About the Study:

This study aims to understand how your teenager pays attention to human and non-human sounds by recording brain activity from an EEG test. The EEG test involves placing electrodes with a gel onto your teenager’s scalp, which is a proven safe method that has been used in infant studies. There are no physical risks from undergoing an EEG test. However, slight skin irritation may occur from the electrode gel only in teenagers with extremely sensitive skin. In the future, this study may be important in understanding how your teenager can discriminate different types of sounds in their environment. The results will be used to compare to teenagers with autism that may have different sound discrimination outcomes.

What the Study Involves:

The 1st part of the study involves a psychological evaluation from a clinical psychologist, which will last no more than 1 hour. The 2nd part of the study involves undergoing the EEG test, which will take no more than 2 hours. The entire study will take place at the Brain Institute of Miami Children’s Hospital.

Eligible Participants:
We are looking for female or male teenagers between the ages of 12-17 years old whose main spoken language is English. Participants must have no history of hearing impairments. Also, each participant must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

The study will take place from June 10th-24th during evenings and weekends.
