As we finish readying things for Black Friday and planning the various GottaPoints giveaways, it’s come to our attention that there is some posting behavior in certain sub-forums that isn’t allowed elsewhere.
In the Freebies & Free Offers, Contests & Sweepstakes, Grocery & Printable Coupons and Surveys & Research Studies sub-forums, members reply with nothing more than “thanks” very frequently. This is good as it shows the thread’s author that their efforts are appreciated. However, elsewhere on the forum, posts which don’t contribute to the topic are generally not permitted. Because posts earn GottaPoints and other site privileges, this isn’t very fair to members of the forum who don’t participate in these particular sub-forums. In addition, the large number of these kinds of posts makes it difficult to see posts which do contain useful information about the particular offer.
To continue to give you a way to acknowledge the efforts of other members, in these four sub-forums we have added a new “thanks” feature. Some of you have seen this tested over the past few days in the Freebies forum. Next to the first post in every thread will be this "THANKS" button: http://forums.gottadeal.com/images/gottadeal/buttons/post_thanks.gif
If you would like to thank the author of the thread for their post, from now on instead of replying with "thanks" or "thank you", just click that button. It will add your name to a box under the post which will contain the names of all members who have thanked the author of that thread. If you'd like to try it, click the thanks button to the bottom-right of this post to see how it works.
Any future replies in these four sub-forums which just say "thanks" or "thank you" will be deleted.
During our testing of this feature in the Freebies forum, members expressed that while they liked the feature, replying to a thread (and the accompanying blue “dot” on the forum thread listing) was their way of tracking that they had requested a freebie or coupon, entered a contest, or filled out a survey. While this dot will no longer be a way of tracking which threads you have participated in, by clicking the thanks button, you will still be able to see whether or not you have participated because your name will appear in the box under the first post in that thread.
We recognize that this will be a change that will take some getting used to. However, we feel that this is a necessary and fair change to make.
