since I was little we always did it on my birthday (Dec. 1).. tradition has stuck with me and even though my dh thinks I'm nuts (he has a hard time with the holidays) I still do it. Of course, I always take inventory of what I have and what I want that I still need right after Halloween.. I love that time of the year!

Normally, we put up decorations on Thanksgiving, but I think we are going to start decorating a week earlier this year. The last couple of years, we didn't feel like decorating on Thanksgiving, then we were so busy we didn't have the time to devote to it. So decorations didn't get put up at all.

We usually start the day after Thanksgiving, but this year we may start the weekend before.
We've got a LOT of stuff we use to decorate inside and outside, so it takes about a week to get it all done.

We try to have them up the first week of December. The outdoor lights we get out in October. The yard decorations go up in December though.

This year we're going to have a little more than last year though. Not having to deal with my dads passing will make the holidays a lot nicer than last year!

Bring it on!

I always used to start December 1st, but for the past couple of years DH and the girls have started putting up the tree while I am out shopping on Black Friday. I guess that is our new tradition!

We use to do it the second weekend in Dec. but last year was the first year that DH decided he was not celebrating Christmas anymore and I was in such a depressed state over the fact that I did not decorate our home. I spent Christmas Eve and Day at my moms and inlaws and they both decorated. I am not sure what to do this year. I feel so bad for DD4 because she will have no memories of her dad and Christmas like our older children do.

We start string up the outside lights a weekend or two before Thanksgiving, depending on the weather but do not turn them on until Thanksgiving weekend. Sometime in Nov my daughter will start asking to put up her Christmas tree. She has a small 2 1/2 foor tree for her bedroom. That is normally up and decorated before thanksgiving. I will start the rest of the decorating right after Thanksigiving dinner and the Saturday after. If we get back from shopping early enough on BF then we will decorate that day too.

Anytime after my DD bday. Her bday is Nov. 10th and I want her to have the house decorated for her day, not Christmas. I have a dec. bday and I used to hate getting bday things in Christmas paper, or Christmas things for my bday. So after her party on the 11th, its fair game to decorate for Christmas.

This is getting me seriously excited for Christmas!!!

We usually decorate on Thanksgiving or Black Friday. We've got a ton more stuff this year though since I hit the clearance sales last year. Actually, I don't even really remember what I bought. That's going to be exciting in itself opening up the boxes and seeing what's in there!! :D

I usually try to do it over the Thanksgiving weekend. When my oldest was younger I would wait until after his birthday (another Dec. 1 child!!) but with work schedules, the long weekend works better. We haven't decorated outside for several years as my husband is now disabled, but I long to put lights on the tree out front-- maybe oldest child and I will tackle it this year! Of course indoors is fairly easy as the Snowglobes stay out year round so the tree and if I can swing it, some greenery (we have a small house).

We use to put outdoor lights up in October but after buying over $150 in lights last year that almost all ended up ruined I'm not doing outside decorations this year. For indoor decorations, we started putting everything up the day of the Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State game. We start on stuff before the game, set down together to watch the game then finish after the game while discussing the game.

HAHAHAHA... I almost put mine up yesterday! ALMOST. I have a lovely fake tree that can go up and down at a moments notice. I'm big on themes and details so I need time to get it right, make a list of what I need to shop for to complete my decorations. Truth be told, I'll probably put it up this week since it's been on my mind ever since the stores had theirs up.

Everything has to be perfect for party time December 24th!

lucyismycat
9-19-2007, 2:29 PM
I'll be putting up the outside lights sometime in October, depending on weather. DH is NO help with that, so it takes me awhile to crawl around on the roof getting things just right.

Then the inside decorating will start either the week of Thanksgiving (if we're going somewhere else for Tday) or Thanksgiving weekend if we're having everyone to our house.

The outside lights come on late Thursday night/early Friday morning when I leave to go shopping.

November 1st. I go straight from Halloween to Christmas!! Oh I can't wait!!!

So true!!! It takes us almost a week straight to get the outside lights up and then another week to do the inside. We decorate everything inside and out that can be decorated.

9-19-2007, 3:58 PM
We put our tree up about the second week of Oct. But we put orange lights and paper pumpkins and fake maples leaves all over it and call it our harvest tree. Then right after Halloween we sit and make hand turkeys for every member of the family(there are only 4 of us so we each make 2) and we place the new turkeys as well as the ones from past years on the tree. The on black Friday we carefully undecorate and redecorate for Christmas.

I also hang a orange paper chain around my front room. and the same night we make the turkeys we make strips of paper that we write what we are thankful on and add them to the chain that was hung in Oct. I have little kids so last year it was thing like marshmallow and hot wheels. I LOVE IT!!!!

Oh and we are North Idaho so my DH does the outside lights the first weekend in Nov and then we turn them on with our own family lighting ceremony the evening of black Friday. We even make sure to put sparkles away during the 4th of July so that we have some just for that night. We turn on the Christmas lights and light sparklers----OK so we may just take this holiday thing a little to serious----NAAAAAA

I normally wait until about the 2nd weekend in December cause we get a real tree. We participate in 2 local Christmas parades which take up our first two weekends.

Every year I say I'm gonna start earlier cause I always seem to run out of time. Maybe I should start Thanksgiving weekend and just not put up the tree.

I got one of those huge blow up thingies for the yard after Christmas last year and I can't wait to put it up!

In recent years I have taken down Halloween decorations and put up Christmas decorations on November 1st. However, now that the kids are getting older, and have started complaining, I am going to TRY to wait until the weekend before Thanksgiving. I put up a lot of decorations outside, and decorate every room in the house so it takes alot of time and I want to enjoy it for awhile.LOL I am using alot of pumpkins and scarecrows this year that will go on through Halloween so hopefully that will help curb the urge to decrate early.

The last three Christmases have been very depressing for me. In 2004 my husband was in Iraq, then in 2005 my grandma died, she was like a mom to me, and my son moved out of my house just weeks before Thanksgiving last year :( He went and grew up on me... darn him! I used to decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving, but I actually decorated on Christmas eve those last three years. My husband surprised me in 2005 and came home three days before christmas and he decorated that year. I hope to decorate right after thanksgiving this year though!!!

I'm hoping to start decorating inside the weekend after Thanksgiving. Outside, I don't mind waiting a bit longer. Our December bill was one of our highest bills last year even though we only had 5 strands of lights. I splurged on 90% off day last year and stocked up on LED lights (take up less electricity) but I also bought a couple small inflatables so I think the electricity savings will balance out....

The first year we moved here, my DH was deployed and my parents came up for a visit. my WONDERFUL dad helped me do up the front of my house in lights. They look great!--I figure if the store can do it, then so can I...I have a big tree in our living room and nativity scenes, nutscracker, snowmen, and of course Santas all over the place. I have a skinny, but tall tree in my DH's bedroom and it is decorated all girly and my son has a cheap-o tree decorated...after it was decorated, it looked really good..Before kids, I started the day after Thanksgiving. Now, I know all about BF, so I reserve that day to shop. Also, I've learned that by decorating early, I can bribe/threatened the kids into behaving better between no and Christmas.

As much as I love to decorate, I just can't seem to find the time anymore. Between being a single mom, work and 2 teenagers and their activites, I barely have time to cook anymore.

I didn't even decorate for Halloween this year.

Just put out my turkey flag this morning.

I always start on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. We have done that for quite a while now, and my kids really look forward to it! My DH thinks that it is a little early, but we outnumber him!!! ;)

I put my outside lights in time for Thanksgiviving. then, as night comes, I put them on. It reminds me how the Christmas season is starting. After that, I don't put them back on til Dec. 1. My indoor decorating doesn't start till till I get the tree.

I usually put my stuff up Thansgiving weekend. I did put my light up outside last weekend. I went out and put the rest of my stuff outside today since it was in the 60`s today. Last day for nice weather for a few months. :( I have to wait to do my tree and inside decorations until next week though since I will have my cousin`s 1 year old all weekend. LOL. We will let him see(tear up) her tree first and see how he does before I do mine. LOL.

DH did all the outside decorating today before I got home from work.... looks great! It's a day early, but he has to work from tomorrow through Sunday and it was 70 degrees here today, going to be only 40 tomorrow and dropping from there over the weekend so I think it was a good idea to go ahead..... scared me though when I found out he took DGD3 up on the roof with him..... he tied a rope around her and also around the chimney, but still... she's THREE.... then again she probably wouldn't let Papaw go without her... lol

Inside I have put the tree together and all 3 DS will decorate it while I am out shopping Friday morning... well my niece is babysitting and will probably let them sleep till noon so they will do it Friday afternoon.... lol.... then I will do the rest of the house over the weekend...
