View Full Version : Where do you shop first on Black Friday?
ChristmasShopping 8-29-2007, 9:19 PM I know a lot of you will say " It depends on the ads" but for me, I normally always seem to start at Wal-Mart because I can price match and get their deals. Also, it is open 24hrs and I don't have to stand outside in the cold.
I normally hit Target next, then Wal-greens, Best Buy, Old Navy, Kohls, Bath and Body works and then the Mall.
So where do you normally start shopping on Black Friday?
sunni0913 8-29-2007, 9:55 PM I usually go to Walmart first unless Kmart has something really good because they open an hour earlier than Walmart and I can get in and out and back to Walmart before everything is gone.
dmmiller 8-29-2007, 9:58 PM Usually in the past, It was walmart, but I'm starting to get
braver, and go to CC & BB. :)
Marcster 8-29-2007, 10:21 PM Usually, OfficeMax for 6 am opening.
sns128 8-29-2007, 10:33 PM For me it's Wal-Mart since it's about the only store around here plus they price match just about everyone. After that I'll go to Walgreens if they have anything I want and to Target (about 20 minutes away) if I couldn't price match something at Wal-Mart.
Christy Garner 8-29-2007, 10:36 PM Walmart for me so I can pricematch, Target, Best Buy, Kohls, Sears, Bath & Body Works. Those are my main stores but I go other places too.
ms_mckenna 8-29-2007, 10:42 PM Gotta go with BB it used to be Kmart but the past two years they have not had much.
stacya 8-29-2007, 11:18 PM The past two years, it's been Kohl's...they've opened at 5, and my next stop is generally Target, which doesn't open til 6...my sister generally gets whatever we need at Wal-Mart at 5, or has someone else get stuff for both of us from there so we can focus on other stores...
Kaarak 8-29-2007, 11:22 PM Target, Walmart, Old Navy, Kohls. Though honestly it depends!
supershopper1 8-29-2007, 11:23 PM 1:oo am est. online! If it has free shipping it's even better. It's cold here in Ohio not much fun standing outside.
What happened to Gabriels the Best of NY??? We use to get the best deals there on high end items from Bloomingdales, Crate & Barrell, William Sonoma etc. on BF. Last year they did'nt have it.:(
Melissa 8-30-2007, 7:41 AM Walmart at 5:00am, then Target opens at 6:00am.
nedsw33 8-30-2007, 8:47 AM The past few years, I've found myself at Best buy first, then after that, we typically just head where the ads lead us. Almost always hit up Target & Wal-Mart too.
kselzer 8-30-2007, 9:08 AM Usually BB first. Then I run over to Sears to get the $10 gift card since it's across the parking lot. Then to Meijer's or Target and then who knows where!
wyntyrose 8-30-2007, 9:09 AM Usually Walmart but I am thinking of hitting up the PX this year, they have great door prizes. Honestly until the ads start rolling in I am not sure. This is the first year we have target here in Watertown so maybe there. Too many choices what will I do :cheesy:
misshayley 8-30-2007, 9:25 AM I go to WalMart so I can Price match and they are open 24hours so we get to wait inside
rogue1230 8-30-2007, 9:44 AM Walmart for me, although after last year I am not so sure, there's New target in town and a kohls to be opening for November so Wally is going to have to do something to get my attention this year.
shopping mom 8-30-2007, 9:47 AM For a few years it was Wal-mart, but last year I started with Sears. DD wanted a video camera and they had one and they priced matched the PSP those were the high items on my list.
berry1014 8-30-2007, 10:36 AM We go to walmart first cause it is in our town. All the other stores we go to are over in Delaware. So we go to walmart then swing by home to unload and then head to delaware to finish our shopping.
littlesdcen 8-30-2007, 11:37 AM Same here Walmart.
love a deal 8-30-2007, 1:12 PM Wal-Mart
julz0420 8-30-2007, 1:32 PM I always hit Wal Mart first because its the only store in my town that does BF. (no other big stores, although we are FINALLY getting a Walgreens next yr)
Then off to the next town for Sears, Target, Toys R Us, Walgreens, etc.......
Julie
emismom67 8-30-2007, 2:37 PM We have a group of people who have worked out a real system. We each are assigned a store, get everyone's list for your stop, then head out for mega-shopping. My husband and I usually get the Menards stop which is always a big list! With this plan, we can get everything we want from all the stores and still be able to meet up for breakfast by 10 am. We unload the cars and then head out again!:yup:
hnybee411 8-30-2007, 2:55 PM Usually I did Kohl's, then best buy, then target or walmart, then the mall.
Last year though I started with wal-mart early. Got the stuff I wanted to price match and then waited by the pallet of vsmiles. Then I hit best buy and then toys r us and then kohl's. It worked out so much better as I got everything I wanted and missed most of the crowds. Did have lines to wait in, but that's part of the day.
djinniman 8-30-2007, 5:15 PM We almost always hit Walmart first at 5 am, because we don't have to wait outside in the cold that way. Only exception was when Kaybee toys opened at 4 several years ago.
Gumball 8-30-2007, 5:17 PM Usually I'll start with Walmart since I know they always have stuff I want. Anywhere else depends on their ads or if I'm with friends.
sigrist_2000 8-30-2007, 5:57 PM almart to pricematch and then target, and then meijers to price match other stuff i couldnt at walmart..and towards the end of sales best buy...hoping the line is gone
lol
Walmart to price match then usually Target. We end the day at the mall.
Bunniq 8-30-2007, 10:44 PM Last year we went to Wal-Mart first, then we made the mistake of heading to Toys-R-Us where there was a line wrapped around the store to check out. We left there and my aunt was lucky to get all of the toy items she had on her list.
Due to recent changes we will be heading to Sears first I will wait for the other ads to determine second.
dswright 9-3-2007, 6:02 PM Meijer
jarerice 9-3-2007, 6:06 PM Walmart is always first. I think this year we will bring 2 cars. We almost didn't get everything in the truck last year.
jaymacfla 9-3-2007, 9:37 PM Best Buy:yup:
jellybean051901 9-4-2007, 4:53 AM Almost always WM...I did go to Value City first one year though
Tangogirl 9-5-2007, 12:46 AM Walmart or Target first-we never hit BB or CC or Fry's until after 8am-we can't fight worth a quarter!!:D
Spotted1 9-5-2007, 2:40 PM Walmart.
We only have walmart & kmart nearby (and even those are a good 30 minute drive, minimum, away), anything else will have us on the road nearly 2 hours one way. :eyepoppin
queenki 9-6-2007, 10:03 AM I have found my self at Walmart first so far every year. Because they seem to open first for what I want and then I go from there.
noaimhere 9-6-2007, 11:18 AM I usually go to the mall for Penneys, bonton and Macys
inkpay33 9-9-2007, 3:28 PM Always Target.
I always end up at WalMart, 2 or 3 of my group go to Target and we catch up with them there. Then off to the Mall and Toys R Us which are about 30 mins. away.
Last year was the first time I actually experienced Black Friday as a consumer, rather than an employee where I worked at a mall for 7 years. My wife and I went up to the Outlet Mall in Jackson, NJ where they had a midnight opening for over 75% of the entire mall. After a couple of hours, we headed home and unloaded the car. Around 3:00AM, I took my car to Best Buy and my wife went to the local shopping mall and waited in line at KB Toys.
Hopefully, the outlets will have the same sale again this year, as we got some really good deals at a few stores. The only thing is that we felt like the oldest ones there, since there were many high school students roaming around.
carolannec 9-11-2007, 12:39 PM We'll be at Toys R Us.
limabean 9-14-2007, 11:44 AM Target then Kohl's.
JazzMama 9-18-2007, 10:16 AM Usually Wal-Mart since it's 24 hrs and I don't have to stand outside!
rldelo 9-18-2007, 12:15 PM I've done WalMart, Sears, and Elder Beerman first. I won't do WM or Sears first again--WM is too chaotic, and Sears was too disorganized and slow and ate up too much time in line.
My ritual is more about my 2nd and 3rd stop, which have traditionally been Staples and Walgreens in that order. Just has to do with location, opening time, and the items I've wanted. I've had good luck with both of those stores every year.
pelles20 9-18-2007, 12:39 PM Last year my sister and I started a new tradition. On Thanksgiving after mapping out everywhere we needed to go and for what, we left Thanksgiving night at midnight and went to Meier because they are open 24-7. They were getting their sale items out at midnight but you could not purchase them until 5am when they officially opened. So, at midnight we stopped at a gas station and got coffee and took a couple of NO DOSE and headed to Meier. We loaded our carts at midnight and checked out at 5am. We shopped from Thursday night at midnight until black friday at ten oclock that night!!! It was amazing and I am sure that we will do it again!!
Since electronics are my main target, Circuit City is the best option.
Why?
Best Buy and Circuit City almost have the same items, but Best Buy is over-loaded.
H_Hancock 9-18-2007, 9:40 PM We primarily electronics shop first and that means Best Buy first, again. Tried Circuit City a couple of years ago, but they were horribly disorganized and had to deal with those damned rebates to get the cheap prices.
Since BB ended their rebates almost entirely on their doorbusters a couple of years ago, we end up there now first.....hate rebates.....and this BB is so well organized and the staff there goes out of their way to make what could easily turn out be a rather unpleasant experience into one that you can at least tolerate brings me back to that store year after year.
When we finish at BB, we hit Sears......jewelry, clothes, etc.
Wal-Mart....an afterthought every year. We stop by one half way between our house and the BB we frequent (the BB is 2 hours from us), and every year this Wal-Mart still has almost all its doorbusters still in stock at 1-2PM.....well, everything but laptops and computers. Last year, LCDs and plasmas were a big craze, as they probably will be again this year. This Wal-Mart had pallets of all their doorbuster LCDs left at 2PM. Probably won't be any different this year, either.
JCBeBe31 9-18-2007, 11:20 PM For me, it's usually Circuit City or Target. However, my Black Friday shopping this year will be quite the challenge. My brother refuses to come home for Thanksgiving since South Carolina and Clemson have their game the Saturday after Thanksgiving. So we're going to all head down to our house there and have Thanksgiving. So instead of shopping near the house I'm going to make my way out to another area where everything sort of is together. lol
bjflynn05 9-18-2007, 11:42 PM It's Wal-Mart for me because its only 30 minutes away every thing else is either an hour and half away to the north to Colonial Heights, VA or a hour and a half away to the south to Raleigh, NC.
kellane26 9-19-2007, 11:50 AM Wal-Mart seems to be a poplar choice. I may have to check them out, especially since there's the possibility they'll price match.
slinkster65 9-19-2007, 12:04 PM Last year my dad and I went to home depot first. Mainly because it is closest to the house and sicne there are so many around where we live in GA we knew it wouldn't be busy. Got there right at 6 and there were maybe 8 people there as they opened the door.
I might test BB this year but where it is and the amount of people around that area...crazy!
A couple years ago we hit HH Gregg first, so depending on who has what ti will be Home Depot or Hh Gregg...or BB/CC if there is just too good a deal to pass up.
AndreaInNC 9-19-2007, 12:48 PM I'll hit the outlet mall at midnight, then move down the road to the 24/7 Walmart to gather up all my items for pricematching. Depending on the time, I'll head over to BestBuy. I'll hit Target sometime that day since they don't really do "doorbusters" anymore and last year I got rainchecks on the items they didn't have. Then to Circuit City. It all depends on timing for me and if my Walmart will price match.
DramaQueenLucy 9-19-2007, 1:53 PM Best Buy then Target after that I always plan on stopping at Ace but I haven't made it yet :tongue1:
love2beurwifey 9-19-2007, 1:58 PM I Usually Start At Walmart Because They Are 24 Hours So I Put All Of The Stuff In My Basket That I Have To Price Match And Then I Put The Other Stuff In The Ad In There When The Sale Starts So That I Can Go Straight To The Line.
mommyofanangelb 9-19-2007, 11:22 PM I live in DE where there's tax-free shopping, so we usually head up Philly first thing to their malls and shops. By the time we get back home, the out-of-staters are gone and we still get back early enough for some early birds specials.
jellybean051901 9-20-2007, 1:04 AM Wal-Mart seems to be a poplar choice. I may have to check them out, especially since there's the possibility they'll price match.
MAke sure you check whatever WM you will be going to for thei specific PM policies. They vary sometimes
I go to target, Kohls and sometimes JC Pennys.
Stacy
Wheezay 9-20-2007, 9:45 AM Sears is always first. :yup:
kimmie0712 9-20-2007, 10:36 AM Last year we hit TRU first then hit Kohl's. In years past we have hit Kohls first though. For me it depends on the ads. :)
dereksmommy 9-20-2007, 2:38 PM always walmart first then target and wherever we need to go
marcimomof4 9-20-2007, 4:57 PM We hit Wal-Mart, Target, Toys R us, KB toys then we end at the mall.
All this talk of black Friday is making me want to shop. LOL
autumnroser 9-21-2007, 12:11 PM walmart, kmart, target and fianlly toys r us.
likewhoa 9-21-2007, 1:56 PM Last year it was Sears, Home Depot, Target, then the mall. This year it all depends on the ads. I want a huge tv!
conleybunch 9-23-2007, 1:27 PM We usually start at Meijer to price match. What is a good to time arrive? Last year my sister and I arrived at 4:00 because you can get inside and pull some items off the shelves that are on sale, but we found that people were already there with their carts loaded. So, if anyone can give us a heads up of what time we should arrive, we would greatly appreciate it!!
carebear1051 9-24-2007, 10:08 AM Wal-Mart then Target for me
money167 9-28-2007, 1:59 PM Last year tried 24hour CVS first but prices won't start until 6am so went to meiers for the 20inch LCD for $99 after rebate got there at about 12:30 and wandered around. Noticed a line in electronics so I get in line with a cart. At some point they decide to split the line between the tv I want and the tv combo. Lucky most want the combo. They say that there are a certain number (forgot pricise) many, I count the people ahead of me to figure my odds. When they bring out the pallet there is a mad dash and I do get one. Check out with a couple other items that I had in my cart done around 5:05am. I drive by Target next door but long line and not open so next to that Circuit City. I get my dvds in about 10 minutes and then spent about 2hours in line to pay. Then Target is a breeze, after that I hit CVS and Walgreens I then go home to sleep.
mcapel4444 9-28-2007, 8:29 PM Hmmmm. It really depends on who has what on sale. On different years, we have hit up Frye's- game boy ds package for a great price, Walmart- 27 inch tv, Kmart- for I can't remember what. lol Last year we were at Best Buy.
Turtle Mommy 9-29-2007, 5:05 PM Walmart!
mccabefamily29 9-30-2007, 3:19 PM Always Walmart :D
BFQueenofNY 9-30-2007, 4:31 PM Normally it is Walmart but last year it was Target. In my case, it is where the toys are first
kennedy's mom 10-1-2007, 2:13 AM In the past it has been Kohl's since they open earlier and then TRU but this year I am going to be brave and be in line at BB at around 4PM thanksgiving.
MICKEY3601 10-1-2007, 2:25 PM For me it really does depend on the ads and what I need, but generally it is Wal-Mart. :D
Miss Star 10-2-2007, 11:34 PM Usually Wal-Mart, last year we didn't even go there nothing we really wanted, so we went to Meijer's and Walgreens instead. This were thinking of adventuring to the mall, never been there on BF!
pmdemey 10-3-2007, 8:54 AM Walmart first since it is closer and 24/7 then head out of town with lots of coffee. I have no one to keep up with me so I go solo.:superman: :argue_cur
lorilwayne 10-3-2007, 3:55 PM In the past two years it was Wally world. The year before that it was Menards- in fact I was the first in line. As a whole I base where I go first on what I really want to get. This year- who knows. Will depend on what I really am after and whether my mom can go shopping that day in another town or not. We tag team over cell phones with what both of us want or need to get.
billcsho 10-5-2007, 9:07 AM Originally I have no idea where to go first this year as CompUSA has closed and I did most of my BF shopping online before stores opened. However, someone just mentioned Meijer and that reminded me that was usually the place I went first as they open 24hr and the discounts appear in the system before 5am. (If not, I can always go back for a price adjust later before noon).
Netter40 10-22-2007, 7:19 AM My cousin and I start out about 4:30 am. We usually got to Walmart first. Then hit a Mcdonalds for coffee on are way to Kmart. Then it's off to Columbus, Ohio. We usually got from one side to the other. Depending on what sales there are to which stores we get to then.
mcwalker 10-22-2007, 9:22 AM Last year was my first BF. Nephew and I joined line at BB at 4:00AM, then went to Wallmart, Target, Kohls, OfficeMax, Staples, different Kohls, then picked up wife and back to Kohls. Not sure for this year, but I am looking for an HDTV with very specific dimensions, so it may depend on whether anyone has just the right HDTV for me.
nmcnary17 10-22-2007, 11:02 AM Target, Kmart, Kohls, and then the mall.
money13 10-23-2007, 3:09 AM Bestbuy, Target, Kohls is a good one found good quality jewlery deals there past couple years. No Wallmart for me to crowded for not that good of sales for where I live. Kmart is always a fan favorite.
Then a nice lunch, yahoooo!
pmdemey 10-23-2007, 8:31 AM WAL-MART on line IF I give them my money this year, Then Old Navy, Menards and Bath and Body.
scjets 10-23-2007, 9:33 PM Best Buy
LUCINDA574 10-23-2007, 9:43 PM Usually Walmart, now I dont know...
Mikesgirl 10-23-2007, 9:48 PM i used to go to Walmart first now it will be either target or tru!
atellis 10-24-2007, 6:08 PM Wal-Mart, always. I usually get their DVD's as fast as possible and price-match, then I head over to Best Buy/Circuit City, then Target.
I can't wait until Black Friday!
Princess7915 10-24-2007, 6:17 PM Kohls for the past few years. We did really well last year, plus a few bargins for myself. But I always tend to map out my day according to the ads. Walmart never ranks high on my list and I have a strong feeling that this year I will not bother.
Kohls, Target and Mall
Stacy
coleman4905 10-24-2007, 11:51 PM I know a lot of you will say " It depends on the ads" but for me, I normally always seem to start at Wal-Mart because I can price match and get their deals. Also, it is open 24hrs and I don't have to stand outside in the cold.
I normally hit Target next, then Wal-greens, Best Buy, Old Navy, Kohls, Bath and Body works and then the Mall.
So where do you normally start shopping on Black Friday?
the same here,..Walmart is usually my first stop and open 24 hirs makes it even better
H_Hancock 10-25-2007, 4:52 AM Black Friday is mainly an electronics shopping day for us.....so Best Buy is our first choice each year, esp. since BB got rid of the rebates almost entirely on their products two years ago. I do enjoy the doorbusters and the like being priced "out the door" in the BB ads vs. the "after rebates" junk that CC and CUSA seem to cling to.
I wish Fry's and MicroCenter were closer. Maybe one day I'll just give in and make the 3+ hour trip to ATL to wait at one of those. Of course, I'm driving almost 2 hours to get to the BB we frequent for BF, but it's a lot easier drive than going to ATL.
We avoid Wal-Mart like the plague on BF.....at least until the early bird crowds die off. Typically, we'll hit a Wal-Mart that's in a small town on our drive back home....in Waynesboro, GA. Even after 12N....over the last 2-3 years at least....stopping in at noon or later at that particular WM gave a better experience....no crowds and still almost all the doorbusters still in stock. They do tend to run out of the laptops and desktop computers and some of the toys, but the rest are usually around. But WM is our very last stop before hitting the house.
We hit Sears after BB.......I try to be within the first 5-10 in line at BB, so we can get in and out in under a half hour. Last year, was first in line.....was back on the road in less than 25 minutes.
chzypoof2 10-25-2007, 10:11 AM I always go to Wal Mart first...
Kellylumbard 10-25-2007, 10:21 AM walmart first and I price match as much as possible. then move on to the little mall we have that has target, old navy, bath and body, kohls. Last year i went to sears walked up got my free gift card and left and came back after the rush to use my card lol.
drmy91 10-25-2007, 10:23 AM Normally it has been Walmart but last year it was Target and I think it will be Target again this year.
BF in Iowa 10-25-2007, 1:55 PM Last year, the best deals were at Menard's (but crowd control and line crashers were big problems!), then to Target, Sears (for the gift cards they give out), then to the mall for the shopping bags with numbered tickets...wait around the mall til 10 am when they draw for the misc. gifts (donated by merchants) and the 2-3 big value gift certificates. By then, hubby is on his way in to work after buying his own bargains (usually Best Buy) and I head home.
SuggaD 10-25-2007, 1:58 PM Bestbuy to get the doorbusters. Then ToyRUs, Target, Circuit City, Walmart, JC Penney & Macy's. Pretty much in that order. All day affair.
lisajonathan00 10-25-2007, 2:10 PM I have always gone to wal-mart first. It is only 20 minutes from me and I leave from there to empty my car at home and travel 1-2 hours for the rest.
jlouie 10-26-2007, 12:08 AM Circuit City first cause BB is too crazy. Then Office Max but with no FAR, office max is nothing for me. Then the mall.
This year, I think I will do CC online and then office max if they have FAR or TJ Maxx or Staples and then possibly target. I want to get some cheap toys for the toy drive and then the mall.
lovebears65 10-26-2007, 6:01 AM We start at Best Buy every year.. Cant beat thier deals on electronics and we are and electronic family :tongue1: last year was so crazy we only went to best buy and came home. I had plans to go to Parisians and some other stores but I was so pooped out from being in that stupid computer line for 5 hours :yuck: for a computer that wasnt even for me:no:
mom2thegirls 10-26-2007, 7:54 AM JC Penney to get the snowglobe, then across the street to Target.
beergirl977 10-29-2007, 9:52 AM I usually start at Mejers and Target and then I work my way to the mall and go to JcPenney's, Macy's, Bath & Body Works and Yankee Candle
ChrisKsAngel 11-4-2007, 9:37 AM well first I scan the ads and see who has what I want most.
However, for the past few years I have hit Circuit City first, while I send my husband to Best Buy. From there it is on to Target, then maybe to Kohl's, Macy's, etc.
I stay away from Walmart & Kmart. :(
WonderWmn999 11-4-2007, 4:31 PM Ok, depends on the ads for me, but usually it's Walmart, especially since they do price matching. After that it's Kmart, unless they don't have what I want, by than I can usually get over to Circuit City before it opens. If I'm in CC and they are out of an item, I call their 800# while in the store and order for that price. From there I'll cruise over to Target, than maybe the mall, cruise into Toys R Us, but usually turn right around unless I have to get something from there because the amount of people and the lines in there are just way overwhelming. After that I check out Gamestop, than hop over to 5 Below, Old Navy and than Walgreens before checking back into Walmart for a more casual look through. I steer clear of Best Buy. If there is something in their ad that is a have to get, I'll check out Walmart's stock on it before even attempting BB. I just don't like waiting in the checkout line that long. I used to head over to Comp USA, but they closed. Oh, and sometime in there, usually right before heading home, I will go by Kohl's.
