistant from store to store. The only thing that changes is the "bundled" options, such as case, extra battery, and filter, which you may or may not want.

Look for coupons for "%x off anything in the store". These are really valuable on (nearly) fix prices items such as dSLR.

A better option would be to buy the dSLR on-line from a NYC dealer, but make sure item are not "grey market" (without USA warrenty) and the dealer is reputable. If the price is too good to be true...it usually is.

The Nikon D40 is regularly $549.99 at Sear, on sale at Early Bird special for $449.99.

At B&H, the regular on-line price if $489.99.

If you really want the Nikon D40, you can save about $40.00 at the Early Bird sale at Sears, not the $100 saving that the Sears ad states.

However, I think it is more important to get the best camera for your needs, rather thay the one with the 10% discount.

The best prices for DSLR's are online from the large stores in new york (B&H Photo, Adorama, etc.) As stated above, the retail stores (Walmart, Best Buy, Sears, etc) do not have a lot of room to reduce the price. The price reductions come from wholesalers and manufacture discounts.

I cannot post links since I am new, but B&H Photo (search in Yahoo or Google) has a Canon Digital Rebel Xt for $510. You can get it for less ($429) without the lens.Typically you can find lenses for relatively cheap on Ebay.

Perhaps the most important part of the camera is the lens, particularly for sports and low light pictures. Canon (or Nikon) typically make good consumer quality lenses, but they can get pretty pricey. You may want to look at Sigma, Tamron or Tokina for lenses. They make them to fit pretty much every brand of DSLR camera and most of the time are much cheaper than the manufacturer's lenses.

Now, for consumer cameras (Point and Shoot).... Keep in mind that mega pixels are not all that important, unless you plan to make large poster prints (11x14, 20x30 and larger). You can make excellent 8x10 prints from a 3 mega pixel camera (I am a professional photographer and I have done that with the early DSLR cameras). The manufacturers make it sound like you need more mega pixels than you really need, increasing the price of the camera. Mega Pixels DO NOT make a better image... they only make enlargements better (less grainy).

Sorry for the long post. I hope this helps.

I have a question.
I have a camera that has 10x optical zoom. There's a camera that's pretty much the upgrade of mine that has 12x zoom. I'm considering getting it, but I'm wondering how much of a difference that will really make. I use my zoom a lot. Actually, most of the time. Can anyone help me with that?

mrn8
10-30-2007, 12:09 PM
Which camera are you looking at? The Zoom Magnifier is different between different models and brands of digital camera, so you really need to know the mm range to get a true comparison. For instance, the Canon S5 IS and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 both have a 12x zoom. The Canon's actual range is 36mm-432mm and the Panasonic is 35mm-420mm. Not a huge difference, but I just wanted to point out that you can get a greater zoom with different brands of a camera, even though if you look at the zoom rating, you would believe them to be the same.

What I'm going to say is going to tick off a lot of people, but I've found it to be true. Avoid Kodak, Polaroid, and HP cameras. Their image sensors do not last very long in those cameras, so after about 1 year (sometimes even less), your images lose clarity and you are looking for a new camera.

My recommendation in that price range is the Canon A460. It's small and simple to use, as well as well built. If you don't like that one, I'd try to stick with Canon, Sony, Panasonic, or Nikon.

Agreed. A low end Canon model is usually a much better value than even a mid-range model from one of the other brands that mrn8 mentioned.

I've heard this before, but I've had my Kodak for about 3 years and the pictures are just as detailed and crisp as they were when it was new, so I'm having a hard time wanting to get any other brand. I guess I'll have to think about it. Maybe I just got really lucky with the one I have.

Brad or mrn8, can you help me with the difference in the zoom on the cameras I mentioned a couple posts up? lol..even though it's not one you would get...is the zoom significantly better or would I even notice?

mrn8
10-30-2007, 3:06 PM
Not all Kodak cameras are affected by the quality issues, but the percentages are too high for me to be willing to recommend their cameras.

As far as the difference you'll get in that extra zoom range, it will be noticable, but it wouldn't be enough for me to upgrade if I had an adequate camera. The cameras that I'm using right now are both Canon and I didn't upgrade until it was going to be significant. My first is a Canon S110 Digital Elph, and it still works perfectly at 6 years old. The other is a Canon G5, which is now 3 1/2 years old. The pictures that my oldest one take were often better than the Kodak camera's the my friends and family had in the past couple of years. The G5 is still an excellent camera, and it will stick with me at least until I get an SLR, but I'll probably keep using it like I have with my S110. I guess my point here is that if you buy a Canon, you know that the quality is good, because they filter down technology from their upper end cameras into their entry and mid-level cameras.

Take a look at www.dpreview.com and www.steves-digicams.com to find reviews of the cameras that you are specifically looking at. Steve's has a "best of" link that gives you his recommendation on the best cameras in a given category (entry, compact, ultra-zoom, etc).

Thank you! :)
I will check out those links....and I'll definately do my homework before I buy another. I don't really need one. Like I said the one I have I really do love, I just thought if I could get better zoom I would like that....but....maybe I should just stick with what I have right now and look around at others a little.
Thanks again for your help!! :)

I agree that Canon produces quality cameras, especially at the high end, but you are way off about Kodak. For the money, they produce the most user-friendly and best quality cameras on the market. They tied for the top ranking in the 2007 JD Power consumer satisfaction study, and won the top award outright in 2005 and 2006 in the point-and-shoot category (well ahead of Sony). I have three of them in my family, and they have all performed extremely well - no degradation in the sensor or any other issues (one is almost 4 years old - time for an upgrade).

Walgreen's has a Poloroid i733 7.0 MP camera for $109 after $20 Easy Rebate. I believe if you take the Gift Card route, you get $22 back. Takes SD cards and those are very affordable now.

I am in search for a much smaller camera that I can charge up. Mine is a Toshiba that I bought awhile back and is very bulky with a small view window. Also uses batteries and I got through a pack every use.

I plan on visiting family as well as having a few baby's to sneak snaps at so I am looking for a nice view screen, rechargeable, as well as a convenient size :)

Aside from MP's, what other features should I look for in a digital camera? I am looking for one in the $100-$150 range for my 13 yo dd.

You want to look for optical zoom as opposed to digital zoom, and definitely do some online research to at flickr and cnet, etc (here too!) to see the quality of images, features, pros & cons, etc. of any cameras you're considering. Optics are more important than megapixels for quality, since once you get up past 5mp or so, if you're printing regular 4x6 prints without cropping, there won't be much difference. If you're cropping a lot, or printing bigger photos, 7-8mp should be sufficient for most users. Canon's optics have always been quite reliable, and Sony's Carl Zeiss optics are excellent too. Those two brands would be my top two picks. I'd take a 5mp Zeiss lense over a camera with a lesser lense and 8mp any day. Oh, another thing you might want to look for would be a camera that uses the lithium type rechargeable batteries instead of just plain-ol AA's. You'll spend a fortune in batteries otherwise.

I'm in the market for a better camera than I currently have.

Check out the Canon G9 (or G7). I just got a G9 and I'm very happy with it. I'm in the same boat - would love a dslr to replace my old non-digi slr, but not ready to spend the $$$ yet. I did, however want a really good p&s for kids' sports photos, portraits, and macro too. This camera does it all - plenty of manual overrides as well as lots of great scene modes and custom settings too. It's pretty fast, and I've had good success getting shots of my son playing hockey in an indoor rink, in both sports mode and shutter speed priority mode with a high iso and fast shutter speeds. I also got some nice portraits of the kids in both portrait mode and aperture priority mode. Lots of flexibility. It has macro, but I haven't worked with it yet, however the shots I've seen online look pretty darn good. The best price I found was at Amazon a few weeks ago.

Please God, or any corporate BigWig, Let there be a GREAT deal on a SLR camera
on BF. My DS8 Dropped my dig. camera and now is acting up.

If you want to go the SLR route, check Costco - they had the Canon Rebel XT with two lenses and a free 1 or 2 gb (can't remember which) memory card for a pretty darn good price a few weeks ago when I was looking. I almost sprang for it. Almost. But i opted for a p&s instead.

Just went by Best Buy yesterday to get a feel for the cameras, and ours had most of the SLRs pulled from display. Couldn't get a straight answer as to why. :gdparanoid:

I did try out a Sony and a Cannon (can't remember the model numbers). Both were $299, 10x. The Sony was able to manually push to ISO 3200, which is really good for me. However, haven't heard much about the Sony cameras. Sales guy did say that both of those had slight delay times. But for $300 less than the Nikon D40 or the Rebel, how much of a delay time is there and is worth the difference?!?!

Anyways, I'd love to be able to sit there and try them all out at the same time and see how fast I can take the pics. I may not camp out for BF, but hopefully there will be a good sale that weekend on something else and I'll get some more BB bucks -- already have $120 worth :p

I bought a Sony H7 in July and absolutely love it! 15x optical zoom and 8mp. The pictures have been great and I haven't noticed much of a delay. Still trying to figure out all the options but I think it was a great choice!

For those looking at an entry level DSLR I'd opt for the Canon over the Nikon. The Nikon seems to have a higher digital noise issue when shooting at high ISOs.

Also, when you get into the realm of DSLR, you most important purchase is going to be your lenses. Get a feel for what you shoot and how how fast your lens needs to be.

I think you are mistaken. Nikon's are lower noise at higher ISO than canon. You can check any of the review sites and come to that conclusion.

Nikon D3 will shoot at ISO1600 with hardly any noise at all. My D50 has better high ISO noise levels than the XT/XTi.

Isn't the Nikon D40/D40x the best selling dSLR out there right now? Hrm I wonder why?

You might want to check your "best selling" facts.
http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3904/top-5-digital-slrs-for-january.html

You are comparing a 4500.00 camera! For 4500.00 Nikon better be able to produce an image with acceptable noise at 1600. Test it against the MkIII if you want to be fair.

I wish I could post links here to show the horrible noise in the Nikon compared to that of a similar level Canon.

Oh look! I can!

Hi! I'm not sure how much price is a factor in this. You say you have a problem with blurry shots, I understand that!

For $70 bucks more, you could move up the A570 IS which adds image stabalization.
This comes in great for indoor low light shots and night sports.

The A560 is a great point-and-shoot camera, with quality much better than it's entry-level pricing. I've seen the D40 kit's under 450.00. How much better of a deal did you want?

That's a good deal. Curious where? It wasn't the deal that swayed me though - I was on the fence about whether to go dslr or p&s, as I was really looking to replace my p&s that we lost, though I found the dslr's tempting! I still have my old Canon AE-1 if I decide to lug around a slr, and really need something smaller for certain circumstances, so decided on a p&s instead this time around.

the only reason the Nikon D40 might sway me is that I found out my dad's ultra-expensive professional Nikon lens for his old 35 mm will fit the D40 with a kit. The kit is still WAAAAAAAY cheaper than the lens. That's the lens he bought for when he was taking pictures of my dancing professionally, and those pictures always came out great. Back of the theatre, me on stage, sometimes in the back row, and the detail was always great. No flash, too!

But still, to me, I need to have a good speed and the basic camera has to take good pictures. Great lenses help, but if the camera itself takes lousy pics, it doesn't help.

Cheapest I saw the D40 (regular, not the D40x) was $449.00 at Target, but now it's back up.

the D40 / D40x are great cameras, but if you are going to buy one, you should know that they will only Auto-Focus with AF-S and AF-I lenses, so if you have an older lens, everything will probably be manual focus. The higher end Nikons and the entry level Canon cameras have a focus drive, so they can auto-focus with a non AF lens.

Right. I'm also wondering, do you lose any f/stops with the adapters on the Nikons? Also, need to take into account you will be using the lens on a crop body which will change the reach on the lenses. Good on the long end, bad on the short end.

If a person is already in possesion of a stock pile of good lenses that are compatible with a certain brand, then I highly recommend sticking with that brand. :)

SOOOO, i've decided it's def. time for an upgrade to something smaller, lighter, and holds more pictures (I don't need it to take thousands, but maybe 200-400 for vacations). I'd like something with a view screen to see the pics after i take them, no different lenses (not looking to make this a career), flash, good for night shots...you get the idea. I'm looking for a recommendation for a digital camera and/or video camera. I take pics and video of EVERYTHING, and I've tried many times to learn how to set shutter speeds and so on to be a "real" photographer but when it comes time to take a photo, I always just use the standard mode, so I'm looking for something simple, preferably smallish, that will take clear pics. Right now I have a Minolta Z2 that I got in 2004. At the time it was one of only a few cameras that would take video...I love that feature. I'd like to be able to do away with a video camera altogether...or is that crazy? Is there a camera available that would allow me to video a clip and print good quality still pics from it?

I don't need a lot of megapixels because I rarely print larger than 4 x 6. I definitely want plenty of optical zoom and image stabilization. I'd love to be able to take great action shots of my DD on stage during school programs. I don't care if you can add lenses or a flash (my Minolta lets me do that but I've never bothered to learn).

I'd go as high as $700-$800 if I could replace both my camera and video camera, but of course $200-$300 would be better. Am I dreaming? Thanks for any advice!

Welcome to GottaDeal cassidyfan!

From what you say, I would recommend a Canon S5 IS for you. It's an excellent digital point-and-shoot, but can take video clips up the the amount of free storage you have on your card. I don't think that there's really a all-in-one solution, yet, that doesn't have to compromise on either the video or photo side.

I'm going to guess that it's their 7mp model with only digital zoom, which I wouldn't even consider buying. If you are looking for a very basic (and very cheap) entry level camera, you might consider trying to get the Sony DSC-S700 camera from Sears for $89.99. I think the last thing I would ever give up on is the high optical zoom. Nothing better for trips to the zoo, or kids on the playground.

All P&S are going to have a fair amount of shutter lag, some better than others, but I've never heard IS blamed for that though? IS has to do with the lens itself and not the processor. One thing to help decrease your lag by a small amount is to turn off your review shot option. Really though it's going to depend on the processor in the end. If you were to go ahead with the S5 or S3 even, you would be able to have alot of available shooting modes, TV, AV and M. Most times you can fine tune these settings to help you get better shots that what you will be getting in "green box" mose. That would help with your dark long distance shots.

Yeah, that would be a great camera for a 14 year old. I'd say that the Canon A560 ($127 shipped from Amazon.com right now) would be even better, if they have a serious interest in photography. If they are just wanting to snap some pics of whatever they do with their friends, though, the Kodak is adequate.

kimmie - You should be able to find a DSLR kit on BF in the somewhere in the $450-$650 range. Sears has the Nikon D40 kit advertised at $449.99. That may be an easier one to get than to try to get doorbusters at Best Buy, Circuit City or Walmart. Sears will also have the Canon Digital Rebel XT kit for $600. That's not a great deal, because I know I've seen it cheaper in recent days, since it's one kit older than the current Rebel XTi.

Thank you! I thought it was a good price (and it is the EXACT model my son asked for), but I wanted to see what others thought. The cheapest I had seen the A570IS was $199...

I'm getting it! One more present down. :)

I"ll have to go look but, the camera doesn't determine how many pics it can hold, that's the memory card. The bigger the memory card, the more pics. A 2gb card will probably hold about a 1000 jpgs coming off of a 7 mega pixel camera.

Oops.

That's about what you would pay at B&H right now, but you would get a 2gb card also.

Of course you have to weigh in shipping vs. your time in the store.

B&H:
XTi plus 18-55 plus 2gb card $709.95
75-300mm $149.95

I was hoping for a Canon 30D or 40D package deal, but I guess that's a bit over the typical consumer level. Oh well. I may just try to pick up a used 30D if I don't find anything soon.

Of the package deals from BB and CC, I'd say that the Rebel XT package is probably the best value. Plus, Best Buy will have the 2GB Extreme II CF card for a reasonable price ($24.99), which is a good match for a DSLR camera.

I'm guessing at that price, they are actually selling the XTi, then. The standard lens with the 40D would be a 28-135mm lens. I don't see why they would give your the XT / XTi lens with the 40D.

Edit - Yeah, after reading the new posts, my heart rate has slowed a bit.

You can order one of these from Wal-Mart's website right now for $302.54 with free site-to-store shipping.

Flickr has a feature now that allows you to explore photos based on what type of camera took them. I find this is a fantastic way to see both amateur and professional quality photographs that have been taken with the camera I'm curious about.

I'm looking for a camera that does a few specific things. I have been looking at this one and the Canon Rebel and would even consider other cameras if I knew which one to get. I don't want to buy the wrong one. I have wasted enough money on cameras in teh last few years. I need to be able to take sports shots outdoors for soccer and baseball without chaseing my kids around and getting on the field. lol I also want to be able to take a series of shots ( 2-3) quickly. The other important thing is that I need to be able to take decent photos indoors with poor lighting, ie in a gym for awards programs or basketball games. I don't do alot of fancy stuff with my pictures other than red-eye reduction for my blue-eyed kids and cropping. I also don't make posters so I don't need tons of megapixels. Anyone have any thoghts? I'd sure appreciate it. I did see the package deal at BB but wonder if that is too much camera.

Sorry if I'm interrupting a good conversation on HQ cameras, but my sister-in-law is looking for a new digital camera. She currently has some old 3.2 MP camera that takes below average pictures.

She's looking for a nice camera that will takes pictures that would make nice 8x10 prints. She's also looking to keep it around the $100 mark (This is a little flexible, I might convince her to go up to $150). Now, I know more MP the better, but MP isn't exactly what makes a camera good. Any suggestions, what with Best buy and Circuit City's ads released now?

Kathy - I think the SLR package from Best Buy would be great for you, but I think you'd have to get there pretty early to get a ticket for that item. The only reason I recommend this is because you say that you are tired of wasting money on cameras. With a DSLR setup, you can get the lenses that suit your needs and not have to learn a new camera.

However, as far as functionality goes, it sounds like the S3 IS or S5 IS from Canon would both suit your needs. They have a great zoom (better than a stock DSLR kit lens), it can take 1.5 shots per second if you have it on continuous drive, and they have image stabiliztion, so you can get those shots free-handed. Both cameras also have a "sports" mode, to help you capture action shots.

Sounds like everything I want to do with my camera as well.. but one thing, If you
get that once in a lifetime shot of your kid smacking/catching a ball, your gonna want
to blow it up... trust me! :)
I posted this awhile ago on the forum, and wish I had it in more mp's to blow up.
I've taken a couple shots like this, and you cant redo it.. so my advice is, if you
can afford it, get the ones with more mps. :)

Welcome to GottaDeal, Jim!

For $200, I would much rather recommend to you a camera that has an optical zoom. The digital only zoom cameras will soon disappoint you, since anything that you zoom in on will not have great quality.

For ultra-compact cameras under $200, I don't think you can go wrong with a Canon SD1000 or a Sony DSC-W80. Take a look at them (www.dpreview.com is a good place to start) and see what you think. You should be able to walk into any electronics department and handle those cameras, too, so that you can compare them physically.

I really don't think there is going to be a good deal on one. Canon doesn't generally budge on the pricing until the next model comes out. Since the 40D has only been out since Sept. It's not going to happen anytime soon. Sadly, the Canon rebates were kind of a joke this year too.

Very good suggestion. Great camera for great price. 7.2 MP is more than enough for 8x10's. I've seen great 8x10's from a 4MP camera.

If anyone is looking for a good deal on the Canon Rebel XT digital camera, Amazon.com has it for $499.98 with free shipping. :) That beats Best Buy's BF deal at $549 plus you don't have to pay tax with amazon. You also get a free camera strap if you look further down the page.

I've been looking for a good deal on this camera for awhile and was leery to buy it from an unknown dealer on the internet. CNet.com rates this camera VERY highly, even better than the XTi which is supposed to be its predecessor.

Circuit City has a decent price on it through today plus 10% off and a free printer to boot, but I didn't need the printer and wanted to save the extra money.
Just wanted to give you a heads up!

Happy picture taking,
Nicole

I, like many others am looking for a good in-expensive entry level camera. I like what you have to say about the Canon A560 and if for me, would jump on it.... BUT it looks a little "bulky". I have a teen girl, who wants slim compact camera(you know, slip in a pocket, small purse at prom ect). Anything you would recommend, keeping it under 150.00 IF possible? Open to BF or other deals available!!!

Hi. I am new to this site and these boards. I do not know if this is the appropriate place to ask but I was wondering if anyone out there might be able to help me with a video camera question. I have a 14 year old son that has asked for a video camera with a fisheye lens for Christmas. I have found the lenses on Amazon and ebay but I have no idea what type of video camera can use them. I have 5 kids so I cannot spend too much. Does anyone know any affordable options that might be out there for me or any source I can go to in order to learn about these?

Thanks for your time.

Ah, I went to check out the Canon A560 at Sears today...pretty light and compact, and they had it on sale for $119! :eyepoppin less than their BF ads...interesting. I bought it on Amazon.com though so I could get the charger/batteries and the calender for free and no sales tax (it's 6% in PA)...i'm excited though, it's what santa is bringing ME this year :yup: thanks for all the help guys, i would've been lost without you :D

I have never used a digital SLR before and am strongly considering getting either the Canon at Best Buy or Circuit City. Can anyone give me any feedback on which deal to go with? Have there been any other Digital SLR deals out there?

:cheesy:

Thank you Thank you for the wonderful advice. I signed on to Amazon and bought one just as soon as I read your post. Can't wait to get it. And, not only does it sound like a fabulous camera, it came with a free battery charger ($39.94 value)and a free code from Shutterfly to make a photo calendar ($19.99 value).:cheesy:

Those shutterfly calendars are great! My aunt got a similar deal but doesn't have a computer so she sent me the codes & I made one for her - it looks beautiful! Very professional! Just make sure you have the largest possible images - the bigger the file, the better quality the picture will be when it's printed.

see if you can catch the canon sd1000 on sale - i've seen it dropping in price lately. it was on sale at gateway for 152.99 last week, but i'm not sure if it's still on sale. i saw it at best buy for 180 the other day.

I really don't think there is going to be a good deal on one. Canon doesn't generally budge on the pricing until the next model comes out. Since the 40D has only been out since Sept. It's not going to happen anytime soon. Sadly, the Canon rebates were kind of a joke this year too.

Yeah, that is pretty much what I thought. I know the price will be the same wherever I buy it, but I'm hoping that maybe someone will throw in an extra lens (although it probably won't be a very good one) or something like that. I know that when the 40D came out, it was selling for practically the same price as what the 30D was selling for, which totally infuriated a friend of mine that had just bought one a few months before. I guess I'll give it a few more weeks, and then probably just break down and get it.

If that one drops under $150, I'll probably be buying it for my wife. It's a great camera and it won't take up much space in her purse.

As for the BF cameras that are ultra-compact and still decent, the 7.2mp Casio Exilim cameras that Sears and Circuit City will have for $139.99 would both be good buys. They are very small, but still turn out a good quality photo.

DaFees - The Canon A560 is currently $127 shipped from Amazon.com, and that's a better camera and better deal than I've seen in the BF ads for entry-level digital cameras. If I were her, I'd jump on that one and free up a shopping item on BF.

If you're interested in the 8 mega-pixel Rebel XT then go with the Amazon.com deal that's available now. Like I said in my above post, CNet.com rates it higher than the 10 mega-pixel XTi, its cheaper by a few hundred dollars, AND you don't have to fight the crowds.

mrn8
11-11-2007, 11:19 AM
The choice between and XT and XTi should depend on what you use the camera for. There are small differences between them, but if you like to take shots in continuous mode, the XTi is for you. The processor on the XTi is a lot faster and can store more during the write time, so there's less lag time before your camera is ready to go again.

The advantages that the XTi has over the XT is: 2.5" LCD vs 1.8" LCD, 9-point focus (Eos 30D AF) vs 7-point focus (Eos 30 AF), faster continuous drive, 10mp vs 8mp.

I think the reason that most people preferred the XT is that is had a slightly larger hand grip, which I agree is a good feature on an SLR. The biggest thing that will improve SLR shots (besides learning how to use the camera) will be the glass. Both cameras are capable of great photos, even with a beginner using it, but as you really start to learn the camera, the addition of some purpose-specific lenses will really allow the cameras to shine. Either one will be excellent and as a first SLR camera, the XT is perfect.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of the 2 cameras: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos350d%2Ccanon_eos400d&show=all

What would it cost to get the extra lens, bag, and battery, that Best Buy has on their BF sale? Would I be saving a ton of money by fighting the crowds? Also, how important do you think the extended warranty is on a camera like this?

mrn8
11-11-2007, 11:41 AM
The extras would cost you about $250 from a shop like B&H Photo or Adorama. Honestly, it's a decent deal, and allows you to get pretty much everything you need all at once. I'd also add a UV filter for each lens to protect the glass, but you could pick up 2 of those for less than $10.

Okay, got another question re: the xt and xti.
I've read a lot on some photo forums about taking pics in RAW.
And noticed that the xt only had 4 RAW frames, and the XTI had 10!
I'm not really sure what RAW is, (still learning), but is this something
that is going to be important as I improve my photography skills?

mrn8
11-11-2007, 12:09 PM
RAW is basically a full (uncompressed) image. The frames that you are talking about are how many of the RAW images the camera can store in the buffer while in continuous mode. This means that the XT can store 4 full images while the camera is writing to the card, while the XTi can store 10 full images. A fast card (Sandisk Extreme II / III cards) is a good investment for a DSLR camera.

One more thing about RAW.

Once I used it, I would NEVER use jpg again!

When first starting with a SLR there is a major learning curve, unless you are going to be shooting in green box mode, your pictures may not look as great as your ultra fancy P&S. It takes time! :D

With Raw though you can go into a program like Digital Photo Professional (included with Canon DSLRS) and apply the amount of sharpening, color saturation, things like that. You can do that in PhotoShop with .jpgs, but in my experience, I get better results with doing it on RAWS. Also you can "save" shots that you might have messed up with under or over exposure better than in .jpg format.

When you shoot in .jpg the camera processes the image it it's specifications, with RAW you can do it to yours. To me, that made a HUGE difference.

With the lenses. I would go with the kit lenses to begin with. For a few months get a feel for the focal length that you use most. Then you can move up to better quality lenses in that range. No need to put out that money on a lens you won't use that much. I think alot of people are going to get sticker shock when it comes to buying quality lenses, and those are the most important thing.

Thanks,

If you are going to be shooting RAW then the bigger the better. It saves time having to transfer cards. I shoot alot of sports so every second I spend changing a card can mean a great shot lost. One my 30D, I can get 245 RAW images on one 2GB card. I haven't really checked it out on my 40D and can't remember on my XT or XTi.

I haven't really looked at deals on CF cards yet this year though. But throughout the year, Staples has great sales.

I guess you have to decide if, for you, the extra lens and bag, etc is worth the $200 + tax price difference from the Amazon price plus lining up Thanksgiving night at Best Buy. If you're already going to be there and want that lens go for it!

I personally chose to buy the amazon deal because this is my first DSLR, our tax here is very high (it would be an extra $60), and I don't know if I'll really need the extra lens- or if it is that good- in the long run. As Longhorn Mama said, you may decide to upgrade to a better lens down the road which will usually put you out more than the camera cost in the first place.
Plus, Best Buy scares me on Black Friday!

The only product I've ever really needed the extended warranty on is my laptop due to the battery failing twice and having to replace the hard drive. Again, personal decision though Consumer Reports says that they usually aren't a good idea.

I've been looking for a good deal on this camera for awhile, I'm just hoping I got one!

I am going to have a really hard time selling my wife on expenses lenses for a while. I am looking at buying the camera on Amazon and then going to BB to pick up the 75-300 lens. They are running it for 211. I have been told it is good to have a close-up and a long-range lens so this would fit me for a while, right?

Would it be wise to go ahead and pick up an extra battery at the same time?

Also, is it necessary to spend a few extra dollars to get the silver casing XT due to the scratching on the black model XT?

B&H has the 75-300 for 149.00 as of yesterday. I got some great shots from this lens when I had it. I think it gets a bad rap because it isn't one of the coveted "L" lenses. I would totally go for the black XT as opposed to the silver! Always go black. The resale valuse holds better. If you ever decide to get a Vertical battery grip for it, they only come in Black so it will look better.

The kit 18-55 and 75-300 should do you well for a long time. If you ever decide to go wide angle or macro, I totally endorse the Sigma brand lenses. You can get the extra battery if you want. It's always good to have 2, but I would look online at Sterlingtek for batteries. About 1/3 the price and a longer life cycle.

Thanks again for all the great info. I was almost ready to go and order the XT but then I was told by a Best Buy salesman that the XTi has a new technology that knocks off all of the dirt and dust of the sensors and keeps it cleaner. Plus it is faster. Is that worth the extra money alone for those features?

Regarding other stores, I may end up paying a bit more at BB for the lens because I have a $250 gift card and a 10% coupon. But B&H does sound like a good place to shop.

Also, how big of a CF card can these cameras take? 2GB? 4GB? 8GB?

Ah.... the Anti-Dust system! There are so many mixed reviews on this. I personally wouldn't spend the extra cash for that feature alone. It won't knock off ALL of the dust at all. It's a fact. You will get dust on your sensor. Can't be helped. Truth be told, alot of the DSLR's come with dust. No extra cost of course. ;) But, you figure in the extra megapixels, the 9 point AF, the higher fps, it really does pay off.

B&H is THE store to purchase camera gear from IMHO. Adorama is good too, but B&H wins my vote based on excellent customer service and a great return/exchange policy. Those are the only online merchants besides the big box stores that I would ever trust.

The highest GB CF card I ever used was 4GB and it was fine.

Just got back from Ritz camera and heres a Tip for the dust issue:
Salesperson says to always shut your camera off while your changing lenses,
cuz if not, it will suck the dust right in it. Also it cost $75 to send it out to clean.
