Either a 700m or a 6000. Trying to configure both of them comparably and at the $1500-1650 price range so that it drops to 750-900 with the coupon. Once I get a couple configs ready I'll decide whether I want the ultra portable, or the faster one.

I'm more concerned about keyboard and display. I absolutely detest 14.1" or 15.0" XGA or a very cramped keyboard.
Fortunately my local Dell kiosk has the 700m and 9200 on display. So I'll probably spend a good 10 minutes evaluating them.
Here are some Inspiron 700m vs 6000 vs 9300 Pictures.

Which model are you interested in?
Are size/weight very important?
What's your budget?
I may in the market to buy 5+ laptops. Wonder if I should make 5 orders. :) The deal seems smok'n hot!
RossMAN 4-12-2005, 4:15 AM If I buy a Dell laptop (still undecided) I'll probably go for:
Dell Inspiron 6000
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 730 (1.60 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
15.4 inch UltraSharp WSXGA+ LCD Panel
1Yr Ltd Warranty, 1Yr Mail-In Service, and 1Yr Technical Support (my CitiBank VISA (http://www.ncsreporting.com/LinkTrack/Redirect.asp?LinkID=CDP10724) offers FREE 1 year extended warranty)
256MB Shared DDR2 SDRAM 1 Dimm - I'll upgrade this from NewEgg or AT FS/FT

6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery (53 WHr)
$1,502 base price as configured above (excluding current promotional discounts)
-$750 off $1499 coupon

I would like the better warranty and battery but I'd also like to keep this as close to $1499 as possible.

What's your budget?
i am looking at the 6000 to get it as close as possible to $1500 to make the total under $800 before tax; size and weight aren't the biggest issue with it anyways
Did anyone ever try to resell a laptop and made any profit?
Do you think it's possible to profit about 150-200 dollars from getting the inspiron 9300 with the default configurations that they use? I'm currently a student at Stevens Tech so there might be some people who would pay for it. I'm just curious to what opinions/advice you guys may have.

I'm also looking at the same model with the exact same approach, great minds think alike.
I would definitely recommend upgrading to the
15.4 inch UltraSharp WSXGA+ LCD Panel
Assuming the base price remains the same (excluding current promotions) I configured a nicely loaded Dell Inspiron 6000 for $1,522. This includes the higher resolution WSXGA+ LCD display, 256MB RAM, combo CD/DVD, 60GB, built in wireless internet card and longer life battery that lasts around 5 hours.

Yes it's possible but you're competing against thousands of other Hot Dealers with that same mentallity. Make sure to do your homework first by searching for completed eBay auctions for Dell Inspiron 700m and 9300 models. Look for which configurations usually sell the highest. Warranty may be a big concern to eBay buyers, so keep that in mind.
Do any of the Dell laptops have built-in bluetooth?
Edit:
Nevermind, I see it's an option in the 6000. I was hoping for something like the 700m size, so it could be used in the car as a GPS. I guess I'll stick with the Axim for that.

RossMAN 4-12-2005, 11:39 AM I would definitely recommend upgrading to the

why do you recommend it?
Because it's the perfect resolution (http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=61323) (for most people).
This is a very important decision that you want to get right the first time, otherwise you may have to return the laptop or sell it. A coupon like this is very rare and you don't want to miss this opportunity. It would be a good idea to visit your local CompUSA or Best Buy store today and go to the laptop section. There should be a few laptops with WXGA (1280x800) and the better WSXGA (1680x1050) resolution. Compare them and see which is easier on your eyes. Open several different applications including Internet Explorer. If your vision isn't that great or you prefer larger text/icons then the standard WXGA would be a better choice and you can use that $125 elsewhere (like a 2nd battery?).
When I was shopping around for my first laptop I did the same thing. CompUSA had the best selection of laptops. I was really glad that I did a personal side-by-side comparison of the XGA vs SXGA models. You want to be happy with your purchase instead of always thinking "I wish I had upgraded ... when I had the chance". Regret sucks!
Remember the Dell coupon begins in less than 24 hours and this has already been posted on thousands of web sites and forums. There is a good possibility it will end soon tomorrow morning.

I think I have my "perfect configuration" at $1,522 with everything I want. Since the coupon is set to expire after 10,000 uses that will not take long. I will be ordering at 8AM CST tomorrow morning before it expires.

That's a tough decision as they are two very different laptops.
RossMAN 4-12-2005, 2:38 PM Ok now I'm considering flip flopping and getting the 700m, I'll have to check the Dell kiosk again tonight.
i-bystander 4-12-2005, 3:17 PM That's a tough decision as they are two very different laptops.
What are the main differences? Do they both come in at right around the same price after the coupon?
The main difference is the overall size. Yes, both are very similar in price. It depends if you would rather have a bigger screen in exchange for a heavier, bigger laptop. The screen on the 700m is as close to perfect as I've seen. Widescreen 1280x800 resolution, which is as good as you can get for a laptop this small without making things too small and unreadable.
Pliablemoose 4-12-2005, 3:41 PM <-hugs his 700m
It's perfect, small, fast (I put a gig of ram in it), great battery life with the 8 cell battery:)
The 700m's have held their value very well. The exact same configuration I paid just under $800 for in October during the last big sales would only be around $90 cheaper tomorrow. Not bad for 6 months depreciation.

What is your personal opinion on the LCD and cramped keyboard?
Pliablemoose 4-12-2005, 4:38 PM What is your personal opinion on the LCD and cramped keyboard?
The LCD is amazing, I couldn't believe how good it looked when I fired it up the first time. Dell pushes it as a Media Notebook and it makes a great DVD player too.
I'm not a super fast typist, so I hunt & peck on any keyboard, but I don't have any specific complaints about the smaller keyboards.
I love the ultra compact notebooks, and after being very frustrated tyring to used a WiFi PDA (multiple brands models) I've resigned myself to a compact notebook, and am just happy that it has a keyboard at all:)
I may upgrade my daughter's notebook with this deal, still considering it...
She has an HP that's pretty big & slow...
The LCD on the 700m really has to be seen in person (and have the right settings, unlike the one Ross saw at the Dell kiosk). It's very sharp and bright and has the perfect native resolution for that size screen.

You can remove the optical drive on the 700m just by sliding one of the switches underneath and it just pulls right out. As long as you get a replacement that is compatible, it'll take you 5 seconds.

Here is a Laptop DVD Burner for $109.99 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-028&depa=0) from NewEgg.com
I'm not sure if it's compatible or not. If you get Dell's it's only $20 more, pre-installed for you and is covered under warranty.

Intel Pentium M 730 (1.60ghz)
Windows XP Home

My question to you guys is, would it be better to keep it at 256mb and subtract $50 or just stick with the 512mb at that price? I'm looking to purchase 4 of these tomorrow morning for business purposes.

IIRC Dell charges +$50 to upgrade from 256MB to 512MB, right?
The RAM is very easy to upgrade, I would keep the default 256MB and upgrade yourself adding another 512MB for $63.71 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-155-124&depa=0). That's what I plan on doing.
512 = $50 additional cost
768 = $64 additional cost
:greenappl
The thing with Dell's $50 upgrade is that they give you 2 256MB sticks, so both of your slots are used up. As Ross said, it's much better to just take the one stick of 256MB they give you and then put a stick of 512MB in the other slot. Or just buy 2 sticks of 512MB and sell the extra 256MB stick that came pre-installed.
RossMAN 4-12-2005, 6:39 PM Or just buy 2 sticks of 512MB and sell the extra 256MB stick that came pre-installed.
Hmmn 1GB RAM (512x2) for $128, it's probably overkill for FireFox but think of the bragging rights :gd_shake:

Very rarely you may encounter an incompatible bezel configuration on the new drive, but that is machine model specific.

I'm not sure about the 700m, but if you get the 6000 you want to have equal sticks in both. That is because the chipset supports dual channel memory and in order for that to work identical sticks have to be in both slots. Dell actually charges more for one 512mb stick versus 2x256, but the latter will perform better.

Thank you! This gives me more incentive to order 256MB or I could order 512x2.
I have no idea how Dell's system works. If they don't take it online, I'd try calling them up and seeing if you can order by phone. Or if you know someone, have someone in the US order for you and handle it that way.
Because of the high amount of anticipation for this coupon, barring the server going down, today is going to be the busiest day on GottaDeal since the weekend after Black Friday.
We'd like to welcome all the lurkers who are here for the Dell coupon, and we'd like to invite you to register (http://forums.gottadeal.com/register.php) for the forum and join us when you have the time. Also be sure to check out the main site (http://www.gottadeal.com) for more deals 365 days a year.

I'm never sure what I should tell an average computer user about warranties. I'm afraid that if they do what I do and just take whatever comes free that they may end up needing the longer warranties!
In my experience warranties from companies like Dell haven't really helped at all!
What do you guys tell?
Alright, I called Bangalore, India (Dell Support) and they said that I can use my US address to enter in the credit card so I can at least get an order number. After that, the order may get held for credit card verification so then I'm to call them back with the # to straighten the card info out.

RossMAN 4-12-2005, 8:05 PM How fast is this deal expected to go?
Very fast because there has been ample notification and thousands of people will be ready to order tomorrow morning.
This is a contender to become "deal of the year" yes it's THAT HOT!
DaveSimmons 4-12-2005, 8:06 PM The 14.1" 1024x768 on the _Latitude_ D600's we've bought for a couple of people at work are sharp and bright, much nicer than the last couple of 15" Toshiba screens I've worked with. The keyboard is decent too though not up to the level of my old Thinkpad 240.
But Ross is right -- you should go look in person if you can. I'm Millhouse nearsighted so a 15" with resolution above 1024x768 has me squinting.
Hmm, I wonder what kind of light gaming laptop I could get for $1,500-1,600 before coupon? (Heads off to dell.com . . . )
How fast is this deal expected to go?
There is really no way to tell. Last time they had it, it went live at 6am, and by 3pm they began ending it for certain models, and by the end of the day, it was dead. They've had 2 days now of hype and promotion, so I'd suggest you order in the first 2 hours if possible.

Since I sold my Toshiba laptop last year, I've been aching for a replacement. Personally, I am a bigger fan of Toshiba and IBM but good luck getting any "deals" on those, particularly the former. I didn't want to buy into the whole mass-market Dell notebooks but this can't be passed up.
Configuring a 700m right now. I am not sure if I am going to be comfortable with the keyboard. I can handle a small screen no problem, but keyboards annoy me to no avail. Also, remember that each time you buy something like a notebook or camera, you can expect to spend a few $100 more on a nice padded case, accessories, extra batteries, cables, adapters, etc.
Too bad the coupon minimum is $1499. I actually have to work hard throwing stuff on that I don't really care about (ie warranty, extra speed, etc) just to get it up to $1499.
How is everyone configuring their notebooks (700m or otherwise)?
If one were to order a laptop from our link, how much would GD make in referrals? :gd_dollar
Dell is on the lower end as far as commission amounts, at least for us (bigger sites get slighly higher rates). There is a base percentage (1%) but we get a higher percentage if our monthly sales totals are above certain amounts, and with this sale, that should happen :) Is that vague enough? :tongue1:

Which lappy did you decide on Ross? I'm getting two 700m's. One for me and the other I can probably find someone who can use it.
DeviousTrap 4-12-2005, 10:25 PM This is too hard :(
I can't decide whether the 700m or the 6000 is for me. Both fit the budget and have good enough specs, but I have no way of knowing if the 12" is too small or not. No dell kiosks here for me to take a look at one at.
Buy both, get them, decide and sell the other one for a little profit, lowering your price on the one you keep :)

I could, but opened laptops don't exactly sell well. I think I'll probably settle on the 700m, and just get used to it if it's too small.
cthulhu 4-12-2005, 10:35 PM So, what will be the trick to getting your order in tomorrow am? Configuring your pc and putting it into your cart at 7:58am and then hitting check out at 8:00am when the coupon goes into effect? :)
I'm tempted to go with the 6000 but I'll probably go for the 700m just for the portability.
I'm off to bed, goodnight all.
I don't think you'll have to order exactly at 8:00. If anything, their servers are going to be very slow right when it goes live, so you might want to wait 5-10 minutes. But if you want to be sure, yes you can put it in your cart before 8 and then wait for them to accept the coupon.
I could, but opened laptops don't exactly sell well. I think I'll probably settle on the 700m, and just get used to it if it's too small.
I think that as long as the 700m isn't the primary PC you use, it's a perfect choice. I wouldn't want to use mine as my main machine for reasons mentioned (small keyboard, small screen size), but as a laptop it's an excellent machine.

That should dictate much of the choice with regard to display size.
RossMAN 4-12-2005, 11:58 PM Pablo - I'm getting the 6000 loaded for $1522 - $750 = :)
cthulhu - As Brad said the first 5-10 the Dell servers should be slower than usual. I will probably order around 8:30 AM CST after the initial stampede is gone.
I'm curious to see if the prices will change after 8:00 AM? We'll wait and see, less than 12 hours away.
sygyzy 4-13-2005, 12:31 AM Looks like Dell removed the 128MB Radeon graphic card choice on the 6000. They also made it very unconfigurable. Very strange.
Edit: I was wrong apparently. If you configure the second from right one, then it works out fine.
RossMAN 4-13-2005, 1:11 AM David,
Any idea how the 128 Radeon affects battery life?
Are you going to upgrade to the better battery?
well, i'll see you guys in 7 hours. :)
David,
Any idea how the 128 Radeon affects battery life?
Are you going to upgrade to the better battery?
One of the only reasons I am going towards the 6000 rather than the 700m is the better graphics. If I got the low end 6000 with integrated graphics, I might as well just get the 700m. I really doubt the Radeon 128MB is going to have any noticeable difference in battery life over the 64MB. The Radeon will probably suck more juice than the integrated graphics, but we already knew that.
Right now my configuration does not have an upgrade to the better battery. I thought there was only a battery life issue with the 700m where it was a must get item. What is the life on the standard battery for the 6000?
1.6Ghz
Windows XP Pro
15.4" WXGA+
256MB DDR2
8x CD/DVD Burner Combo
6 Cell Standard Battery
128MB Radeon
Bluetooth Internal
$1500.00 exactly.
Thoughts?
RossMAN 4-13-2005, 2:10 AM Upgrade to the better battery, I know it won't be a perfect $1500 but it will be worth it.
How much is the internal bluetooth and what page is that on?
Bluetooth is on the very first page, near the bottom. Let me check the price with the battery upgrade.
Edit: $99 more for the better battery. Now it's $1599! Jesus! How can I bring this bad boy down?
RossMAN 4-13-2005, 2:55 AM Edit: $99 more for the better battery. Now it's $1599! Jesus! How can I bring this bad boy down?
Read this review (http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=67560) and you'll be glad you got the better battery :greenappl
Looks like the x300 is a very subpar graphics card. Better than integrated but everyone hates it on NotebookReviews. Maybe I will get the 64MB version instead. Is that what you are doing Ross?
P.S. Will check out your review.
RossMAN 4-13-2005, 3:38 AM Here is what I plan on buying:
Dell Inspiron 6000 (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=RjWYtCqO0*M&offerid=85614.10000369&type=3&subid=0)
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 730 (1.60 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home
15.4 inch UltraSharp WSXGA+ LCD Panel
1Yr Ltd Warranty, 1Yr Mail-In Service, and 1Yr Technical Support
256MB Shared DDR2 SDRAM 1 Dimm (NewEgg.com is cheaper (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-211-109&depa=0))
60GB Hard Drive
24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery (80 WHr) - nearly 6 hours of battery power!
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps) Centrino Mobile Technology
I would like a longer warranty with at home service however I'm going for overall value.
Fortunately my CitiBank VISA (http://www.ncsreporting.com/LinkTrack/Redirect.asp?LinkID=CDP10724) offers FREE 1 year extended warranty (http://usa.visa.com/personal/cards/benefits/bft_warranty_mgr.html?it=search).
I wonder if Bluetooth for an extra $49 is worth it?
If you are also considering the Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop here are two must read reviews

Bluetooth is worth it for me. If I get a bluetooth phone then that's wireless internet. And guess what? Alot of the GPS's out there are bluetooth. That means you have a GPS system for your car. Though for me that's a mooth point since my TSX has navigation built in *brag*.
I'm having a tough time choosing between a 600m, 700m and 6000.
I want each to have the same things with 512 mb ram, 60 gb HD, extra battery, etc, but there are a few slight differences in each of my plans
600m (looks a bit out of date) - 1.8 ghz, no extra battery (option not avaliable)
700m - 1.6 ghz
6000 - 1.6 ghz, 64mb radeon
The plans i have for the 600m and the 6000 both cost 1,550 while the 700m is just at 1,501
5 hours to go.. gonna sleep on it and hope something comes to me in a my sleep
RossMAN 4-13-2005, 4:30 AM Ness,
These are all actually newer laptops.
700m replaces the aging 600m
6000 replaces the popular widescreen 8600
9300 replaces the desktop replacement 9200
You should base your decision on laptop size/weight. If it isn't that important to you, you just want a great deal on a solid laptop then get the 6000. If you want something portable get the 700m. If you are looking for a desktop replacement get the 9300 with beautiful 17" LCD.
Why would a student buy a 9300 to carry around with them? They wouldn't as it weighs nearly 10 pounds and isn't as easy to carry around as the 700m.
Why would a power user get a 700m? They wouldn't because it's meant for portability, therefore the keyboard and LCD display are smaller.
Here are some good summaries of the 3 models from another forum:
6000 = Great, middle-ground, all-around laptop.
700M = For people who want something small.
9300 = For people who want a huge-screen.
Laptops are always a balance between weight and power/usability.
I think the top choice this time around is the 6000 (with Pentium M and dedicated graphics).
The 9300 is good too, but a little more costly, and heavier (but you do get a 17" screen).
If you really need the portability, the 700m is where it's at.
Ask yourself how important laptop size and weight are? Base your decision off of that.
Yeah, I'd recommend the bluetooth.... though in theory you could add an internal bluetooth card later on. Don't take my word on it because I haven't looked into it. $50 seems a tad steep for the option, though.
God, do I wish I had some cash to spare. A laptop would be sweet while I'm out of town here.

I don't know. I think portability is my main desire. I'm still leaning towards the 700m.
I for one am getting the 700m for the wife. She wants something small and portable, and since the only game she plays is Snood, I think it will suit her just fine. I'm just deciding whether I should spend ~$120 on the 2 year warranty or the DVD burner.
I just created a new thread were you can brag about the specific deal you got after you have placed your order:

Feel free to post specs, price, etc... Also discuss any essential laptop accessories that you want or would recommend to others.

Yes they should have, but considering they only do a deal like this 1-2 times a year, they probably figured "why bother?" They'll eventually get all the orders they want. But they should have added extra capacity. They make servers - it's not that difficult, lol.

That's strange. They said they would e-mail us when they were down to the last 500-1000 uses. Haven't heard from them at all this morning. I'll keep you updated. They may have temporarily suspended it until the fix the servers.

I just pray that Dell is pulling the coupon for just a small short time while they figure everything out. I really need to order ATLEAST 2, but would like 3 more. :(
I was shooting for 4 or 5 and got 2. If I didn't misplace my debit card I probably would have gotten another 1 or 2. Did you have any shipping and handling charges?
i know mine did not receive free shipping although it was showing up when it was in my cart
The first one I submitted did not get free shipping for some reason (the 700m)
Nope I don't believe so. On one of my orders, it said there was TAX and SHIPPING, so I re-did it and came up with free shipping and no tax. I dont know what that was all about, but that took up one order "time".
I'm sure you'll be able to get the shipping charges removed later by giving Dell a call. If some had free shipping, then they all were most likely supposed to have it.
Bollweevilx 4-13-2005, 10:27 AM i know my shipping cost didnt show up until my confirmation email; if other people are having the same issues with their shipping let me know

But that's what happens when they were given 2 days of promotion.
And once again, until the next $750 off comes along (probably in October again), all Dell laptop deals will seem cold in comparison.

That's pretty much what happens. Nearly every time a laptop coupon was released ($600 off $1499, $750 off $1999, etc...) you would read comments on the various sites about how it wasn't as hot as the "holy grail" $750 off $1499 coupon. I knew that would happen in October, and I'm guessing it'll happen this time as well.
The only thing to watch for is one of those $500 or $600 off $1499 coupons when Dell is having free upgrades or mail-in rebates.
For example, when I got my 700m in October, it wasn't during the $750 coupon. A week before that they had $500 off $1499, but they also had $200 mail-in rebates and free upgrades (combo drive and 512MB RAM) so it ended up being basically the same deal.
RossMAN 4-13-2005, 11:09 AM dell should have kept this deal a secret until this morning. they still would have sold the 10,000, but the servers would have held up most likely.

Wassup with the shipping charges, anyone managed to get theirs to ship free? I called but it's busy now, gonna try later.
I managed to get this:
Though I think there was some confusion on the slashed prices and the real price because some of the configurations I've seen people post went way past the actual $1500 mark
Unit Price: $1,546.00
Ended up at $918.03 with tax and shipping

Big Smooth 4-13-2005, 7:38 PM As much as I feel for those who missed out, I am personally thankful this deal ended so quickly. Made the decision not to get something I did not truly want or need (but could hardly pass up at the price) all that much easier.
Amen! Helluva deal if you actually needed a lappy though. :2cloud9:
Bollweevilx 4-14-2005, 10:34 AM Wassup with the shipping charges, anyone managed to get theirs to ship free? I called but it's busy now, gonna try later.
im not sure what happened with the free shipping or whatnot; i added a travel bag as well and that shows no shipping charges but the computer does when originally it was the reverse
512 = $50 additional cost
768 = $64 additional cost
:greenappl
I am planning on upgrading the RAM on the 700m that has been shipped. It is showing DDR SDRAM - 333mhz. Is the kingmax RAM that is listed in the quote the RAM I need? 200pin?
