too_n_v_us 11-9-2005, 7:53 PM Just so everyone knows........the laptop for $398 at Wal-Mart.......each store will only have about 12!!!!!!!
burmafrd 11-9-2005, 7:57 PM So the current status is: Walmart has the better deal, but all indications are that each store will only have a dozen. CompUSA has that stupid AOL fine print. Best Buy has not yet come up with anything. And no other store has stepped up either. Have I missed anything?
missyjane 11-9-2005, 8:05 PM too n v us - will the laptop be available prior to BF? If yes can you buy it and then return and rebuy that day?
burmafrd 11-9-2005, 8:13 PM All indications are that this is strictly a BF buy; it will be specifically labeled so that no one can try that.
TheDude 11-9-2005, 8:20 PM Where did you guys get the info about walmart?
too_n_v_us 11-9-2005, 8:22 PM I'm a Store Manager for a Wal-Mart Supercenter here in the midwest......does anyone have any questions??????
missyjane 11-9-2005, 8:25 PM I'm a Store Manager for a Wal-Mart Supercenter here in the midwest......does anyone have any questions??????
I've already asked one and sent a private message.
Every Blackfriday the cheap laptops are one of the things I camp out of stores. makes a good gift for cousins and other kids...
however, this year I have been disappointed so far, except the unusual Walmart deal.
I was even more disappointed after seeing the rumored best buy ads. The CompUSA ads on first inspection seemed too good to be true then when i zoomed in on them..... 12 month AOL membership!!!! awwww... .crap...
anyway, still hoping for some good deals, otherwise Walmart would be my camping ground this year and considering the rumor that only 12 of them would be there, I 'll better get in line before midnight...
QUESTION TO TOO_N_V_US:
would Walmart give out coupons for high value/low stock items to people in queue like my local Bestbuy did last year...
thanks

Most larger retail stores (Walmart and BB in particular) hand out tickets to the first 50 or so people in line. So technically the laptop can SELL OUT before the doors even open. My advice? Just like I've been saying all along get in line EARLY.
too_n_v_us 11-9-2005, 8:42 PM I am a Store Manager for a $140 million Wal-Mart Supercenter in the Midwest. I have rather enjoyed all of these threads regarding everyones ads for Black Friday. I have made a few posts myself. The buzz regarding Wal-Marts ad has been the $398 HP laptop. Here is what everyone needs to know: Each store will only have 10-20 laptops to sell that one day. So if you want one you will have to pray and show up as early as possible.
THERE IS ANOTHER WAY TO MAKE SURE YOU GET ONE OF THOSE LAPTOPS FOR THE $398 PRICE.........
Go to your local Wal-Mart who currently carries the model that will be featured in the Black Friday ad, because not all do. You will see that the current price is around $648-$699, put the laptop on layaway TODAY!! Then on Black Friday you go back into the same Wal-Mart go to the layaway counter and CANCEL that layaway....as soon as you get your money back tell the clerk you have decided to purchase that laptop after all and it will ring for $398 instead of the $648-$699 because the UPC for the laptop in Wal-Marts system will ring for the Black Friday AD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've seen this done before too_n_v_us. I like the special "wm" version of the laptop. For a cheap laptop, yes it is. Will you get it, if you get there at 2am. when too_n_v_us shows up at 4:15 he'll be laughing his ass off;) Personally as good as some of those deals are I'd rather wait around at home to see what shows up online as the online sales get better....ie tigerdirect and others which offer $199 systems sometimes.
I was hoping to see a Pentium M around $550-$600 this year. Doesn't look like that is going to happen.
huseboy 11-9-2005, 9:10 PM thx for the info on the laptops. :)
There is another thread for desktops in the same section. Stock won't be known until your in line or unless the ad states something like "Minimum 10 per store"
sperdue 11-9-2005, 10:02 PM :crossfing Oh how I hope Circuit city comes through with a laptop with a dvd-rw!!! :crossfing
praveenml 11-9-2005, 10:05 PM Toshiba Celeron M 370 Notebook w/ 256MB/40GB/WiFi/Combo Drive - $379.9 - from BB.
Any idea how many of them are on sale and when will BB open on BF. I will be on line standing first at any cost.
-P-
At any cost? I think the cost will be your sleep. :) Depending on how far away it is, I would drive by at midnight and gauge the line then if there is one. If there is, get in it. If not, maybe swign back by 1am or 2.
I would guess each store will have 10-20.
What do you all think about the toshiba laptop at bb? Is it a early bird deal? How many should each store have?
Hopefully someone that works at BB will come in to tell us how many each store will get. I will guess that each store will have 10-20 depending on the market in your area.
This will be an early bird deal for sure. You need to get there way early. Im thinking 1am - 2am.
lauralee 11-9-2005, 11:15 PM I also sent you a PM about the laptops. Thanks in advance, as my Walmart does not have that laptop on the shelf right now.

I would buy the AMD Semparon Laptop anyday over the Celeron M laptop. About Toshiba and HP, its a different thing and I am not too sure about either. But, Semparon would win over Celeron any day. Check out Anandtech.com for some comparative tests and reviews about both processors
The only issue I have with your adive on getting a laptop now and putting on layaway...is not all Walmarts even allow cancellations on BF. I know this is true in my area..I have worked at Walmart and shopped and tried to cancel on bf....it all depends on your local walmart...so please.....call the Walmart YOU plan on visiting on BF to see their layaway policy.
disneytati 11-10-2005, 1:53 PM I need at least 2 laptops... actually I needed 4, but I doubt I'll be able to get 4... It's just me and my aunt. Can one person get 2 tickets at BB and Walmart? But we couldn't buy them, right? What if we get tickets at BB, get in line, pay for 1, get in line again and pay for the other?

At BB, they will only give one ticket to each person. You could try to ask other people who are there for the desktop or a TV to get a ticket and give it to you. Then you should be able to make several purchases. I don't know for sure if WM will give out tickets, though.
WELUVKDS79 11-10-2005, 4:46 PM Does anybody do any favors for students?? Like special financing, discounts, etc??? My laptop is on its last leg and I am working on my Masters and need a new one....:(

My aunt went to this Walmart 2 years ago, and they didn't give tickets, you had to grab the items yourself. But we never know if they're gonna change their policy.

Last year we (2 of us) bought 4 desktops at BB. While waiting in line, we talked to the peeps around us. We got those that didn't want the computer to get and give us the ticket. The tickets are good til 11 A.M. So we paid for 1 then took it to the mobile home we brought, then went back in line and bought the other. But at our BB alot of peeps were selling the tickets and peeps were buying for $50.
10-20 seems low. I think they will have more at my store .
scenicphoto 11-10-2005, 7:25 PM I just registered today on GottaDeal.Com and was looking for someone to answer a question for me.
My granddaughter is needing a Laptop for college soon and we want to get her one for Christmas, and I was told to look on GottaDeal. What do you think, and can you give me some hints as well as some advise on using this system?
Thanks in advance and I hope someone will contact me soon.

snickstx 11-10-2005, 9:50 PM Just checked out Toshiba this (http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cmod.to?seg=HHO&coid=-30395&sel=0&rcid=-26367&ccid=1291021) looks pretty close. I am glad because I want at least 15" screen. Just in case anybody is interested.

WELUVKDS79 11-10-2005, 10:03 PM The WAlmart one is decent but, I need more memory so I am still looking. I called DEll but, they don't have special financing for students. I may just buy one when my student loan check comes in January.

My only hope is Santa to leave me one!

clips2save 11-11-2005, 12:32 AM I posted this elsewhere but thought I would post here also. Question? If there are only going to be 12 - 15 say per store, then obviously there is no need for a pallet. So will they be in the electronics department or located elsewhere? Just wondering what your thoughts are.
Every store, as far as I know, will hand out vouchers for "doorbuster" items before the store even opens. There will be no "mad dash" towards the laptop section as all the laptops will have been taken before they open the doors.
If you guys/gals see the BB ad scans, minimum 10 per store. Your store could have more then 10, but I would strategize so that you know you can get one of the 10 if you want it.
sperdue 11-11-2005, 1:36 AM The best buy scan shows a the gateway celeron w/dvd-rw for $579 no rebates. I think this will work! Any thoughts?
89MustangGX 11-11-2005, 1:38 AM Link for the detailed specs of the BB Toshiba Laptop. I'm kinda leaning towards this one now. Only negative I can find is possibly short battery life.
Thoughts?

EDIT: I noticed they seem to have a battery available that is double the size if that becomes a problem. Also -- for memory it will take up to 2gb, and MAY have a slot free, so no problem there upgrading memory, though you may have to get rid of what's in there.
Daisimae 11-11-2005, 1:40 AM Battery life doesn't bother me. I need the laptop for work, at home. It will never leave the laptop cart and stay permanently plugged in. Thanks for the link.

I'm the same although my Dell Inspiron 700m laptop offers an impressive 5 hours of battery life.
Just make sure to remove the battery if you plan on using A/C power for an extended period of time.

I got in line at my local Best Buy at 12:30 last year...I was FOURTH
They came out around 4:30am to give the tickets. By then we already had 200 people in line.
I'm thinking I will be line at our Wal-Mart this year.
Kingfalcon 11-11-2005, 5:24 AM In regards to the Walmart laptop:
From what I can tell, this laptop is essentially a model from the ze2000z line. If you believe that to be the case, then here are some reviews (on the ze2000z) which may indicate how the WalMart lappy will perform:

Hey is everyone opening at 5 or just wal-mart. Called the local store today and they said there getting 35 laptops!!!!!!But only 15 desktops.

reznaissance 11-11-2005, 9:19 AM :) Hi All, I'm a newbie to this wonderful gottadeal world. Thanks for all your info. I was wondering if I call Walmart or BB would they let just a regular customer know how many laptops will be shipped/received at their store or is that "classified information"/
snickstx 11-11-2005, 9:33 AM The BB Toshiba Laptop looks pretty much the same as the one I posted yesterday. I did a little bit more looking, expecially since the listed price is out the door plus tax, no rebates. I found 4 different rebates.
$100 for the laptop itself
$60 for Toshiba case
$60 for Netgear 802.11g router
$100 for Epson CX4200 printer
I have not read all the fine print(any volunteers?) as I am at work, and I am sure the processors will try to find a way to invalid some of these but it's worth a try. Go here (http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cmod.to?seg=HHO&coid=-30395&sel=0&rcid=-26367&ccid=1291021) for the laptop then click on more for the rebate details. Also, if anybody can make out a model number in the ad, I would appreciate it, I'm blind.

IIRC, that never came to fruition, it was part of the rumour stage. Also, most of their prices are after huge rebates.

How do we know where these sale items will be in the store when the doors open??
TheDude 11-11-2005, 12:59 PM How do we know where these sale items will be in the store when the doors open??
Hi,
Most of the stores I know (BB, CC) will give out coupons(more like a piece of paper) to people standing in-line before they open the door, and after they open you probably will have to go to a counter of some sort to pickup the laptop.
They won't have them just laying around.
ckostyun 11-11-2005, 1:41 PM New here, thanks for all the great info!
How do we know where these sale items will be in the store when the doors open??
BB usually has all the computers behind the "Tech Bench" where they do the computer repairs. You take your "coupon" there and turn it in for whichever product(s) you want. This way there isn't the stampede that you hear about at other stores.
As far as other sale items, DVDs etc, I usually scout the store for general areas on Wed before BF, that usually gives me an idea of where I want to head.
Good Luck everyone!
OKCowgirl 11-11-2005, 1:58 PM Okay ... anyone have the specs on this computer at Wal-mart??

adster 11-11-2005, 2:15 PM I posted this over at FW, but wanted to spread it overe here...
After looking really hard at the scans and at the Gateway website, I was able to figure out the model number of the Gateway laptop. Gateway MX6030.
Here are the specs:
http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gateway/6000Series/5378sp3.shtml
There is nothing about battery life in there, and I couldn't find it, however the Toshiba is supposedly only 1.5 hrs. The thing that disappoints me about the Gateway laptop is the video chipset, it's only and Intel Extreme 2 Graphics set with 32 megs of memory, while the Toshiba is an ATI X200 Radeon chipset with up to 128 megs of memory.
Also, the memory. The Gateway uses PC2700 DDR memory while the Toshiba uses PC4200 DDR memory. So you have to ask yourself, is the $200 worth the DVDR and the extra 20 gigs of harddrive space knowing the speed and quality of the RAM and video chipset is lower?

I looked at that last night as well. Kind of disappointed in those specs, but I've had very good luck with Gateway in the past. From the looks of the ad scan, the Gateway has a dvd-rw, which none of the rest I've seen do.
malachitecat 11-11-2005, 3:53 PM I'm new to this site and new to BF shopping. I am debating if I should get in line for the $398 laptop at WM or if I should just get the IC Power CN5560 that I have on layway. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
The BB store i went to (Santana Row , SJ)was new and very few people knew about it. Most people crowd at the Milpitas store.
The first guy in the line was a "group" of about 10 ppl who had come at 10pm ( the previous night).
Tickets were handed out, and each ticket had a number, my ticket number was i think 29 and there were about 50ppl in the line before me not all took the laptops (hence i did get one thankfully).
The store had only about 33 pieces . . Some people picked the tickets and never bought the laptops ( I met them the same evening at microcenter). From what i heard is that if ppl do not show up to buy the ticketed items, then those items are sold openely at 11 am.
However please note.
Each laptop box (at thepurchase counter) had a ticket number.
The laptop boxes were "opened" by BB ppl, when asked, the store guys told us that they had to do something before selling the laptops. (They may have removed something out of the box/machine, it does not make sense to sell something cheap and add something too).
The laptop has been fantastic all the while. The authorized service center chagned the motherboard for free to fix a problem, this was done while within the 1yr warranty period (thought towards the end of the warranty period).
What do you all think about the toshiba laptop at bb? Is it a early bird deal? How many should each store have?
BB guys, go out thru the line with a store map explaining what is where ( ususually).
I've already said I'm blind, I checked the ad again but I couldn't find it. I saw the $299 Compaq but not the $399 Toshiba. What page are you seeing it on?
saluken 11-11-2005, 5:20 PM Toshiba Celeron M 370 Notebook w/ 256MB/40GB/WiFi/Combo Drive - $379.9 - from BB.
Any idea how many of them are on sale and when will BB open on BF. I will be on line standing first at any cost.

BB opens at 5 am this year, an hour earlier. They're also doing instant rebates. I wonder if this is to draw some from the Walmart crowd. There is a min. of 10 laptops per store.
Also, which is better, the Walmart HP laptop for $399 or the BB toshiba for $379?

I think according to the reviews Walmart HP laptop is better since it has a sempron processor which is far much better than Intel Celeron.

On a side note, the HP/Compaq ownership experience overall, at least from a survey conducted by PC World (take this with as much salt as deemed necessary) is the poorest among those owning any laptop products. The HP/Compaq product is the lowest ranked notebook in their survey, surprisingly eMachines is tops. Second in the list is Apple, Dell comes in 5th after Medion (3rd) and Alienware (4th).
Link to PC Worlds's survey where readers rate the laptop manufacturers. (http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,118514,pg,3,00.asp)
Just some more food for thought..........

I would buy the Toshiba @<hidden> BB over the HP @<hidden> WM
msbranh 11-11-2005, 6:10 PM You will have to take a chance on the laptops. The avg store will get 25 with some getting up to 100. This item will also be on the web site that morning but will sell out just as fast. Good hunting!

PooterMan 11-11-2005, 6:56 PM Does the IBM Thinkpad have a good reputation?
Selena
The IBM thinkpad have been pretty solid for me in the past (I've purchased approximately 50 in the last 3-4 years for our company). However, that being said, the thinkpad division is now no longer IBM, it was sold off to Lenovo(China based company). At least for a while I doubt you will see any change, but long term I'm still reserving judgement. I've been picking up a few other laptops when we need one or two just to see whats out there. One thing I will just offer for an individual...BUY EXTENDED WARRANTIES! Most laptops can even be purchased with accidental damage insurance. Laptops are expensive to repair or replace, an additional 100$ per year is well worth it when your daughter going off to college puts the laptop on top of the car and drives away with it still there (This happened to a coworker within the last month).
Happy Trails

Da Puff 11-11-2005, 9:08 PM I made a comparison table for $600 or less laptops. Check it out here:
http://blackfriday.gottadeal.com/laptops.htm
Let me know if other information or more laptops should be added.
I'd like either the Toshiba from Best Buy or the HP from Walmart. Which do you think is better?
89MustangGX 11-11-2005, 9:20 PM I noticed from the product specs on the BB Toshiba that it "starts at 5.88 pounds depending on configuration." Not sure if that's solid enough for you to include in your chart or not.
As for which to choose -- I thought I was set on the HP, even though I'm not the biggest fan of HP/Compaq. Then I saw the Toshiba come through from BB with similar specs and I was sold. I really like the Toshiba laptops. I think I'd still go after it even if the price was equal or a little more than the HP.

I want to get another this year for my big bro.
hong2221 11-11-2005, 10:12 PM I'm getting paranoid that I won't get the laptop. Any suggestions to make sure I can get the laptop for sure? I'm pretty sure I'm waking up at 4:20am to get this laptop. And try to go out the night before to best buy asking for tickets. But besides that, what else should I do?

You should be paranoid because I can guarantee unless you live in a SMALL CITY, you will be 300th in line at 4:20 AM.
Why are you waiting so long to get in line? The laptops will be SOLD OUT before the doors even open. If you don't have a ticket = no laptop for you.
Dural 11-11-2005, 10:52 PM I'm going with the Toshiba for my mom, the Celeron M should be faster and have better battery life than the Sempron M plus I'd prefer Toshiba over HP. 1.5 hours seems too low for the Toshiba, does it only have a four cell battery? With my 9300 and eight cell battery that has a 17" lcd, faster Pentium M and GeforceGo 6800 I can get two hours with my lcd at the brightness I use when it is plugged in.

No need to be paranoid. I can tell you for a fact that if you don't even wake up til 4:20am, you won't be getting a laptop. You have to be in line MUUUUCH earlier than that.

It does only have a 4-cell battery, but in the Toshiba spec sheet they also list an 8-cell battery for it. I seems to me that if you buy the other battery you would get 3 hours out of it -- maybe more?

No expert on this, but my wife bought the emachine desktop from BestBuy, Indianapolis last year and got in line at 6:30am with 400 people in front of her. They handed out vouchers.
They had $500 laptop vouchers left at CompUSA and I was in line at 6:00am (200 ppl in front of me). Except a stick of 256k ram I got everything I went for (bunch of wireless stuff and a 128M PCI Video card). My point is simply that those 200 people and I were in line for vastly different things. Maybe everyone saying get in line at 12:00am just thought the laptop vouchers were gone by 4:30am. Tons of the AOL PCs were left even through out the next week.
I'll give one caution though. Some people thought the guys at CompUSA were just handing out donuts/coffee and didn't know there were LapTop vouchers.
Anyone else get donuts and coffee? That sure is nice at 6:00 am.

Yes it will as DVD ripping and burning is very CPU intensive.
My Dell Inspiron 700m laptop has a Pentium-M 1.6 GHz and I have no problems burning DVD's.

Kokomo, Best Buy, we were in line around 5ish and all the E-Machines vouchers were LONG gone. Must have more hardcore shoppers in Kokomo than in Indy.

I've been to two diff. best buy's in the milwaukee area in the last couple years...doors open at 6am. If you goto the one in the nicer side of town get there by 4:45 or you won't get anything, showed up at the one out by mayfair a little after 5:30 and there were like 30 people infront of me. It depends on the size of the area and what the community is like;)

jpeyton 11-12-2005, 2:01 PM The OP should add the Staples Acer laptop, which I think is easily one of the best laptop deals on BF. The 8-Cell Lithium Ion battery caught my eye as a standout feature; that typically means battery life is in the 3+ hour range.
$449 with no rebates means you're paying a little extra, but would you rather brave the crowds at Staples or at WalMart?

jason - Yes you can turn an internal DVD Burner into an external. All you need is an external enclosure (http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=92), FireWire is recommended over USB.
LuvJoyLunaDawg 11-12-2005, 3:26 PM Okay, I do BF every year, but I've never gotten a "big" ticket item before this year. I *need* the Best Buy laptop. So my question is, when do I get in line to guarantee that I will get one? I'm thinking about 11pm? Also, is that safe LOL?

noitammus 11-12-2005, 5:17 PM Does anyone know the upgradeability of these laptops?
Usually, it isn't too difficult to upgrade the memory, and most of these machines have 2 dimm slots. But what about processors?
Is it possible to put a Turion64 into the Walmart/HP notebook, as the sempron shows its age in the future? Or how about a Pentium-M into the Best Buy/Toshiba or the Staples/Acer? If you were able to drop in a Pentium-M into the Toshiba or the Acer, would the power managing features of the Pentium work? Would the 64bit capability of the Turion work in the HP?
I'm guessing that doing so would probably void the warrenty, but the warrenties seem pretty short anyway.
Of course, this is assuming that these cheap lappies live long enough to be upgraded...which may not be the case.

thekidrocks 11-12-2005, 9:20 PM My personal vote is for the Acer at Staples - same maker as the Gateway at Best Buy BTW. Also last year they ordered items that they sold out of, and had them delivered to your door. I'd bet they will do that again this year.
I'd rather pay $449 for a laptop I don't have to fight over, or get no sleep over than save some bucks and loose a lot of sleep.

The Best Buy and Walmart laptops can connect to the internet 3 different ways:
Internal 56k modem for dialup, just plug in the phone line directly into the laptop.
Internal 10/100 Ethernet for high speed internet.
802.11b/g WiFi fi you have high speed broadband and a wireless router
So it should not be a problem, you can find complete specs here (http://forums.gottadeal.com/showpost.php?p=115661&postcount=75)

Correct.
I'm not that computer hardware savvy and I was able to upgrade my 256MB RAM to 1.25GB in about 5 minutes.
Just flipped the laptop upside down, remove two small screws, discharged my static by touching a piece of metal, inserted the RAM and it snapped in place. Put the cover back on, put screws back in and boot it up.

BLKFRI 11-13-2005, 2:53 AM Does the Acer from Staples have a PCMCA slot? From the specs it looks like the Toshiba at Best Buy does. I just bought a TV card from Fry's for $30 AR and a laptop padded bag. I'm already buying needed accessories for my new laptop.
I have never seen a laptop without a PCMCIA slot on it.
BLKFRI 11-13-2005, 3:10 AM The cheaper ones have no slot cuz now wireless is built in and no one uses modems and the Great Quality ones at Fry's do not have one for sure.
Yea, but are you talking about Fry's "Best Quality" brand? I wouldn't really use them as a bench mark to judge the rest of the industry.

You're right, its GQ. I don't know if I could buy something where they advertise the "supposed" quality in the name itself.

BLKFRI 11-13-2005, 10:45 AM RossMAN, thanks for the info. For those who can't make Best Buy, the Acer seems to be is a great sub for the Toshiba. As for the GQ notebooks I know 3 people who have them. I upgraded the HD's for them. Way easier than taking the whole Toshiba apart. They get the job done. For under $400, they are excellent for working in the field. And I do mean "in the field". If someone steals it, or it gets run over, your not out a lot of $$$.

They always open at 5:00am on bf. I'm thinking about going at 2:00am. do you think i will get it.
dissident 11-13-2005, 12:04 PM you should call to see how wal-mart handles the laptops... if they issue vouchers or just have a free for all, and also verify the location of the laptop so you can RUN right to it right away. Otherwise it's a crap shoot, waiting all that time and perhaps not getting one.
darkzeus 11-13-2005, 3:26 PM Here is a good question, what about all the wal-marts that I have called and they don't carry HP laptops? Is this HP laptop gonna be available only for BF or after BF? Or should the wal-marts already carry this product at a normal price, or other HP laptop products for that matter.
Thanks
pinkroses4mommy 11-13-2005, 3:53 PM I saw that Best Buy had a limit of 1 laptop per household. Does anyone know if Wal-mart has a limit?
BLKFRI 11-13-2005, 3:56 PM How would they know? Pay with cash!
My question is "How many people are going to get a laptop on this black friday?" I just want want to know my chances of getting one at Wal Mart or Best Buy.
RossMAN 11-13-2005, 4:23 PM My question is "How many people are going to get a laptop on this black friday?" I just want want to know my chances of getting one at Wal Mart or Best Buy.
Laptops will be VERY popular for 3 reasons:
The BF mentality that prices are at their all-time low and this is totally not true.
$399 low prices, where as other laptops normally cost around $1,000
No rebates for the two most popular laptops HP @<hidden> Walmart and the better Toshiba @<hidden> Best Buy.
My advice to you get is get in line EARLY. Otherwise there will be 100 people in front of you and each store only has a few laptops.
How long is the battery life of HP Pavilion ze2308wm? The only thing that stops me of getting Toshiba is its battery life. And I think Sempron at HP is better than Celeron at Toshiba
The laptops at Wal Mart are based upon if they carry them everyday or not. If they have a laptop section now at your local Wal Mart they will have more laptops on BF compared to the stores that do not carry laptops. Example: the Supercenter here in town does have laptop now and they are getting 35. The Wal Mart that is a couple of miles down the road does not carry laptops and they are getting 10 for BF. Call the store that your going to shop and ask for the manager over electronics and ask them how many they are getting.

That was a potential concern for me as well. I do see that Toshiba has an 8-cell battery available (which presumably doubles life of the 4-cell) if it becomes a problem. It was about $100 IIRC. Just something else to consider...

I went right to Toshiba's website. They have a full spec sheet as well as accessories and lots of other stuff there for the laptop.
www.toshibadirect.com
Battery part number: PA3420U-1BRS
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/adet.to?poid=294716&seg=HHO
The part number says it's for an L15 series, but it comes up as being an accessory for the L25 if you go through the menu system, and the same part number is listed in the spec sheet for the L25, so I'm thinking it's the right one.

I wouldn't settle for anything less than a 6 cell which should give you 2.5-3 hours battery life.

The 4-cell battery is probably there because of price point issues. Most people are going to see the price first and specs second.
I looked at the comparison chart last night that Ross posted and the Toshiba at Best Buy has more potential than WalMart's HP. Some people prefer AMD processors over Intel. But the Intel Celeron's 1MB cache give it a lot more breathing room than the AMD Sempron's 256KB. The Toshiba also is using 25% faster RAM and 20% faster FSB (FSB means "Front Side Buss" which is the internal speed between the processor and cache, and about 15% faster drive speed.
For anyone contemplating which one to go for... ideally the best thing would be to try and find a similar working model on display somewhere and try them out with some simple tasks (see how quickly windows open and close, or how fast graphics load on the screen.)
nickle831 11-13-2005, 9:22 PM Okay the laptop they are going to have on sale on BF at BB is the same one we bought last week on sale for $599 (or $549 don't remember exactly). We haven't opened it yet. Would I be able to return it and rebuy it or get a price difference reimbursment?
Hi Brad,
Will we be seeing more ad scans besides the ones on the ad scan thread?

I agree on all counts.
I looked over the specs of the different laptops and decided that all things considered I liked the Toshiba better. That's partially the reason I went looking for a better battery.
If you spend just another $100 on the battery, and another $100 on memory (1g)[turn up the video memory share to 128mb], I'm not sure there are any other laptops in the $600 range that would compare. You could even go a step further and spend $150 on a 7200RPM HDD (100g) and I would think for under $750 total you'd have a killer little laptop.

Yes, when new ads are submitted to us (http://blackfriday.gottadeal.com/Submit) they will be posted. We don't have a BF ads tree or secret vault where all these ads come from.
There are 3 stores left which might have laptops: Circuit City, Fry's and Micro Center.

I wouldn't believe those numbers as an indicator of good performance... AMD processors favor latency over bandwidth, and even though the celeron uses faster DDR2 at 533MHZ, it has more latency. AMD processors use an integrated memory controller to reduce latency, in addition to the 800MHZ HyperTransport bus which brings up the effective system bandwidth to 1600MHZ. The NXBit or no execute bit which is a hardware based virus protection is a plus.

killerkhalsa 11-14-2005, 8:02 AM the WalMart laptop(398 dollar HP) has a cache size of just 256KB where as the one at BestBuy(378 Dollars Toshiba) has 1 MB cache and all other centrino laptops have a cache size of 2MB or more which is something noteworthy and which cannot be upgraded like RAM. Plz check this spec well before goin for the laptop from WalMart.
and yes Cache is really expensive and which is what saving them money on this hp laptop.
saluken 11-14-2005, 3:25 PM I found at the toshiba website they have a $100 mail in rebate for the Toshiba satelite a80(the same laptop they have at bb for $379) It should work since bb only has instant savings on the laptop. There's no details as to those instant rebates from Best Buy and what they are. One IR might be including that $100 off instantly instead of having to mail it in.
BTW ... Is that the same one being offered on BF? Model number seems different, but the specs are the same. If it is, depending on the details about those instant rebates, this might be a very profitable find and may change some people's decision of what laptop to buy.
dhancock219 11-14-2005, 4:14 PM We're fortunate enough to live near a Microcenter store (I think they only have 12 stores nationwide), and I should be getting their BF ad in the mail any day.....they always cream the "Big boys" in price and quality on BF.
zgamer 11-14-2005, 4:24 PM The $379 laptop model is L25-S1192. It is not A80. Am I missing something?
Correct, it is the L25-1192.
saluken 11-14-2005, 4:35 PM THanks, I missed the model number. I just compared the pictures and specs and thought they might match. HEy $379 for the laptop is still a sweet deal. I'll be up early that morning.
thanks for the comparison chart DA PUFF
What if Fries BF sale will be better than Wal Mart's or Best Buy's? Do you think it is possible?
zgamer 11-14-2005, 6:01 PM The sub-400 laptops are cheap but before I would use them I would spend an extra $100 for memory for the laptop at the very least to get any decent performance....at that rate it may be better to look elsewhere.
Yeah, I think so. And not only memory, you have to upgrade the battery too.
Hour and 30 minutes won't satisfy you a lot. But in common if you upgrade everything it is still a good deal, comparing to 1000-1500$ laptops
MShopper63 11-14-2005, 6:58 PM Hi Everyone,
I am so glad I found this site. I just love all the information you guys give. I have a question for the tech people out there. I've seen lots of comparison on the WM vs BB $400 laptop. What I'm wondering is what is your take on the Tosh vs Gateway at BB on BF. Thanks :)
Wal mart laptops are $488 and that is in the norteast. I saw a WalMart BF flyer today and the laptop and desktop are $488. will this affect the buying lineup??? I called BB today and the one here in Mass has only 10 to give at that price.
RossMAN 11-14-2005, 7:57 PM I've seen lots of comparison on the WM vs BB $400 laptop. What I'm wondering is what is your take on the Tosh vs Gateway at BB on BF. Thanks :)
I would go with the Gateway because of these added features/specs:
15.4" widescreen LCD with better resolution than the Toshiba.
512MB RAM vs 256MB RAM, just enough for Windows XP Home.
60GB Hard Drive vs 40GB
DVD Burner vs combo CD/DVD. You can burn DVDs, CDs and watch them as well.
4 USB ports vs. 3.
1 FireWire vs. no FireWire.
Not sure about battery life.
You did check out Da Puff's laptop comparison chart (http://blackfriday.gottadeal.com/laptops.htm), right?
Daisimae 11-14-2005, 7:57 PM That's it! I'll be at the BB near my house in MA at 10pm.
LuvJoyLunaDawg 11-14-2005, 8:13 PM With the Walmart $488 thing I'm wondering if I should get to BB earlier. UGH. I am not gonna be a happy camper lol. Literally.
_John_Lennon_ 11-14-2005, 9:05 PM I would go with the Gateway because of these added features/specs:

I have had a 15.4 inch laptop and must say I dislike it. The odd screen resolution would cause small problems for me all the time, like when I try and download a wall paper, or run some of my games, they would show up differently, or when I tried to hook my laptop up to a projector.
For me it ended up being too much hassle for that extra .4 inch, but your mileage may vary.
pcsoon 11-14-2005, 10:12 PM I wouldn't go with the gateway. According to Da Puff's laptop comparison chart, It has a slower procesor, older ram technology, a slower HD, and a older graphics chip which only supports 32mg(?). I can easily add ram and with USB 2.0, firewire is not that much of an issue for me.:)
Graveytrain12 11-14-2005, 10:16 PM I actually like the toshiba better because it has 1)PC4200 Ram instead of the 2700 that the gateway has, even though it's less, it's fast. 2)Has a little bit more processing speed. 3)It has a Radeon X200M graphics card instead of onboard graphics processing. 4) It's cheaper. However, if you want something that'll burn DVD's and etc, the Gateway is the way to go. Actually, I'm still unsure on which one I'm going to get myself.
nickle831 11-14-2005, 10:22 PM does the toshiba have windows XP on it?

It does, but the camera flash obscures it.
zgamer 11-14-2005, 11:57 PM Just a thought about the hp from walmart, the cpu is upgradeable....voids warranty but....you could but a turion in it if you wanted to....not sure about the toshiba but there are take-apart diagrams on hp's site for the one from walmart.

red822 11-15-2005, 10:25 AM What about the Toshiba L25-S1192 Celeron M 370 Notebook w/ 256MB/40GB/WiFi/Combo Drive - $379.99 * at Best Buy. Do you know anything about it.:gd_steeri

BLKFRI 11-15-2005, 10:59 AM After reading the manual for the Acer at Staples, it says it contains 3200/400 ram and is upgradable to 4200/533. This is different from the specs that show it as 2100/266. I'm going down to Staples to see if this is correct.
zgamer 11-15-2005, 11:27 AM A couple of thoughts after looking at the different laptops
BB Gateway -
-overpriced for what you get compared to the rest
BB Toshiba (checked out the 1194....slightly dif. than the 1192) -
-Screen has some flex
-Last year's keyboard had some defects and would break every couple of months(keyboard was redesigned) and the cpu fan tended to have bad bearings from a year ago.
-faster hard drive and 2gigs max memory are a big plus
-no possibility for internal firewire or card reader(other than pcmcia)
-batter life is lacking
HP from WM
-1gig max ram is a problem
-$398 is a decent price, $498 is not worth it
-firewire can be added later...and cpu upgraded to turion
-textured case has a different feel...check out circuit city or compusa as they have slightly different models in stock
-The WM branding on it has issues (to me at least) as I know how companies tend to cut corners when getting in the small conferences with walmart about products and price.....basically you might end up with cheaper made equipment...instead of a metal bracket they will make it plastic to nickel and dime equipment to crappy quality.
CompUSA
-Unless you are looking for a year of AOL dial-up, not worth looking
Acer - Staples
-decent upgradability
-series has had marginal reviews and build quality issues
Kalel 11-15-2005, 12:44 PM mmm much to think about gateway laptop. Few day ago i thought it was the one to buy, but right now i´m a little confuse.
DVD RW is attractive, but maybe its a trap haha

John1983 11-15-2005, 12:48 PM I am a Store Manager for a $140 million Wal-Mart Supercenter in the Midwest.
If you put one on layaway now, cancel the layaway and then buy it on Black Friday, will they have it in stock for you to buy then? Do you need to be in line super early? I love the idea but I want to make sure I know what to do.
dhancock219 11-15-2005, 1:15 PM I'm looking at the copies I made of the rebate forms from this pc/monitor we bought a couple of weeks ago. There is a $50 rebate for the pc valid on purchases from 9/14/2005-1/31/2006, and on the monitor it is $50 for purchases from 7/31/2005-12/31-2005. It doesn't exclude BF date anywhere on the form, but might be wise to print these rebate forms from the Best Buy website before they "conveniently disappear". If they fly, the pc/monitor will be a grand total of $50, which would make it the steal of BF.
dhancock219 11-15-2005, 1:16 PM sorry, wrong forum, should have been in the desktop

You put it on layaway now, on BF go to layaway and say you don't want it anymore, they refund your deposit, put it aside for re-stocking, when suddenly you say "Ya know what, I'll just go ahead and buy it straight out", they give you back said layaway laptop, take laptop to front checkout and $$$!
Think I know what he's talking about, but I'd be more careful than that if I were you guys. That's all assuming they'll have anyone working in layaway on BF since I don't believe they allow layaways on that day. Check with your local WM and make sure they'll even allow layaway transactions on BF.
pebbles 11-15-2005, 1:54 PM Ok, I know nothing about computers, however regarding the Toshiba laptop my friend said
"OK, I think the best value in that list is the Toshiba. Definitely the best performance in the group. But you'd want to upgrade the RAM. The best way would be to buy a 1GB kit (two 512MB chips, matched). You can currently get it for $82.75, delivered. (Because it's DDR2 RAM, it's faster, but the double data rate (DDR2) feature only works properly when using matched pairs of RAM chips.)
It will leave you with an unused 256MB ram chip from the original box, which you could prolly sell on ebay with no trouble, or keep as a spare, or whatever. For about $40, instead, you could buy just one 256MB chip, and hope it matches well with the existing one. That would leave you with the minimum I'd recommend, which is 512 MB total. But for the extra $40-ish bucks, it would be well worth getting a full GB of RAM."
Since I know nothing about computers, and will be camping out at Best Buy for Black Friday, are there any other specials at Best Buy for RAM? And I'm planning to go with a wireless internet. Routers? Can I get it all at Best Buy?

Have to agree with the memory being upgraded, and if you're willing to put forth the effort on eBay, go ahead and go for the 1GB upgrade kit. Far as performance, the Toshiba did have more cache, but a slightly slower processor speed to make up for HP's lower cache and faster processor. They're both pretty comparable.
The deals at BB thus far are for DDR2700 desktop memory. Dunno if anyone has deals on laptop memory yet, but you never know. BB does have a wireless-g router for sale after a mail-in rebate, and you get a $10 gift gard with it. Think all you'll need for wireless internet is that router, since the laptop comes wiht integraded 802.11 wireless LAN (the wireless reciever).

Yeah, that too. However, since your "future" laptop will have a wireless card integrated, you don't need that extra wireless card with the router. That's why I recommend the LynkSys one. Both are the same price after rebates, but the LynkSys comes with the gift card.

Alot of people will. It's a pretty high-end laptop, and a good price at $579 out the door. It's for the more serious business-person needing that much power on the go, not for us common consumers who just want wireless internet. There's lots of choices out there for different needs.

Actually I would consider it higher lower end. It's still a good deal considering you get DOUBLE the RAM, 15.4" widescreen LCD with better resolution, FireWire, 4 USB ports, and of course DVD Burner.
Middle end - HP Pavilion DV4000 or Dell Inspiron 6000
High end - Corporate level, Apple PowerBook 15", IBM ThinkPad T42 series, etc.
stationchief 11-15-2005, 5:12 PM Actually I would consider it higher lower end.
Yeah, kinda what I meant. It's got xtra stuff (extra ports, DVD burner, more this, more that, etc.) that might be unnecessary for "common" use. I'd say about higher "consumer user" type.
phatferd 11-15-2005, 5:37 PM Here is an update regarding the Wal-Mart deal. I called my local Wal-Mart and got a guy who was pretty cool (he was the supervisor because I purposely asked for him and was on hold for about 3 minutes while they got him).
He told me they will be selling it at $388, but he does not know how many he will be getting. He won't know until that morning, but he assumes it will be a good amount.
The lady who I spoke with in Customer Service told me there is a huge line by 4:00am, but it's kind of ridiculous because they don't run out of things that often so everyone still gets what they want.
albrandwood 11-15-2005, 5:52 PM "OK, I think the best value in that list is the Toshiba.
A little knowledge can be dangerous ...
Good news is your friend is right ... about the best value.
Bad news is that your friend is wrong about the technicalities of DDR ...
he is confusing DDR with Dual Channel.
DDRRam (or DDR2) basically means that data is written to the chip both at the front and the back of the clock signal ... and is basically Double the Data Rate of Synchronous DRAM. (also, just as an fyi, DDR2 is sometimes labeled as PCxx00 ... multiply the DDR2-xxx value by 8, to get to the PCxx00 value:
DDR2-266 = PC2100; DDR2-400 = PC3200; DDR2-500=PC4000 etc...)
With Dual Channel, then you are using 2x DDR2 ram modules simultaneously. and Does require matched pairs... which only the top end equipment has ... and these $400 notebooks are definitely not that...
The Toshiba L25-S1192 notebook uses DDR2-533 (aka PC4200) SoDimm ... It supports upto 2Gb of memory (2x 1gb modules) ... since it ships with 1x 256mb, I'd recommend buying 1x 512Mb ... But whatever you buy, insure that it is _AT_LEAST_ 533Mhz ( DDR2-533 or PC4200 ) and that it is a SoDimm (if it isn't, it wont _fit_ inside a notebook.
Other than that, these machines (Toshiba, Acer, eMachines, whatever) will all make good websurfing machines ... none will make an outstanding games machine ... but then, they are only $400 or so...

I'm not sure an Apple PowerBook is ever considered a "Corporate level" machine ... and most Corporates I visit, use the Dell Latitude D610 ... although the IBM T-series is nice, I prefer my Dell XPS-M170.

I should have listed corporate laptops last. I didn't mean to imply the Apple PB is a corporate laptop which it isn't but it's definitely high end vs the iBook.

To administration: When are you planning to get Fries Black friday sale offers?
Guys, you make me reconsider gateway laptop. See you at Best Buy next friday.
I accept the fact that gateway laptop maybe is not the best at video performance but DVD burner is attractive
The lap tops at wal mart are going to be $488 in the north east!!!!!!!!!!!
Belive me I know!!!!!! The best buy laptops are a min of 10 the max is 20 per store. Wal Mart is going to have 10- 65 per store based upon the fact if they carry lap-tops or do not carry lap-tops everyday!!! Also based upon sales(total store) last BF.
rj
Any ?'s ask me!!!
malachitecat 11-15-2005, 7:03 PM If you put one on layaway now, cancel the layaway and then buy it on Black Friday, will they have it in stock for you to buy then?
You can't put it on layaway. The model for BF is a special model number. It is the exact same as the 2108 but has a different number so no one can but it early and return it & buy it again, or put it on layaway. I had one of the 2308's in my hand and tried to put it on layaway. The computer system would not allow the sale because it is for BF only.
malachitecat is right the model has to be the same!!!! I do not let the customers do this on BF because there are already long lines and it is not the same thing. The Gameboys are a different store because we have them at the regular price now and if you cancelled and repurchused them between 5 am and 11 am. That would do a price adjustment in the system but not before or after that time. You would save $30
rj
ps not on the laptops!!!!!

sinoke 11-15-2005, 7:30 PM lol i bought a similar one at circuit city about 6 months ago. mine was $749 becuase I had three rebates to wait on and was only 60 gb hard drive. i'd be suprised if u could find your laptop cheaper than $849. it rules. the ati card makes it run a lot smoother. my friends laptop had similar specs as mine but his had a built in graphics card. lets just say, mine ran unreal tournament 2004 and half-life 2 smoothly, (though not like a $500 graphics can) and his couldn't. (you should have seen the look on his face) Also, the turion rules for gaming and if you compare price and power of the chips to pentium, their's no competition. I highly recommend it!

RossMAN 11-15-2005, 7:56 PM What about battery life, how many cells is the battery? 4, 6, 8, 12?

It's 100x better than the other laptops offered during Black Friday.
However 99% of the people here are choosing price over quality/features.
I`m sorry I mean when are you going to put the "Fry's" store blackfriday offers. You don't have it in your list yet. Just the shop Fry's. I think I spelled it wrong.

Just wanted to point out that if you look at the spec sheet for the Toshiba notebook it states:
"256MB(min)/2048MB (max), 2 memory slots using 256MB, 512MB,
or 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz SDRAM 1.8V SODIMM
memory modules, dual-channel support requires two memory
modules of same capacity and clockspeed"
This makes me think that this $400 notebook does do dual-channel.

There's no link.
He is describing the cost of the BF laptop from WalMart, and replacing the Sempron with a Turion (which is based on the Antlon 64), and then adding/replacing the RAM with a larger one.
It would involve buying each item separately and then replacing the processor and RAM. Unless you're adept at cracking open a laptop and replacing chips yourself, it isn't for the average person.

Just curious, which laptop are you interested in and why?
stiltman 11-16-2005, 3:23 AM the bb toshiba. the price is good and we are getting two plus at bb if you get a laptop you can get the case and essentials kit for $30. amir. the kit is priced at $80 and the case around $35. I looked at it this past weekend. Then we are going to take the laptops to geek squad and bump them up with bb bucks (doubled). OOOHH!! one more thing reward zone points thats another $10. off.:2dollar:
What do you mean bump them up? If you're going to use your BB bucks on the geek squad to install memory for you....don't. Installing memory is the easiest thing you can do to a laptop. Your BB bucks are better spent on the laptop itself or the essentials kit.
