OH NO I am quoting myself ha ha I am thinking the one at office max for 59 after rebate is the same one a CC for 79 after rebate since the OM has 2 rebates one is an instant rebate sooooooooooooo it uses a USB port.
If I know me ... and i do ... I will pick up the CC one since I'll be there. Later try to get OM one. If they're gone .. oh well. If not ... return the CC one.

That makes sense. I am going to OM to get kodak paper anyway.

Sorry if this has been asked already...but do you think my chances for the laptop would be better at BB or CC? I know some have suggested being in line as early as 11pm at BB...would you think the same for CC? thanks!
That's a very good question.
Your chances are definitely better at CC because they're not as busy as BB is. Plus the CC laptop has better specs, it comes with 512MB RAM, larger hard drive and better LCD display. I would get in line around 12 Midnight and you should be ok.

Hence the reason why business at CC is probably gonna pick up. I'm just soo afraid that AOL rebate thing dropping the price of the laptop to $200 and the desktop to FREE is gonna pack that place.

I don't know if this is news, but I see that Dell had a press release this morning saying that starting on Wednesday (11/23) they will sell an Inspiron 2200 Celeron Laptop for $399 and a Dimension 3000 Desktop for $299 (I'm guessing without a Monitor). Certainly these deals rival the CC and BB deals (& maybe even beat them). Not sure about shipping charges...
The sale ends 11/27.
Got a link to confirm that? I checked their website and haven't been able to find anything on that.

Ok, so if I go to CC I can get a better Toshiba for cheaper price?? I can also get my internet hookup there too, right?? Now, I was looking at trying to go wireless, can I do that w/Broadband?? IF so, BB had a D-Link Wireless Networking Kit for $14.99. I went on the D-Link website and typed in the same thing and it came up $119.99. Am I crazy??

I just talked to my local Circuit City. I'm assuming the information is the same for any other Circuit City. Here's what they told me:
1: the laptop is $450 out the door (without AOL). No mail in rebates.
2: Only 1 per person.
3: They will NOT let someone else use your credit card to purchase the laptop. Even if you're standing right there with your ID. So if you're bringing someone with you to get another 1, give them cash.
4: They open at 5 am. Expect long lines, long before 5 am.
5: They will be handing out vouchers. It won't be a free for all to the door at 5:00 am.
Now, the question is, who in Salt Lake is going to be getting one of these? I don't want any competition, lol. It's pretty cold here this time of year, so the later I can show up, the better.
This thread is pretty active, so I'm assuming laptop's are the hot item this year. I need 3 of them, so I'm hoping I don't have too much competition.
Maybe I can find a circuit city in some small town somewhere and show up at 5:00 am and get my 3, lol.

I have NEVER EVER seen this rule in action. Unless it's new this year. I've been doign BF fr quite a few years now .............
We DO NOY carry cash on BF. Just too much to juggle -- too easy to lose it. I take 2 credit cards (heaven forbid I should have a problem with one!), my license and my AAA card!

Why wouldn't it be? So far we have only witnessed "regional" pricing with Walmart selling laptops at $378, $399, $478, etc.

FYI ... Wal-Mart's ad is already ON-LINE! It allows you to put in your zip code to find the store nearest you and to see THAT store's sale!
Now ... everyone should know how much it's selling for in their area -- no more guessing!

Well ... the Wal-mart flyer is OFFICIALLY out ... at www.walmart.com. You will see the ad ... but will have to enter your zip code. This is the kicker.
I entered MY zipcode and got my local Wal-Mart (Liberal, KS), but the laptop was listed for $488.00. When I entered my brother's zip code (down in TX), it was listed for $378.00 ... that's $110.00 difference.
I don't know WHY ... each of the Wal-Marts are different. SOO .. I'm having someone down there get the laptop for $378.00 (saving $110.00) ... and bring it back to me.
Hope this helps everyone. Might wanna play around with the zipcodes in your area ... to find the cheapest price. Usually the BIG CITIES ... will have the cheapest price.

The Toshiba L25-S1192 notebook uses DDR2-533 (aka PC4200) SoDimm ... It supports upto 2Gb of memory (2x 1gb modules) ... since it ships with 1x 256mb, I'd recommend buying 1x 512Mb ... But whatever you buy, insure that it is _AT_LEAST_ 533Mhz ( DDR2-533 or PC4200 ) and that it is a SoDimm (if it isn't, it wont _fit_ inside a notebook.
@shley
Is this the best recommendation to upgrade the RAM for the bestbuy laptop, or will going lower than 533Mhz hurt the laptop?

I noticed the price difference also. If I look at the Walmart in Waterloo/CF Iowa, the price is $378.. if I look at Marshalltown Iowa (about 30 or so miles away) the price is $488.. Waterloo also has a Best Buy, Office Max & Staples.. Marshalltown only has a Staples

It also has faster RAM, a bigger cache, and a faster hard drive. so yes...it will be faster.
Because it takes more juice to run that stuff, the battery won't last as long, though.

Battery life is an issue that really stands out on the toshiba's, it looks like around 100 to get a better battery, any cheaper options for better batteries?
when it comes down to it with a laptop, if your not mobile, you just have a little desktop with whimpy performance.

Ok, I wanted to make a Post that sums and answers some basic questions so they arnt repeated again.
-Now that everyone says that the CC labtop is better, and that CC is offering a "free desktop" im sure that not soo educated people will flock to CC to get the Desktop which really isnt free.
-Yes, the CC labtop is better out of the box than the BB labtop.
-However, the BB laptop's Ram can be upgraded to 512 for $30 (page 7 of Comp USA's ad bottom left) after a MIR.
-The extra 20GB of memory that the CC labtop has isnt really a big deal. I would store all my big files on a portable hardrive anyhow.
-Circuit City's Laptop is $199 only after signing up for a year of AOL.
-BB's Labtop is $380 no MIRs, and NO AOL!

Yes, everyone should go to BB and get that laptop. At least everyone in Salt Lake should. Leave the CC laptop for me, lol.
In all seriousness, the CC laptop is the best deal. Bigger hard drive, more RAM, and a better screen. All this for $70 more (assuming you're like me and will just pay the $450 and not bother with AOL).
Circuit city it is (for me). I just hope there is not a huge line there all night. And if there is, I hope to be in the front of said line. With 2 friends, so I can get 3 of them, lol.

To address the ram issue, If a Notebook Ram Expert could tell us if we could put in the PC3200 into the PC4200 slot on the notebook.
To address the Norton topic, Most likely if your not skilled at setting up networks, youll have to get another version of Norton. I recommend the Norton Internet Security 2006 3-user edition.

I'm still wondering if you already have a low rate aol if they will let you upgrade. *or* if you have had it before, can you signup for it ...if you live in the same house, but totally seperate accounts. its all legit and want to pay, its just whether they have some odd rule for it.

I have been wanting a laptop, and my dad is willing to buy a laptop for $380 or less.... but I'm having trouble deciding where to go on Black Friday to purchase one! (We don't want to be waking up at 1am just to get there-maybe 4:30...)
I wanted a laptop with 700MHz Processing, 256 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive... I had wanted more, but with this price limit, that is unlikely.
I know you can upgrade some of the laptops- if the laptop doesn't meet the requirements, would it be possable to upgrade?
With all that said, what laptop would best fit my needs, and where could I purchase one?

Go to Walmart.com enter your zip code and look at Friday's ads, what price does it show for the laptop?
If you wake up at 1AM how do you get there at 4:30AM? Is the store 3.5 hours from your house?

Yes the RAM and hard drive can be upgraded. Additional RAM is about 256MB for $25.

Of course 4:30 AM is more practical but I can guarantee by the time you get to Walmart the line will have 200+ people in it already.
Since most Walmarts are allocated 20 laptops per store you should just go back to sleep because you're not getting a laptop :gd_shake:

I wanted to check if you could sign up for $15 bring your own broadband plan, or if it had to be the $24 dial up plan. He looked the rebate up in the system for me and it did give the $15 plan as option. YEEAHH!!

Wanted to let everyone know, I went into Circuit City to check the deal with AOL rebate. I wanted to check if you could sign up for $15 bring your own broadband plan, or if it had to be the $24 dial up plan. He looked the rebate up in the system for me and it did give the $15 plan as option. YEEAHH!!
I know so many of you are anti AOL, but to Pay $180 for $250 savings, I don't care.
It also helps, those on budget be able to take advantage of a few more deals this black Friday.
Do you have to pass a credit check for the AOL deal? Also, can you use someone else's credit card for it?
I plan on taking a couple people with me and getting 3 of them. I would rather carry as little cash as possible. Also, the people I take with me may or may not have good credit. But if I can really pay $180 and save $250 I'm all for it.

I was just at Walmart on Sunday and they were passing out sales fliers for Black Friday. The prices are different then the posted sale ads. The laptop is $378, the TV/DVD combo $98.....
Ok I've been trying to figure out exactly wtf is going on in the last 28 pages and now I've come to 2 conclusions. 1: I have a splitting headache, and 2: I'm still confused on whether to camp out at Best Buy or Circuit City. BB has the lap for $370 out the door, where as CC has it for $199 but you have to do the AOL thing. What is this only having to pay $180 for AOL? If that's the case then I'll go to CC cuz the price will be the same but their lap has more ram and large hd.
Did I figure that out right?

PC3200 ram is ordinary DDR type, while PC4200 is DDR2. DDR so-dimms will not fit in DDR2 slot and vice versa. Performance differences are unnoticeable, but PC3200 is actually faster than PC4200 when coupled with an AMD processor.

Overall, the larger amount of RAM, slightly bigger HD, and the TruBright screen (something you cannot upgrade the BB laptop to) makes the CC lappy my choice.
Add to that, if it's true, the ability to choose the AOL $15/mo broadband plan just adds to its attractiveness!!! We're on dialup actually being out in the country, but "borrowing" $250 from AOL and only paying back $180 on the $250 "borrowed" really appeals to me.....free financing and forgiveness of over 25% of the loan!!!

Oh well it's probably due to thousands of people taking advantage and abusing it. Buying a $2000 laptop, using it then returning it 6 months later when it's only worth $900.

if I'm not mistaken, the warranty for the BB is 90 days, the CC is 1 year. That alone makes the CC a better buy. I can imagine the sales increase for the "Geek Squad" if people just use it with the 256mb installed from BB and wonder why it's so slow.

Okay;I just want to make sure everyone is VERY clear about what they will have to have in hand/on credit/in bank when they walk IN THE DOOR at CC.
Laptop with AOL plan=199.99
Printer (Epson CK3810)=89.99
Router (DLink DI524) =59.99
TOTAL=$349.97
Out of pocket to walk out of the store ;you will eventually get back $149.98;making your price $199.99+AOL monthly fee.($15/$24)
WITHOUT AOL sign-up
Laptop=$450.00
Printer=89.99
DLink Router=59.99
TOTAL=$599.98
Less eventual rebates of $149.98 (again);making your price back to $450.00 with nothing more to pay.
Of course, I assume you could opt not to get the printer and router.
Just wanted to make sure it was summed up! Good luck to everyone; I am still not sure as to the CC or the Walmart, because I have absolutely no use for the AOL and I have all HP products. Hubby knows how to work on them if anything goes wrong, and I have a Media Center desktop I love. I am looking to spend less the morning of,and don't really need to worry about extra hd space. That means you don't have to use the aol service for access to the interent, u can use roadruner, they just are signing you up for their "service" software whatever, just to get $14.95 out of you a month,if you have your own internetconection. If you don't, then they charge you $23.95 a month. It is a one year contract.
So, $15X12=$180. If you sign up, u only pay $199.99 for the laptop,as opposed to $449.99....
So, basically, it saves you $80 in the long run, and instead of paying $449.99 upfront, you pay $350 at the store ($199.99 for the laptop, $149.99 for the printer and Router that are part of the deal), and get $150 in rebates for the printer and router (making them free) that ur getting under the special, and then papying $180 to AOl over the course of a year...
Total price comes out to $380 when all is said and done... as opposed to $449
Sorry if I confused you...

I have taken a dell laptop to greece before (I called them first to make sure I could to this) and didn't need a voltage adapter just the plug adapter. Those you can find anywhere that sells travel stuff. Something about laptops have a dual voltage and will recognize which voltage it is.

Checked my zip code at Walmart.com and it showed laptop at $378, sales paper came in mail yesterday it had $488. Guy in electronics last night said price would be $488 cause that was what was marked on the box. Walmart may need lots of security at their stores over all the confusion on these laptops.
I'm really thinking of just going to Staples and try to get their Acer one ( I believe it was $449) and the printer that winds up being $9.98 after instant & mail in rebates. Was planning on standing in line for BB but I'm getting sick with a terrible cold and don't think it will help me to stay out all night in 30 degree weather. Too bad Staples or Office Depot (I know about not buying at OD!) won't have their items online. Boss said I got put it on company account at either of these places and then just write check to company. That way I could stay nice and toasty and have it delivered! Anyone know anything about either of these laptops? I don't even remember what OD was offering!

Ok, I think I found this discussed on page 17..sorry for asking a duplicate question.
Thanks
My WM gave me very different info. I checked the online ads for the 9 WM's within 50 miles of me. 3 had it listed for $378, the others for $488. I noticed that on the opening page for the WM nearest to me, in Niles, MI, if I looked at pages 2-3 of the main ad it was $488, but if I clicked on the second, one page flyer it was $378. So I called and spoke top someone in Electronics. He said that it would sell for $378.
He said that "someone had gotten ahold of the ad early and publicized the $378 price, so they lowered the price to $378 and ;) printed the flyer ."
Guess this site is really having an influence!

No printer/router needed fo the CC laptop deals. Seems to be a mail-in rebates option IF you get the laptop.
And no credit check needed for AOL. Just a "major" payment card, like credit card or debit card or something they can deduct their fees from each month. Wonder what would happen if someone did try to pay the whole year's worth of $14.95 fees, $180, and demanded the $250 gift card. :lolrun: I'm still a little skeptical about them giving you the full $250 if you sign up for just the $15 per month service. What's the part number on your mom's Toshiba so we can look up the specs on exact processor type, graphics, etc? Even though it's 1.5 years old doesn't mean it's not still good. Might even still be sold on store shelves. Perhaps consider buying one of the BF Toshiba laptops for $200-450 and selling your mom's laptop for a profit.
And I think you mean it has 256 "MB"(megabytes) of ram, not "KB". You can't upgrade the cache if it has 256KB cache on the motherboard. And only 256 kilobytes of RAM would suck. :rotflol:

So it's been pretty much decided that the Toshiba L25-S1193 deal from Circuit City will be the best laptop deal this Black Friday. Add a free router and All-In-One printer, and it just make things sweeter. Here's the info:
As most of you know, Circuit City will be offering this Laptop for $199 if you sign up for AOL service or $449 if you do not. Here are the specs of the laptop is you haven't seem them already:
http://www.circuitcity.com/IMAGE/product/detail/tos/EC.TOS.L25S1193.CN.KPS.JPG
• Celeron® M processor 370 1.5GHZ
• 60GB 5400RPM hard drive
• 15.0” XGA TruBrite display
• CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive
• 512MB of DDR2 SDRAM
• 802.11g/b wireless
Most of the confusion here seems to be with the AOL instant giftcard offer. Let's try to clear this up.
Circuit City and AOL will give you an instant $250 giftcard for the laptop if you sign up for 12 months of AOL service. AOL has 2 types of service plans: the $24/mo dial-up plan and the $15/mo Bring your own access plan.
If you sigh up for dialup: 24X12 = $288 - not worth the $250 savings.
If you sign up for the bring your own access: 15X12 = $180 - Well worth the $250 savings!
There has been some rumors about which plans you can sign up for, and if Circuit City will actually allow signups for the $15/mo plan. Since the fine print on the BF ads are very blurry, it's hard to tell exactly what it's saying, thanky to Tony (from another site) we are able to dissect it and this is what it says:
http://www.adster.net/7.png
12 months AOL commitment (requires AOL plan range from $14.95 to 23.90/month depend on plan selected. America Online and AOL are Registered Trademarks of America Online, Inc.)
http://www.adster.net/8.png
Running man icon are trademarks of America Online, Inc © 2005 America Online Inc. All rights reserved Offer valid 11/25/05-11/26/05
So if that fine print is on the official ad, we WILL be able to sign up for the $15 a month plan, paying in total only $180 for a $250 discount.
What about the FREE router and the AIO printer?
Good question! Despite what you have heard, this deal is optional. There is no one forcing you to buy these, but it's a nice little gift.

The laptop that is going to be at Dell tomorrow for 399, couldn't I just put the DVD burner that I would like on that? Would I have to upgrade anything else on that 2200 to make the dvd burner work well? The price would be cheaper than BB $549 LT with the Dvd burner, and I wouldn't have to wait in line. Any help would be great. Getting this for our daughters graduation, she will need it for college, but I want to have the option of burning dvds on it. Thanks in advance for any help
Now is the Dell that is going to be available tomorrow $399 instant rebate price? Or is it with the $100 rebate that some people are already talking about? Cuz if it is $399 straight up, then I am in :g_thumpsu

Thanks for clearing this up, but...
Directly after the second red box it looks like it says "Gift card good for future purchases only" Hmm...
I'm skeptical of deals like this and it's because of the wording put in the fine print.

From what I can see from Dell's ads the Dell Home notebook is with a $100 rebate. The Dell Small Business notebook (these are the same notebooks just sold by different divisions) doesn't mention a rebate. But the details are sketchy. We may not know until tomorrow.

I agree with you about that section about Gift Card good for future purchase only, but I think they will have a hard time backing down when the front of the ad states that it the $199 is after AOL.
I hate legal wording like that though...

But that sentence is after the star icon, so maybe that only applies to where you find the star in the ad. It doesn't look like there's one by the laptop price.
However, the star does appear anywhere else "gift card" is mentioned.

does that mean you have to pay the 450 and then come back some other time to get the 250 off? That doesn't seem fair, and you're right it seems like false advertising. :(
Sorry for interruption but I was in our local Circuit City. They told me that they are going to get only 5 Toshibas so it's going to be a huge competition.
And another thing yeterday I got in my mail box the Wal Mart's newspaper with all sales for Black Friday. The laptop is for 398. That's all.

So I just checked on line at wm's website and the price for the laptop at all stores within 50 miles of me is 378, but the flyer that I got in the mail says the 488 price. What gives? I'll be upset if I go to the store and wait and then get stuck with a higher price

That guy was pretty serious. But still I am going to camp out near the Circuit City.
I have a question. What if that salespeople will just buy all of that laptops. They are people too, so they will have access to them before anyone else. And we'll come and the laptops are sold out. Do you think this is possible. I mean that only some people would be able to get it.

I hope so.
So the laptop is 450 plus tax, isn't it?
And it will be my first BF sale. So we just run to the store to the electronics secsion and grab the laptop which will be in the box. Correct me if I am wrong
And I know from my friend's experience that last year's BF some people just went to the shop without a line. They pushed people and got in. I wouldn't like this to happen to me.

Will any of these allow me to do that?

I work for a local Wal-Mart Supercenter which has been awarded #3 in the world once before because of the outstanding sales. That is in Rapid City, SD. So I called our local Wal-Mart to talk to the electronics. He said they will have in around 30. That makes sense for a supercenter. According to the guy he said come to the electronics counter and they'll get you one. So I'm thinking there is going to be a small pallet somewhere near the Electronics area.
From what I have heard they have to get all the pallets ready by 4:30 am and in a 24 hr store getting there around 1-2 am would be the right thing to do. I can just see it now, those 30 are going to go in about 30 seconds. I'm going to grab and run! :)
Good luck to you all!!!
This is my version of what will happen :)

crowd was stilll busy fighting each other over some junk dvds players.

You should probably call your CC. I called the one I plan on going to and they will be giving out tickets about an hour before the store opens, so I'll be in line waiting long before 4 a.m. to ensure a spot in at least the first 5-10 people.

IMPORTANT QUESTION about the CC laptop;
SINCE this is mainly a way to get AOL customers; does that mean the AOL software is ALREADY installed on the computer? If so; that is a deterrant from me; having had problems with pre-installed AOL software before. So even if I buy it outright for $450; I will still have to take the preset AOL stuff out? Any insight would be appreciated.

Taking AOL out is easy... Almost all computers nowadays come with it pre installed. Just go to the Control Panel and remove it. :)
So i understand the whole one voucher per person thing. So does that mean there really isnt anything wrong with me bringing my mom and brother along. So that we can get 3? Or is it one per household. (dont think it is)

Haha, I just called BB in Greendale, WI, and the employees didnt even know that there was a labtop for Black Friday, Dumb butts!!! I asked If i could try a demo of a game. They said that i couldnt install demos. I asked if i could run it right off the CD, no installation. They said to buy a labtop, then if the game didnt work, bring it back, and they would "wave" the restocking fee if i bought a different labtop, otherwise there would be a restocking fee. What a bunch of Shi... for Brains.... Soo much for customer service! Im just gonna go in there and do the demo anyhow. There too stupid to figure out what im doing.

This is the Toshiba at Circuit City, right?
Oh, crap. LOL. I need to find out real soon. If it's online, then I need to leave the money in the bank so I can use my debit card. If it's in store only, then I need to withdraw some money so I can have cash for my friends that will be buying 2 for me. Circuit City already told me that they won't let anyone use someone else's credit card. Not even if they're with that person and they both have ID. So I'll need cash for my friends in the case of an in-store purchase. But if I withdraw all that cash (and it has to be done tomorrow because the bank is obviously closed on Thursday, and no ATM is going to let me withdraw $1000) and then it turns out to be an online thing, I won't have the money on my debit card to get 3 of them...

You usually have to use the ticket before a certain time. Last year, when CC opened up at 6am, you had to check-out by 8am. The check-out lines will be looong! You are better off waiting in line, getting your item and running to the check-out line so you can get to the next store.

Called a CC and spoke with the computer department. I posted this in a seperate thread, but not many people saw it and I want to help people out so I am putting it here as well.
I want to post this to answer a lot of CC and the AOL deal questions.
First he was very forthcoming with the info and when I mentioned I saw the ad he said, "It's an awesome deal isn't it!" He said in a really exciting voice too.
He answered all my questions. They will do vouchers (the other CC I contacted is as well, but they wouldn't tell me anything about the deals, just that they would do vouchers for high demand items).
The AOL rebate will work like this....The $15 a month broadband plan is a valid option and will get you the $250 rebate.
You can be an existing AOL customer to take advantage of the deal, all you'll be doing is commiting to another year with AOL.
I was so suprised at how forthcoming with the info he was that I forgot to ask how many they had.
He was also curious as to how I found out about it. He didn't care, he was just curious and thought it was really cool that people know about it.

This is my first post; I found the forum just a few days ago and can not seem to stay away from it now.
1st) I would like to thank all of you for the information I have learned about laptops over the last few days that I had no idea about. It has been priceless.
2nd) I am all set to purchase the CC Toshiba and thought: What if I wanted a laptop with a Pentium processor.
What would a deal on BF look like for a laptop with about the same specs as the CC Toshiba just with a Pentium?
3rd) Where would I find the best deal on a Pentium laptop this BF?
I started trying to put some info together with Toshiba customize and Dell customize (I am not set on any one brand of laptop) and I came up with about $1200.00. Well after looking at the $450.00 at CC that is not a deal for me
But I would still like to know from all of you experts What would a deal on a pentium process look like (how much and what specs? and where would that deal be found this BF?
Thanks again to all that have taught me more about computers than I probably ever cared to know.

Thanks again to all that have taught me more about computers than I probably ever cared to know.
You can do pentium for 200.00 on the Dell Laptop I posted earlier today.

I was under the impression the CC laptop was a pentium, so I checked the adscan and it shows these specs:
Intel Celeron M Processor 370(I knew there was a reason I wasn't going to be buying this one)
DVD/CDRW
512 DDR2 SDRAM memory
60 GB hard drive
built-in wireless
(etc, etc)

Just called my local CC. They said "no Vouchers", first come...
Also said that the $250 rebate applies to a 1 year commitment to AOL.
Only had 18 units in stock as of 11am today.

There really is nothing wrong with the Celeron. It's entirely based off the Pentium. The only difference is 1/2 the cache is disabled. It will still perform very well.

I prefer AMD, as my desktop is an AMD Athlon.
However, I don't think it's fair to base your opinion on an entire company from a bad experience with 1 product. I love AMD, but I am sure there have been some bad processors and you are lucky you just didn't get one of those or you would think AMD sucks.
I'm sure Pentium makes some solid products or there wouldn't be a market for them.

i agree with everything you said.....however, i am and have been a loyal AMD for quite some time. their chips, in general, are cheaper, burn less energy, run cooler, and perform better. while there are exceptions to every rule, i do not think anyone can go wrong going with AMD, especially if you are looking to go high end/top shelf components. all of that said, that does not mean intel can not come through with some products in the future to change this, but that just has not been the case in the past couple of years. with regards to this conversation of cheap laptops, i would perfer the AMD, and will not buy intel, but at these prices if you need a laptop, i fault no one for picking up whatever they can.
good luck to all

I've had 2 pentium desktops (200 mhz and 333 celeron). My current machine is a 4 year old AMD Athlon 1.47 ghz. All 3 have been solid. I beat the heck out of all 3 of them playing games for hours on end, and have nothing bad to say about any of them.
The motherboard went bad on my AMD right when I first built it...but I replaced it and have had 3 years + of perfect operation.

I'd hate to see this laptop thread turn into the fanboy AMD vs. Intel debate.
In all honesty, Intel did steal the notebook thunder from AMD when the Centrino configuration of notebooks came out.....long battery life, good processor performance, etc. AMD is just starting to catch up.
Here's an interesting review from CNet about sub-$1,000 notebooks........they all seem to be fairly comparable to what is being offered on BF....a couple of sub-2GHz cpus of Celeron variety, a couple of Pentium Ms, and an AMD Turion 64 processor. All had 512 MB RAM, HDs of either 40GB or 60GB.....14" or 15" screens. Interestingly, the Turion 64 processor did worse in performance testing than the Intel variants......why? Don't know......AMD does own the Intel cpu right now in desktop performance, but Intel seems to have a leg up on AMD in notebooks.
Anyway, it was an interesting read.........and in the end, at the prices these BF doorbuster laptop are being sold for, one can't make that bad a choice from what's out there to choose from.

I personally think Circuit City is the better deal. you get:
1: Twice the RAM (512 MB versus 256 MB)
2: 50% bigger Hard Drive (60 gig versus 40 gig)
3: Better screen (True Brite versus regular)
All for the same price (if you do the AOL $15 per month deal). Even without the AOL deal, it's still only $70 more than the Best Buy deal.
At this point, I'm hoping to get 4 Circuit City Toshiba's. I'm bringing 3 people with me, and we'll be camping out at 12:00 am Thursday night. We'll sit in the car until we see other people show up. I'm hoping to get the AOL deal on all of them, but if I can't, I'm prepared to pay $450 + tax out the door for each of them. That deal is just too good to pass up...

CC is the best value if you're willing to spend $450.
BB is the next best value if your limit is $399.
CC also has shorter lines than BB does.

keith_dude
11-23-2005, 2:17 PM
Yes--the CC laptop is a better deal. For $70 more, it's well worth it to get the bigger HD and more RAM. If I had a CC in my town I'd go...but the closest one is 60 miles away and I don't feel like being an hour away with the in-laws watching the kids for the night. The 2 year old is sick. Being able to get home to the kids in 5 minutes is something we need. My wife can always leave me in line and go home if she has to.

Since I'm in Wisconsin with the $632.00 laptop, and no one in there right mind would pay that, can I go to Walmart in Wisconsin buy the laptop at $632.00 and then bring it to a Walmart in Illinois to price adjust to $378? Hmmm...I'm pretty sure, no one will be waiting in line to pay $632 for a laptop when Best Buy and CC are so much cheaper...so there should be plenty available, and Illinois is only about 30 minutes from me....any thoughts?

I was going to get the WM HP but, the CC Toshiba looks to be the better deal. Looks like I'll be in line at 11:30pm with a bottle to pee in in hand..... as the BF deals are all over the web.
Anyone else going to the CC in Port Charlotte Florida??
I just had a thought about lines.. Odds are CC lines won't be as bad. The non deal site and Tech Savvy will more than likely just looks at prices, and not Delve into comparing specs. They'll see the BB, WM, CUSA, etc all are advertising a laptop for less than $400 they'll not bother will specs and go for price so the CC BF Laptop will be on the bottom of their lists.
Anyway...

YEPP, OK so I went to BB today. They have this stupid always-on-top program advertizing BB, and Ctrl alt del cant touch it. To get rid of it, kill the power and right as the computer starts, push ctrl alt del. This will let you exit it. Now for my tests on the Gaming:
NOTE: THEY HAD REMOVED THE S25-1192 FROM THE SHELVES, SO I TESTED IT ON THE S25-1194 (1.4GHZ CELERON M, 512 RAM, RADEON X200 M GRAPHIC CHIP)
I tried a demo of Need For speed Underground I
- It ran at extremely fast with no lag at all.
-It ran faster than my desktop (2.6ghz processor, Nvdia FX5200 graphic card, 768 Ram)
I also tried the Halo Demo on the labtop.
-It studdered a bid loading because it was running of a cd-rw, and not from the hardrive, but once it had full started up, it ran pretty smoothly, also better than my desktop.

Hi, first time poster here, but I noticed everyone had questions on the circuit City laptop. I work for Circuit City, and here's the deal:
It's 200 dollars with the 12 years of AOL at 25 bucks a month.
HOWEVER
We were told by managment that the same 250 dollars off applies if you only get the 15 dollar a month AOL for broadband. So, the total would come to around 380 dollars for the laptop. Get it while it's there, each store is only going to have 15 laptops.
(I'm sending my mom to get me one in the morning myself)
