I know this was a hot topic last year. Some store did and some stores did not do price matching. Lets chat about it here and post questions!

First off, a few reminders about price matching, folks. There were some problems last BF.

Always check first to see if they will price match on BF. Depending on their policy, some store chains do and some don't due to it being a special occasion. And the policy varies from store to store. For example, the Best Buy closest to your neighborhood may match some items, but the Best Buy closest to me won't.

The item you're trying to price match must match the item in the ad EXACTLY, right down to the specific model/serial number. Otherwise they probably won't do it. Sometimes doorbuster items like the cheap laptops and computers will be exclusive only to that store. For example, the Wal-Mart cheap laptop a few years back was a Pavillion model #2308wm. You may find a Pavillion laptop with a model #2308 but the 'wm' at the end makes it exclusive to that store and you probably won't find that model anywhere else.

They will tell them that they want a million units and they will ship the million units among the stores so each store might get 5, 10, or 20 computers. Ditto. You can't price match what'cha don't have in stock.

Now, not all the laptops and desktops will be like that. The more exoensive ones will probably be non-specific models and be price matchable. Just the cheaper, more popular ones everyone in front of the BF line will want will be special. And keep in mind those are usually the ones with specs slightly going outta style, hence one reason why Dell and HP/Compaq make such deals with Wal-Mart and Best Buy: to get rid of 'em.

Last year Sears was great about Pricematching the PSP. They priced matched I got DD's discount plus I used the $10 gift card they gave me. Since I wanted so many other items there I was glad they did it. (I had checked to be sure a few days before)

The Wal-Mart near me did pricematch however they wouldn't let your purchase the item until the time the store opened. For example, we wanted to purchase some v-smile games that were in the Target ad. When we went to check out at 5:45 am the cashier told us we had to wait until 6:00 am which is when Target's prices went into effect (their opening time).

Now see, my local walmart that I have ALWAYS pm'ed at decided last year that they wouldn't because we are an hour away from all the stores that we could pm. Now, there are NO other stores less than an hour away, so I chose to drive the hour away and for the first time ever did not shop local for Christmas.

When I got back home however, I heard that they ended up pm'ing after all. I guess in the end I'm glad I left town, because if I had stayed home and they had not pm'ed my items -:gdparanoid: Man I would have been upset. Thankfully I found out the night before by talking to the manager.

My local Wal-Mart does pm even though all the closest stores are half an hour away. I asked the manager last year specifically about it, he said he would just so people would stay in town and shop there. Not sure if that will be the case again this year, I'll have to catch him again to find out since I don't work there anymore.

Sometimes you can get away with it. All depends on the situation, if the cashier is in a good mood, and whether you've got a hoard of other PM items behind it for 'em to look forward to. I know at our local Wal-Mart for some major items on BF, like the computers and popular TVs, they're told specifically not to PM those for any reason.

i usually price match the small stuff...lol...yeah it does depend on the cashier too...thats why u need to scout them out...see if any other customers are pricematching and go in that line...just a helpful hint i guess...lol

Very true about the cashiers - the cashier I got last BF examined every ad and price and even called the floor manager over on a few of the items. The mgr was too busy to really care, LOL. The people behind me weren't very happy. Well I have occassionally got the same cashier during the year when I have been pm'ing and she has done the same thing - the last time I pm'd she kinda made me feel uncomfortable and all I was pm'ing was the Kid's Bop CD for my kids - geez.

I will have to avoid her on BF. Not because I am trying to pull something but only because I prefer to get checked out a little faster this year.

Just an additional note about this...you have to make sure you get your price adjustment during the hours of the doorbuster sale (usually 6-11 a.m.), or they won't do the adjustment.

It's not price matching...it's price adjusting, where you take your receipt in for the things you purchased prior to the BF, that went on sale on BF and get the difference...

Target price adjustments are within 14 days (though some people on the PP thread think 7, so I don't know if that's changed recently)...I usually just shop there a few days before BF, just to make sure I'm within the window, and I go around 10 or so on BF and get my adjustment...Guest Services is usually empty that morning!

thanks stacya... my next question was "how busy is customer service usually that day?" I have to work that day starting at 7:30am so I try to hit what I want before then. Needless to say that I'm usually very limited in where I can go in a short amount of time. Last year was my best year though... I hit Staples, Home Depot and Walgreens all from 6-7... Good thing I picked the stores that weren't that busy :) Maybe I missed it but what time does Target usually open?

Make sure you take your ad with you if you try to price adjust. I had a couple of things not come up in the register that were in the ad last year. Had to go to customer service and get my money back. Don't assume the computer will have it all for you.

I'll have to remember to take the ads... now, will Target price match too. Say I buy something there a few days ahead and want to take my receipt in (and the ad) to price match. Will they do that or will they just do price adjustments on what they are having on sale?

Target will not price match other stores. They will only price adjust to their own ad. HTH

Last year our WM would not price match things that were BOGO or a percentage off.

last year Target had a mem card on sale for 7.00 for the camera and by the time I got there they had ran out what they did was substitute it with a different brand. I was totally shocked.. either they were desperate or something , I had never heard of them doing things like this. But we had to pick up the ninentdo ds box set online cause they ran out in the store of the game that came with the case.. still got it at the BF price even tho it was after the time frame .
we try to hit the military base BF first since things are not taxed. or we would go separate cars and one hit one store and another hits another store. and communicate over the cell phone.

Walmart won't price match those at all. I do alot of my grocery shopping at Walmart so I can price match other stores while only going to one place.

My WM last year wouldn't price match until after the early bird sales they said it was up to the Manager if they wanted to price match or not...needless to say I pitched a fit because the signs said they would price match not price match After a certain time...so I will be going to a different WM in my town this year

Yup! Last year, a bunch of us e-mail corporate about their price adjustment policy and then just printed the response and brought it to the store if they had a problem. I never got a response but I didn't have a problem either.

I emailed Target asking about their price adjustment policy and how it applies to Black Friday. All answers seem to indicate that you are allowed to purchase the merchandise before Black Friday and then go in w/ your receipt the day of and get your price adjustment on the sale items. I have pasted my email exchange w/ Target so you can print it out in case Target gives you any trouble :P

email? I only ask because last year I heard the Target by me was not
honoring that policy stating Black Friday was a special sale day and

thank you for that...My Target was one that tried to say that it didnt apply to BF items..this year Im taking this with me...Now if Walmart would email me back about there BF price match information

I currently work in Guest Services at Target (& have for way too many years). LOL This policy does apply even on Black Friday. You shouldn't have any problems getting it applied. If you do, don't bother arguing, just ask for the GSTL (front-end manager).

We don't have a Circuit City close here, but the only stores that I know who will price match are Sears, Best Buy, and Walmart. Walmart will not pm if an item is on sale for a percentage off. I've never tried the price adjustment for BF items.

Right - that's what I was told last year. Also, if you're unsure, call the store's manager a few days prior. I got the manager's name just in case the cashier gave me any grief, but they didn't!

They don't actually have the policy stated on their site, at least not that I saw. I had to email them about it and the response I got is what I posted on this site. :gd_devild

Sears by me was great at price matching TVs. Got a nice HD TV that Circuit City advertised, price matched at Sears. All I needed was the ad and the manager price matched no problem. She said they would price match during the door buster time that the Circuit City price was good for.

From what I remember last year Walmart corporate left BF price matching up to the local store manager. I know a few stores I went into right before BF in different states even, had HUGE signs that said we WILL be PMing on Black Friday. They do, however, honor the time of the sale (WMs prices started at 5am, so you would have to wait until 6am to check out if you wanted them to PM Target). And you don't even have to have the ad with you (although it helps) according to Walmarts PMing policy, you just have to tell them who has it on sale and for how much.

Target doesn't do doorbusters on BF, they have a 2-day sale and have for a few years now. But since they will do rainchecks on items in their flyer, I've never had it be an issue. Most of the items are stuff they carry and are not "special purchase" items.

Who definately doesn't PM other stores? Toys R Us and Target.

This was very frustrating last year. I called ahead. When I got to Wal-Mart I asked a manager. Everyone said "Yes, they were going to." When I got to the checkout- they said "no" I argued and offered a little constructive criticism that if they weren't going to then just say "no" but don't lead people to believe one thing and then change the mind. A simple note posted on the doors a couple days to a week before would have solved a lot of frustrated people. I'm sure I wasn't the only one. I did call headquarters and basically said that as a whole people understand if you don't have price match. Just let us know and be consistent nation-wide. BTW- the items had a price listed, the stores were open, and it was exact items name brand etc. Still no price match.

For those military families that shop at AAFES (BX/PX) and NEX they do price match as long as you have the advertisement. Last year I ended up getting 2 gameboy micros for $35 each and I didn't have to pay taxes either.

Last yea WM had a 80`s Trivial Pursuit and Rubics cube combo in their ad but none in the store so they let me get the game and threw in the cube. Actually got it cheaper than the ad! Pay back on them for not price matching my movie!:cool:

Be careful doing a price adjustment at walmart. Our walmart will do a price adjustment within a certain time frame (I don't remember what it is), but most of the things they have out for BF are special items with either slightly different packaging or a different model number. Last year the I-Dogs they had on the shelves were in a white box ($40) but the special BF ones ($10) they pulled out at 5am were in black boxes. I saw a lady arguing with CS about it but they were technically right, it wasn't exactly like the ones on sale. Almost everything walmart has for their doorbusters are like that. I saw many angry people who had put the I-Dogs on layaway and were wanting to get them out that day for the discounted price and were told it was a different item. What really bites is that they won't tell you the ones for BF are different. The ad had a picture of the I-Dog but not the box and when I called to ask if I could have a price adjustment on it and a manager said yes, as long as it's exactly the same which led me to believe they would be. I ended up not making it to walmart before BF so I just bought it that morning but I thought it was kinda shady how they leave out that one piece of information. One of my friends works there and said that a few days before BF they show the packaging on the doorbusters to all the employees so they know not to override the price if the packing is different. If they know the packaging is different and that you can't get a price adjustment why can't they just come out and say it, I wouldn't have been angry. I would just have to do it like everyone else. Ok, I'm done with my rant :)

better make sure that your store does that my best buy didnt but the one my sister went to did so she got all her stuff and took it back on friday to get adjusted

TRU has had a blurb on their ad for the past few years that they will not price matching on Black Friday.

In fact, I was told by my local TRU a while back that all of their stores stopped PMing.

Our TRU also has a sign up that they no longer PM. That stopped about 2 years ago if I remember correctly - bummer for sure.

Our TRU will not price match, but I did find out today that they will do price adjustments on their items for 30 days. Took a receipt and the ad in and they adjusted. I didn't ask if they will do it for Black Friday yet, but maybe!

Kohls is usually a mad house, so if I could avoid the lines to pay and just go right to the back for customer service, there probably wouldn't even be anyone there. If I remember correctly, I think last year my mom just happened to stop there for something on Wednesday near closing and they allowed her to purchase stuff that was in the BF ad for that price on Wednesday night. She's not even a black friday shopper so she was thrilled to get such a good deal.

I think it depends on the WalMart you are close to. I have never had a problem price matching with them here in Alaska.

My favorite for this year so far was the manager at Fred Meyers. He promised to PM and buy me a coffee at Starbucks if I came to his store for BF. Unfortunately, I will be in a different town for BF.:dazzler: He did want to get my business for that day.

Target only will price match THEIR own sale within 14 days of your purchase. They will not PM another store's ad. Since Target runs a 2 day sale and not a doorbuster sale - I have never had a problem buying what I needed on BF over the weekend.

Target is also really good about giving rainchecks on items that sell out. Unless they are a 'special purchase' - which they normally don't do on BF weekend.

Where is the best place to PM video games on Black Friday? I am going to Best Buy...but have never heard of them PM at all...I have a sears, Target, GameStop & F.Y.E all in my area...there is a wally world but it is about 3 blocks away.

Id say... Walmart might be the best bet. I saw Target has some of the games we want for the wii on sale. However, with walmart, I would check before hand to make sure it is the exact same game. With Wal-Mart it depends on the store manager- That is the answer that I had gotten about 3 weeks ago. Prior to this year they wouldn't make a coorporate decision and have left it to each individual stores. I was one that couldn't get PM last year even after calling the store and verifying they were going to PM. I simply told the manager that I visited with that realistically if they just posted a sign that it would save them time and frustration as well as saving the shoppers frustration and anger.

My take- after last year unless WM has something that I REALLY have to get I'm probably going to Sears or another store first. I probably will venture over to WM however it just isn't worth it after the frustration that I faced last year.

I always go to Target and get my BF items ahead of time. (As long as it's 14 days or less before BF). Then, on BF, I can walk right up to the customer service counter...usually no line there at all that day...and they price adjust to the BF price.

The best part of it all is looking at the long lines and knowing you don't have to stand in one and your stuff is already at your house. The worst part has been finding a parking space. :smirk:

All that I am wanting at Target is the video games, it is close to Best Buy but I don't know if they will all be gone by the time I get there. Our TRU will not price match, but I did find out today that they will do price adjustments on their items for 30 days. Took a receipt and the ad in and they adjusted. I didn't ask if they will do it for Black Friday yet, but maybe!

TRU does not price adjust on Black Friday.

Last year I was told by an employee that they would price adjust on BF, but when I brought in my receipt, the customer service person said that BF was excluded. I talked to (and argued with) the manager, but he wouldn't do it. I ended up price matching at other stores, and returned all the toys I bought at TRU the next day.

Does anyone know if Circuit City will price match?

The wm here will, but at the store price... in other words if it's bogo but the other store charge $4.99 for 1, then that's the price you pay. EVEN if wm's price was $3.49 to begin with.

I always go to Target and get my BF items ahead of time. (As long as it's 14 days or less before BF). Then, on BF, I can walk right up to the customer service counter...usually no line there at all that day...and they price adjust to the BF price.

The best part of it all is looking at the long lines and knowing you don't have to stand in one and your stuff is already at your house. The worst part has been finding a parking space. :smirk:

This is a great resource for all of us who actually WORK the dreaded BF in Retail. I can never get to other stores since I am working at my own! I just get a friend or family member to take my receipt into the store for the refund since I cannot go!

What about Price adjustments. If I buy something on Wed before Thanksgiving and go in on Friday/Saturday will they adjust the price and give me a refund of the difference. I've heard Target does this, just wondering if anyone has tried this at TRU. Thanks.

I was so excited when I read that Target will price adjust! I just called the Target in West Mifflin, PA and they said NO! She said they will not price adjust anything in their 2 day ad. Bummer!!!

Be careful with Walmart... they will price match but many of us found that BF items from other stores' ads mysteriously had disappeared off the shelves. This included toys, video games, electronics.... Walmart didn't want to price match anybody else's great deals. So just be cautious.

It's not exactly Price-Matching but Target will do price adjustments on BF items. I went and bought everything the day before Thanksgiving and just brought the receipt in on BF. No need to fight the crowds.

I called and talked to a manager got his name and e-mailed Target to take the letter with me just in case there is a problem but it seems like there will not be a problem with it...I am going to go on Weds night then BF morning I will do the other stores and stop back at Target on Fri afternoon...:yup:

I did this last yr. Target had a BF 19' monitor for the same price as BB's 22" I bought the one at Target before Thankgiving thinking I'd NEVER get the one at BB. I asked the lady at Cust. Ser. repeatedly if they would price adjust on BF. Yes. Even asked if she would be working!
My daughter ended up snagging the BB 22" so the same lady saw me RETURNING the monitor after I put her thru all that! :(

A lot of the Wal-Mart doorbusters aren't on the floor available to purchase until Friday. I'm not sure what items you want but the doorbusters are usually special items - not the same as the normal stock.

That's true. Or they are in pallets covered in shrink wrap to prevent access. Also, it seems that some of the identical items tend to be marked with a unique BF SKU in order to prevent this type of price matching.

I also saw an earlier post noting that WM tries to pull many of their competition's door busters in advance, that explains my bad luck :no:

So did I! Bought two gps units. $500 total. I'll get $250 back on BF.

Quick question for you all. I intend to contact my local BestBuy, which isn't so local, tomorrow about their black friday policies, but does anyone know the answer to my question: BestBuy has the deal you get 50% off all HBO seasons, that's 50% off their in-store prices. Now say what if Best Buy had a particular show listed cheaper on their website than in-store, could I get that show price matched to their wbesite's online price and then still get the 50% off.

If this is possible, then could I perhaps match another store's in-store price and then still get the 50% off?

Just thought about this idea. I want the Ben Ten Figures that will be on sale at Toys R US for $4.98. Can I buy them on Wednesday from Target and go back Friday and have the price match and adjust from my receipt or am I pushing it.

I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to have something put on layaway at K-Mart now and then bring in Target ad for their BF sale and have them price match for that product on my layaway tag? Target has the Olevia 37" TV and I wanted to be able to put it on layaway but K-Mart's price isn't as good as Targets for 37" TV. Is that going to be something they would do? I know they price adjust for their own stuff for layaway but didn't know about price matching on layaway items. Worse case I could go in on BF and bring sale ad to price match and then pay for it by putting it on layaway? Maybe?

Why don't you go buy the Olevia 37" tv at Target now and then get them to price adjust on Friday or Saturday? That's what I did. I bought the Olevia (make sure it's the 237T) for full price of $799, and opened a credit card to get an additional $80 off. Then I'm going to return to target on Friday or Saturday with my receipt to get it price adjusted. My only question is if they'll take back part of that $80 I got taken off for opening my account. If all goes well, I'll end up paying less than $500 for it (before tax of course). Not bad. I haven't even opened it so that if they give me trouble, I'll just try to return it and buy it right back at the new low price. Anyone see any flaws with this plan?

Hello, I just called my local TRU store twice, and I received different responses. The first lady told me No they do not price adjust for Black Friday specials at all and the second lady told me they would. Does anyone know the actual Corporate policy of Toys R Us's Price Adjusting? Thanks!!

I always price match at wal mart. Since they are open at midnight. I go in and grab toys, cd's, dvds and have it in my cart to check exactly at 5. Bring competitors ads. I don't price match the major items on crates because they are brought out last min. But this will get you out faster to the next store getting things like I mentioned.

Does anyone know if Joann Fabrics will do a price adjustment? For example, if I buy an item tomorrow that is a doorbuster Friday, will they adjust the price if I go during doorbuster hours to get the price adjusted?

The town near us only has Kmart, and they USED to pm. I worked there years ago and that made it nice, because I could shop in store on my breaks/lunch and get the other stores prices...
But I talked to a girl I know who works there, and she said they are NOT doing it this year! So I am not even bothering with the local Kmart.

The walmarts around us have always pm'ed, but I'll be sure to ask when I go in the morning to make sure. I've actually had more luck finding other store sale items at walmart, then at the store they are on sale at!
