HBS Research Study Participation

Welcome to the home page for participation in research studies through the Harvard Business School. Most of our studies take place on the Harvard Business School Campus, but we also conduct a few on-line studies that can be taken from any computer with an internet connection. We welcome new, current and former study participants--and your friends! Please read the following general information if you are interested in participating.

Eligibility Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must not be on the payroll at Harvard University
Must be fluent in English
Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible to receive payment from Harvard University—see details
You cannot participate in the same study more than once.
Observe other eligibility restrictions in specific study descriptions
Compensation
For most studies conducted at HBS, payments range from $15 to $40, with an average of $20-$25. Minimum payment of $10 if you sign up, are eligible, and show up. Note: To receive any payment, you must arrive on time!
Study Information
Studies usually last 1 to 2 hours (payments are higher for longer experiments) Most studies are conducted on computers, so familiarity using computers is needed Study topics include decision making, marketing, bargaining, negotiation, auctions Studies may involve interactions with others
Specific information is provided in the study descriptions under "Current Studies"
On-line Study Information
Even if you are not a local resident, you can register to participate in on-line studies.
On-line studies generally take 15-45 minutes to complete. You are typically given a window of 12-48 hours to complete the study.
For most on-line studies, payments range from $5 to $25, with an average of $10-$15. We will send your payment via U.S. mail. Please allow at least 2 weeks for your payment to arrive. Please make sure we have your current address is correct before you take an online study or your payment will be significantly delayed. Go to "Update Profile" to make any changes. We will also need your SSN (or Visa information) before you are eligible for on-line studies. Click here for more information.
Signing Up
Register for the subject pool by completing the form connected to the "Register" button in the upper left-hand panel of this page. You only need to do this once. If you register twice with conflicting information you could be blocked from all CLER studies. Please go to "Update Profile" if you need to update any of your registration information.
After you're registered, sign up for studies through the forms connected to the "Current Studies" button in upper left-hand panel of this page. Once you log on through our secure web page you can sign up for any of the studies you see (you will only see studies if you are eligible for them).
You can also use the current studies page to remove yourself from a study if something comes up and you cannot attend.
Showing Up: Important to Arrive on Time
Many experiments require a minimum or specific number of participants, so it is very important to show up if you have confirmed. The researcher may not be able to run the experiment if there are not enough participants present.
Participants must arrive on time to be eligible for any payment.
Some researchers administer early fees to those participants who arrive early, as specified (usually 5 or 10 minutes early). This fee is in addition to the show up fee. Fee information is included in the study descriptions.
You must provide a valid ID upon request.
Free Parking
If you confirm your participation for a study by 3:00PM on the business day before the study, you are eligible for free parking (space available, which it almost always is) in the Harvard Business School parking lot. Just give your name to the parking attendant and let him or her know that you are attending the research experiment in the "CLER Lab." Make sure you say "CLER," there has been some confusion in the past. If a problem arises, save your parking receipt and you can be reimbursed.
Directions
Click on the "Directions" button on the upper left-hand panel of this screen for directions to the Computer Lab for Experimental Research (CLER), where most of the studies are conducted. If the study is to be conducted somewhere else, this information will appear in the study description. We really appreciate your participation and hope your experience is a good one. Please contact cler@<hidden> with additional questions or concerns. Thank you!
Feel free to send e-mail with questions, comments or ideas.

Thank you! I have enrolled, but I left off the social security number. I will decide about entering it when they send me a survey. Have you completed surveys with them in the past? Were you paid?

I don't blame you. I would have entered into the comments section you were doing so. Just so they know you are interested but cautious. These guys are solid. They pay and they pay when they say they will. I haven't had a lot of surveys. Don't know why. Probably just don't fit the demographics they are looking for.

I hope this is the right Harvard one, it is the one w/CLER & the computer lab in it so I hope I have the right one. Well anyway I have a hard time remembering to check this one but they do have one up, but I wouldn't worry about their time of 11AM b/c it goes to 11PM the next day (1/24-25)that 11AM sharp may be more for students that actually go to the lab.

Dear participant,

We apologize for any passcode confusion at the end of the survey. There should be no problem with your data and you do not need to retake the survey.

I have a question.....Can all their surveys be taken online? I passed on one ( I guess the Jan. 24th one) because it said at the CLER building and it was talking about parking and such. I didn't want to sign up and it be a show up only study because I was afraid I wouldn't get any other invites. I read on here where someone said they only do them online. Anyway, I just want to ask and clarify..... all studies can be done online?

judithra

I got both of $5 Gc's yesterday :clapping:

dragonfly79
2-9-2007, 11:32 AM
Nevermind my post above. I got the answer by emailing them. They marked online only studies for me (which I apparently didn't notice when I registered with them) so I would only get invites for the online studies.

I have to say I am really impressed with how quickly they get back with you when you ask a question. I can't wait to do a study for them. :)

For anyone who was doing this last year... I'm wondering, do they ask for your ssn so they can send you a 1099 for how much they paid you during that year? I know the threshold for having to do that is $500 per year, but some places do that even for lesser amounts, probably so their accounting is clearer. If you're getting GCs, I dunno know... would that be treated the same as cash money? I'm just trying to get my mind wrapped around how all of this works....

Hi there,

I used to work for an accounting firm. I am pretty sure that it's $600 or more of earned income before you get a 1099 form. But, yes, most companies keep contractors information, including SS# on hand, so that they can track your payments. If they pay you over $600, they have to send the 1099, but if you don't make $600, they still have to keep track for their tax purposes. Usually a CPA would suggest to keep a SS# of the contractor too, from my understanding.

I am not a professional accountant or anything, but this is my understanding from my experience working for a CPA firm. Hope it helps.
