View Full Version : wal-mart won't take internet coupons
allen6192 3-9-2007, 11:31 AM Does anyone else have trouble getting Wal-Mart to accept internet coupons? I went the other day and the cashier took the coupons that Hostess had e-mailed me. The next night I went back and bought the same item using the identical coupons and the cashier wouldn't take them. He said it was against store policy and I should not have been allowed to use them before. I asked why and he said because I could doctor the coupon.
mrscrafty 3-9-2007, 11:38 AM None of the stores in my town will accept them. Including Walmart. It's too bad that a few bad apples had to ruin it for the rest of us.
Rockfordmom 3-9-2007, 12:04 PM Walmart doesn't like taking coupons at all in my opinion and will find any reason not to let you use one. They will only take internet coupons that scan, if it doesn't scan they will not take it even when it is a real coupon. If they scanned the week before they should have taken them, ask for the manager next time.
Shortness 3-9-2007, 1:16 PM I never even try at Wal Mart because I've heard the same thing lots. So far, I've been lucky with prinouts at Fred Meyer, Safeway and Roths. Fred Meyer looked at it weird, but my printer was running out of color ink and it did look funny--however it scanned.
Mine does all the time. In fact the cashier asked me where she could get them. I told her the best place was gottadeal.com
There are very few store that will take interent coupons in my area. Wal-Mart will not take them if they don't scan real or not.
My walmart won't take them. I've had numerous cashier's tell me that they are all fakes...I explain that I get them direct from the manufacturer's websites and they say they are still fakes. I finally quit arguing with them and I just don't take them there anymore. There is one walmart by us that has a Self Scan. I've used my internet coupons in those lanes without problem as long as they scan. So, if your wally world has a self checkout lane you might get away with using them there.

kimmieannmc 3-9-2007, 10:29 PM I didn't have any trouble using the internet coupons at walmart and I used some at target without any problems. I don't use colored ink either. However, my sister had a walmart csm decline a coupon and she wrote to the main headquarters and she received an apology and gift card for the embarrassment. Maybe more need to complain to the headquarters.
Rockfordmom 3-9-2007, 10:45 PM I've never had any problems with internet coupons at Walgreens, CVS or Target.

I was going to advise the same thing.

I sent a letter to my store complaining and never even got any response, maybe I should have sent it to the headquarters.
I used the Hostess coupon today at my Walmart. It wouldn't scan at first...it had 2 barcodes on it so she folded it so only 1 bar code showed and it scanned just fine.
anjilynn 3-10-2007, 5:25 AM The Wal-Mart I work at trains cashiers that any printed coupons are not to be accepted as they have lost too much on them in the past due to fraud.
I understand the reasoning ,but it stinks since I can't use my 10% discount AND printed coupons so I shop at Target, Walgreens (they always have to get manager approval, tho) and CVS
Starr_n_Kitty 3-10-2007, 8:22 AM I hate to even use manufacturer coupons at my walmart...They seem to confuse to the employees...argh!
landdaisy 3-10-2007, 9:33 AM I think Wal-mart is the worst at coupons! Our Wal-marts do take internet coupons but some of the cashiers don't want to. The last time I was in there, I had them call the manager to take my coupons. He said they take them if they scan but the crazy cashier didn't want to take them at all! I told her I wouldn't buy some of the stuff if they won't take the coupon, it wouldn't be worth it! Target is WAY better at taking them, I'd just take them over there if there was one close by. UGH....all I want to do is save some $$$!!!
badboy1072 3-10-2007, 12:53 PM my walmart takes internet coupons no problem along with target, kmart, hyvee, jewles
corenasmommy 3-10-2007, 1:50 PM I have never had a problem using printed coupons at wal-mart but I guess it is because my mom works there and I know most of the cashiers
jdflores 3-10-2007, 3:42 PM My Walmarts used to take them without any problems. Then they took them as long as they weren't for a free item. And now they won't take them at all. Another reason I do my best to stay out of Walmart.
jbdinos 3-10-2007, 4:15 PM I didn't have any trouble using the internet coupons at walmart and I used some at target without any problems. I don't use colored ink either. As my sister said, I went to the walmart website and sent an email to the corporate office and the next day I got an apology call from the store manager, a 20 dollar gift card, and he said not only would he accept my coupon but that he would see to it his registers were fixed to accept all coupons.
Well, I didn't have him accept the coupon simply because it was the BOGO glade light show. And after all that hassle I found them at Walgreens with a 3.00 MIR too. So it was better to use it elsewhere. But I did get the gift card and the apology. I just returned from Walmart and used several coupons from last Sunday's paper. I had a few internet coupons in there as well and two of the Sunday paper coupons were the BOGO wrigley's big pack of gum. They are 78 cents at our walmart and the coupons said free up to $1.00.... the registers are "fixed"! Now they ring up at 1.00 off instead of getting the cashier to manually enter the 78 cents.... Would have been cheaper for the store to just take them the way they were.... who knows! But I am happy my walmart is "fixed" at least for now!
bellastarr 3-10-2007, 9:28 PM My Walmart wont take any internet coupons. Kroger will take them up to 1.00, and Target is the best, they take all coupons!
vbamother 3-10-2007, 9:47 PM Our Walmart is now accepting internet coupons. This is after my friend contacted their corporate office to complain that they wouldn't accpet the coupons the Boxtops for Education site was offering. She got two phone calls...one was from the local manager apologizing, not sure if the other was from a CSM, or corporate. Anyway, the result is that we are now able to use internet coupons. I would definitely recommend using this tactic... writing the store itself is not going to be enough. They need to get a call from higher up for you to get some results.
soonernstlouis 3-11-2007, 10:15 PM I had a bad situation at Wally a couple of weeks ago with a regular coupon. We spent about $190 that trip (a lot for us) & only used about 7-8 coupons. Well, one wouldn't scan. The cashier said "are you sure you bought the right item (amount, size, product)?" I said yes. They had to get a manager over to dig through my numerous bags for a buck coupon. I kept telling them to just run a tape from the register, they said it would be easier to look through the bags. We had to get a separate cart just to help the search of all the bags. 10 minutes later we found the product & got the buck off. No apology of course.

Has happened to me several times at Wallyworld. And the whole time don't you feel like everybody in line behind you is staring at you?

This is the type of incident that needs to be reported to the corporate office. Use your receipt to get all the info you can, register #, cashier name, time of purchase, etc. Go to www.walmart.com and find the contact area for the corporate office and write to them. You will probably get a phone call from the store manager, an apology and a gift card. Even employees said that they have no choice and told me that if you call or write to corporate is the only way anything gets corrected in the stores.
Sunshyne 3-12-2007, 11:52 AM Walmart doesn't take them here, neither do Giant or Weis (the major grocery stores). I don't even bother printing them anymore.
migirlfriday 3-12-2007, 12:31 PM I have had trouble at both of the Walmarts that I visit. Both with printed coupons and coupons that are for free stuff. The last free coupon I had that was not printed off the internet, the cashier had the manager come over to approve it. Some days I do wonder if it is even worth bringing a coupon into Walmart.
vbamother 3-12-2007, 1:23 PM I'm telling y'all, you need to contact coporate...just a quick email will do the trick!

i have so much trouble with everything coupon related at walmart. they won't take internet coupons wether it is from a mfr site or other. half of them make me use a separate transaction for two of the same coupon even if i have two of the item (i.e. two formula cans with coupons sent from the mfr). and don't even think about trying to use a coupon that would expire that day anywhere close to midnight.
if they all have the same rules, i would have nothing to complain about. but for example, with the formula, they made me so angry that i left my cart and went ot another one where i had no issue.
as far as online coupons go, some sites have it set up so that you can only print X number of coupons from your computer. if they were all set up that way (or all had some sort of regulation) then maybe there woudl be less trouble using them.
Rockfordmom 3-13-2007, 7:54 PM Usually you can only print 2 of a coupon, the trouble isn't too many being used, it's coupons that are fraudently being used for products that they aren't for or that say they are for a purchase of 2 and someone only buys 1 or because some people make fake coupons and try to use them.
Dianatlol 3-16-2007, 10:04 AM Never a problem at mine, course now that I said something it maybe a problem! LOL
shawna629 3-16-2007, 2:11 PM My Walmart takes them, no problem! I even use expired Target coupons there too!
Princessarky 3-20-2007, 9:40 AM mine takes them now but didn't for a while but if they wont scan they wont key them in like some of the targets do.......of course my target wont even do that lol
kieransmummy 3-20-2007, 11:09 AM Mine won't take them, I also shop at Giant they won't take them either.
hopeky94 3-21-2007, 3:53 PM Below is info I found on another message board that I emailed to a coworker that was having the same problems. If I ever have problems with any Wal-Mart here, I fully intend to print their OWN policy off and take it to the service desk/CSM/anyone who'll listen that can do anything about it! :tongue1:
-------------------------
Here's the link to Wal-Mart's coupon policy… and the walmartfacts.com website is linked on the walmart.com website, as it is an official Wal-Mart website too! :)
http://www.walmartfacts.com/search/default.aspx?srchtxt=coupon
And the below info came from a Q&A post on the same couponing message board where I found the link above:
Q. Does WalMart accept internet printables?
A. (Source was an email sent to me by a friend long time ago... this was WalMart's email back to her)
Quote:
Wal-Mart Stores can accept coupons that are available on the internet for customers to print from their home computers. The following are guidelines for the stores for accepting internet coupons:
- The coupon should be legible and say "Manufacturer Coupon". There should be a valid remit address for the manufacturer, to ensure the coupon can be processed for payment.
- The coupon should have a scan-able bar code.
- The coupon should have an expiration date.
- The coupon cannot be a photocopy.
- The limit is one coupon per item, per Customer.
- A Salaried Manager can refuse to accept a coupon if it does not meet any or all of these guidelines.
Q. Coupons that start with the number 9..why do they beep?
A. The answer is not clear WHY they beep, but I can tell you that WalMart's registers are programmed to beep and not accept coupons that start with a 9 (9 being the first number in the barcode on a coupon... this usually has to do with doubling, so don't ask me why they beep at Walmart!) So watch your blinkies and other coupons for the dreaded "9s". The cashiers CAN override, but they are hesitant to do so... be prepared for a fight.
Q. What should I bring with me besides my money and my coupons?
A. Here are some things you MAY want to consider bringing along if your Walmart is one that tends to give you hassles over coupons.
1. Your cell phone pre-programmed with corp. number.
2. The name of your store manager so that you can throw it around when you tell the cashier that "Scott So-And-So" the store manager said yes... you can override the coupon
3. Examples of coupons that say "One per purchase", "One per transaction or store visit" and "One per customer". This may be helpful when they think you can only use one coupon because it says one per purchase.
4. A prepared schpeil on what 'Do Not Double' means...because some cashier think double coupons means using more than one coupon per transaction.
5. Comfy shoes... you may be waiting awhile.
6. Your patience... you may need it!
Rockfordmom 3-21-2007, 7:14 PM I have had the store manager at Wallyworld here refuse printed coupons. The store policy here is if it scans they will take it, if it doesn't scan (and it doesn't matter that it is a real coupon from a manufacturers website) they will not take it. Period. They have been getting better and I don't have as many coupons that won't scan as I used to. I think that companies have policies but store managers can make rules for their stores also.
:)The Highlander/Kroger here wasn't taking internet coupons in the past but I asked and I tried one today and the cashier said that she takes them all the time and no one has ever said anything to her about it:)
My Walmart takes coupons also!!
natthas 3-22-2007, 10:03 PM My local Wal-Mart takes internet coupons. I never have any problem with Wal-Mart. However, Shopper Food won't take them. They are so mean. I didn't know that they won't take them. When the lady came to told me that they won't accept internet coupon. She was about to split on my face.
smugley 3-22-2007, 10:32 PM Springhill wal-mart does not take internet coupons either.:(
lillybee 3-31-2007, 6:27 PM Walmart here does't take them either, I had 10.00 worth of coupons some free items and they said I could nott use them, so I made them to rering my purhase and keep the items that I had internet coupons on. I was told they wouldn't accept them because people can make coupons on anything. Fred's doesn't take them either.
Anita13 4-1-2007, 10:49 AM Walmart here does't take them either, I had 10.00 worth of coupons some free items and they said I could nott use them, so I made them to rering my purhase and keep the items that I had internet coupons on. next time take a copy of the above policy with you
I had a similar problem with Walmart..I truly think the stores are being told not to accept them unless someone pitches a fit about it..
Which I had to do..I tried to use a manufactor coupon for alavert worth 6 dollars..
The cashiers said "we don't take internet coupons!" I said "yes you do, according to your website official policy"..she calls a manager who also informs me that they no longer accept them..I said "fine I will write an email to Walmart"..
I received a call the next day from the asst manager stating they were sorry they do accept them but were having problems with store coupons from stores like Spartan, CVS, Kroger..I take it to be store brands, I am not sure.
No offer of a gift card for my holding up a line..aggravation with dealing with people who clearly are being told one thing..nothing..
Only assurance was if it happens again go to the customer service and talk with the manager..well really.. I must waste more time fixing a apparent problem with the store?? And I am to assume they won't change the policy unless someone pitches a fit..
I think I will pass on internet coupons and when manufactors post online coupons write asking for a "real" coupon..I hope the manufactors become aware that most big box stores don't want to handle the internet coupons..
Rockfordmom 4-1-2007, 1:33 PM When I have a coupon refused I email the company telling them what happened & ask if they offer coupons by mail because some stores won't accept them; some will send you the coupon, some will send you different coupons, and some will tell you that the coupon is only available online and will send you nothing. Maybe if they get enough complaints more and more will offer coupons by mail.
tina06098 4-6-2007, 9:15 AM Use the self check out and it will take any coupon
geomacey 4-21-2007, 6:59 AM Our Wal-mart is now refusing to take the blinky coupons too .... they actually told me that they are only intended for THAT store and if I remove them, I could be charged with theft??? I showed her where there is NO store listed and that Giant and Weis and Bi-Lo all had the same coupons .... should have just saved my breath.
I just had her remove all of the non-accepted coupons from my order. She liked THAT even less! :)
I rarely go there now.....
allen6192 4-21-2007, 4:32 PM Here is the e-mail I finally received from customer service:

I received a phone call from my local store. The manager stated that she would have a training session telling the cashiers that they DO accept internet coupons. No gift card though.
omg, hope my walmart never stops taking them, that's where I do the majority of my shopping!!!
Pauline_777 5-14-2007, 11:59 PM No problem with my Walmart--in fact, they don't even read the coupons. As long as it's the same brand, they'll take it: Stouffers, Scott, whatever.
shawna629 5-15-2007, 5:24 PM I can't complain ... my Walmart takes all coupons, even Target coupons. I am so lucky!
craftiechick 5-16-2007, 1:59 PM 2 of our walmarts have huge signs near every register stating that they do not accept internet printed coupons at this time. "If there is an issue, please contact customer relations reguarding this complaint."
Locally we have had many cases of fraud and whatnot lately so I think that is why ours doesn't take them. The sign however does say "at this time" so hopefully they will in the future.
getwell 5-23-2007, 11:48 PM I don't know any place around here that will take internet coupons.

Same thing happened here. My friend tried to use the computer generated Box Tops For Education coupons at our Walmart and they wouldn't take them, so she emailed the coporate office. She got two calls from Walmart saying they would immediately do a employee training program on it. Now they take internet coupons with no problem.
Walmart doesn't like taking coupons at all in my opinion and will find any reason not to let you use one. They will only take internet coupons that scan, if it doesn't scan they will not take it even when it is a real coupon. If they scanned the week before they should have taken them, ask for the manager next time.
I think the reason they may not take all your coupons is, if the first number in the coupon code is 9 It won't scan.
abailey82 7-3-2007, 12:56 AM Im so thankful for this information! Its time to print the policy for them!
threadless 7-10-2007, 12:24 AM Mine took them, no problem with the scotch brite toilet wand coupon.
