Do people usually get the extended store warranty for their appliances? Lowe's said it was $159 for both for 5 years, 100% covered and serviced by the local Lowe's, not Samsung. That sounded good to me since I've read about people needing service on occasion but I didn't know. I usually don't buy an extended warranty, but I usually buy electronics that in a couple of years are out of date and can be gotten cheaper anyway.

People don't usually get them. HOWEVER, I work for an Electronics and Appliance Manufacturer in Customer Service (won't say which) and I HIGHLY recommend it!! You never know when you're going to need it. Better to spend $159 now, versus $600 down the road.

I would say check reviews and look at reliability figures of each manufacturer. Consumer Reports has been saying for years that they are a waste of money and I tend to agree. I guess it also depends on how much the warranty costs. In your case I have to say that $159 for BOTH actually seems like a pretty good deal for an extended warranty. For that price I would probably consider it. If it was $159 each then it wouldn't be worth it IMO.
I remember Comp USA used to really push extended warranties to the point I wouldn't shop there anymore. One time I was looking at a $600 laptop and they insisted I needed the $300 extended warranty. I couldn't justify paying 50% of the cost of the product for a warranty. To me that would be like buying a $30,000 car and spending $15,000 on an extended warranty.
Why you don't need an extended warranty (http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/money/news/november-2006/why-you-dont-need-an-extended-warranty-11-06/overview/extended-warranty-11-06.htm)
I don't usually buy them but I got a front loader with dryer a few months ago at HD and did get the 5 year warranty. Mine was $99 each but got them (w&d) for a good price plus 10% off.

Remember if u are a homeowner and u have a home warranty then ur major appliances should be covered under ur warranty program.

I got Lowe's to take 10% off the price of the W/D and it was about the same that they offerend the 5 year warranty for. Considering we know nothing about working on the front load washer, I figured it was worth it. My last washer last less than 5 years because I have a habit of starting and stopping a cycle and it tore up my selector switch. I would have been more to replace the switch and have a service call than just replacing it.
We purchased the extended warranty for our washer and dryer and it has saved us $$$$$. Definitely worth it!!
