This has been posted many times on other forums, but I don't think it has here

With 400k, I would spend it like so:
25-50k: Iraqi currency
10k: My own business
30k-50k: A used Acura NSX

After that, I would pay off parents' home and anything left over would go for college payments for my brother and I.

Im confused, you would buy Iraqi currency b/c why? With 400k, I would put it into some low risk mutual funds/savings and add to it until I had enough to buy a nice house.

400k really isnt that much money

Esp since an average-nice home just about anywhere would be about $200k

So I'd buy a house, pay my bills off and buy a new car, and it would be toast..... lol

I wish the avg nice home around here was 200K. A home in my town (gets much more expensive as you head closer to Boston) 3 bed 1 1/2 bath 1/2 acre of land at least $425K. A small older home on the next street from me is for sale at $435K. An Acre of land here is $250-$300K...I know we get lubed around here. LOL

The economy is going to grow, look at all the work that is being done over there.

I'm actually right now trying to find how to invest in the iraqi dinar

Ok time to daydream yet again ...

1) Payoff car and debt.
2) Visit Australia & possibly move there.
3) Buy a house.
4) Keep working.

I have a friend who just bought I think it was $1,500 usd worth of Iraqi Denar (sp)

I'm thinking since the value is down so low right now it's bound to go up and people are going to make a killing on it.

How did your friend buy it? I want to go through some established business, not some random online website

400,000.... that's a great hunk of change to give you a nice start to early retirement. Without advice from a financial advisor this is what I would do:

1) I'd load the max amount into an IRA.
2) Increase my 401K contributions to max out every year and supplement the loss in income with the 400K.
3) Buy my mom a modest home & property in Myrtle Beach, SC in my name. It will be a vacation/investment home for me when she passes on.
4) Pay off/pay down my mortgage.
5) Take a two week vacation wherever my gf and I decide.
6) Start a ladder of CDs and invest in the stock market.

please. California is where the overinflated housing prices are.

my parents said they could sell their house for 800k now in san jose. it's in a nice quiet, family neighborhood that everyone wants to move in to. but no one ever moves out, driving up the demand. 2 story, 5 bed, 2 1/2 bath, big front and back yards, forgot the square footage. living room, dining room, family room, entire downstairs remodeled. $$$ whenever my parents decide to sell.

now with 400k, i'd pay off student loans, put money away for school, invest like crazy, and take a nice vacation. and i'll consider the new car.

student loans have such low interest rates. my loans are locked in at under 3%. IMO it's better to invest the money and take the tax deduction on any interest paid on the student loans.

I'd ask for more money

i dunno. mine are locked in at 2.625 and i have about 13 years left ;) however i might go back to school, and while i can defer, the interest is still accruing and i won't necessarily get the tax break then either if i defer the interest also.

especially if i go to law school, my debt will be 100k easy. *sigh*

i just want my 80 dollars a month back.

lol.. i'm paying $120 a month or something like that. I owe roughly 15k in student loans... not too shabby.

Real Estate is EXTREEEEMELY low here, so:

Buy a House 100K
Invest 200K
Play (car, upgrade stuff, stuff for kiddies, go to VEGAS and try to turn 10k into a MIL......)100K

Broke again!

I'd pay off my mortgage (113,000)
My Jeep note (17,000)
Fully fund the IRA's and the kids Education IRA thingy's (about 15,000)
20,000 for the equity loan

The rest I'd give the kids each 22K for 2004 and 2005 and put that into a Growth Stock mutual fund to fund college in aabout 8 years. and put the rest into a mutual fund for my old age.

Wow, so maybe dh did something useful by bringing home those worthless 25,000 dinar bills, ROFL. Those and the patches from Iraqi officer's uniforms...here I was thinking it wasn't worth much. Heh.

400,000...hmm...that wouldn't pay for even a yucky house back home. So I'd probably put half of it towards a house--but since we don't need one yet (we may be moving around quite a bit more in the next couple of years) I'd have that in some sort of safe investment type fund or high yield savings or whatever...I'm totally ignorant about those things now as we have no money, but if we had a big chunk I'd learn ;)

With the other half...we'd pay off the minivan, pay off my student loans, start a college fund for all 3 kids, establish a decent sized savings account, buy some nice furniture, and set up an allotment of sorts for the remainder--supplementing our monthly income a bit for however many years, letting me continue to be a SAHM until I truly want to work rather than me being forced into it because CA is much more expensive than the KY/TN area.

Yep. My parents' house is also a 5-bedroom but is only one story, their neighborhood is decent but not "the place" everyone wants to move to, schools nearby are OK but not great...and it's probably worth about the same amount of money. Houses on that street go for 700K to a million. It's ridiculous--they are NOT million dollar houses! I was looking for 3-bedroom houses recently and man...we'll never be able to afford a mortgage...never...waaaah. But then I was also checking out rentals...$1500/mo for a 3-bedroom...looks like we can't afford to rent either ROFL. This next year is going to be interesting to say the least.

If you don't mind me asking, where did he get those?

I'm looking to buy some

He got them in Iraq when he was there. But he only has a few and I think we're keeping them...I had planned on including them in an album I'm going to make (someday, anyway) of his deployment. If you're really that interested I'll ask him whether he wants to keep them or not; I'm assuming he wants them though. He didn't bring very much home from over there. My neighbor's husband brought back a big blanket from Saddam's palace...now that's a decent souvenier LOL.

Oh, I didn't mean to buy them from you, I'm looking to buy a much larger amount :P

SInce their value is so low, $1000 US buys around 1 million dinar! My dad and I are considering getting some of the currency, maybe half of 1 million dinar though

Just make sure it's the new dinar, then, not the old ones. The bills with Saddam on them might make nice collector's items but they won't give you the value increase you're looking for. Which I'm sure you know but just had to add it anyway.
