Hey all...

As promised, I'm posting a bit about my experience moving accounts from a cPanel/whm host to DA with Idologic.com (http://www.idologic.com).

For the most part, the move was extremely smooth. However, it isn't without it's bumps. I was warned by Idologic_DH that the scripts used to convert the sites are in a beta form and had some quirks. Make sure that you are willing to accept that before you make the move.

With that said, let me just say... DA rocks! I like it so much better than cPanel. I'm learning how to acomplish things on it much quicker than I ever figured anything out with cPanel. It just seems to make more sense.

DH was EXTREMELY helpful in my move. I know that Idologic didn't have to help me as much as they did. Hopefully, I didn't drive DH too crazy with all of my questions and quirks. There was quite a bit of email traffic that went back and forth.

Here are some things to think about.

DA does not like to assign the same user to more than one DB. If you have a single user assigned to more than one, only the first DB will get the user. A new user will have to be created for the other databases, and you will have to update the configuration of the script that uses it. (Of course, if you design your sites well using a single DB, this won't be a problem. :) )

Apparently cPanel can store email in two different places that are supposed to be linked. If for some reason this link does not exist, you could loose email storred in your inboxes, or it may revert to an older version (as it did with me). If you use POP access, you won't have to worry about this. It was only an issue for me because my wife has been away for a bit and has been using Squirrelmail.

Forwarding email accounts did not appear in my case. Be ready to correct that.

One thing that I worried about was subdomains that I had forwarded using cPanel. Apparently, cPanel creates a directory, and then automatically puts an .htaccess file in that folder to redirect your subdomain. If you currently have subdomain redirects set up, they should work fine in DA. If you want to make new subdomain redirects, you will have to edit the .htaccess file yourself for the redirect. I found this to be extremely easy using the DA file manager.

That is about all that I can think of right now.

Again, my sincerest thanks to Idologic_DH for all of his help. The level of support that I have experienced with Idologic is phenominal compared to other hosts I have been with.

If anyone has any questions that aren't covered here, just post or send me a PM.

Since this post was linked in another... I thought I would add an update.

As to the third point, the problem with subdomains has long since been worked out by DA. It works as smooth as silk now.

Just FYI

Idologic does an excellent job all around, I doubt you'll have any reason to be dissapointed :)

Thanks guys :)

Btw, we ordered the upgrade for the DA server you're on sdible... it's a nice dual xeon 3.0Ghz, 4GB RAM and will end up with the current RAID 1 sata drives, 1 for on-serve backup, that is then synced to our backup server AND a full rsync.

RAID-1 -> redundancy
rsync -> quick full system restores IF both drives in the raid die; roll back options
on-server backup -> speedy backup/restore
off-server backup -> nightly backups with 30 days retention, ie. roll back to a state within 30 days ago (just specify the date). monthly retention up to N months (N still to be determined ;) ).

Btw, the cPanel to DA script is much more stable now and resolves most of the issues above :)

*drool*

I must say. I'm more than happy with your service. The speed at which you answered my helpdesk tickets today really impresses. You are doing a great service for me and my wife since she uses that email. You had it fixed before she had a chance to b*tch at me about it. :)

Thank you again for your excellent service.

yep, same server. I've got to compile a new kernel module as the SATA controller needs to be loaded during the install, but the hardware is sitting there... just waiting for me to send out an email with a time :D

ok, please don't do it over the holiday weekend. I'll be travelling and won't be able to send you urgent support requests if something goes awry :D

Holiday weekend? :) No worries, we can do it after or before it. Probably after, but you'll get proper notice.
