View Full Version : When do you start wrapping the presents you get?

I am horrible at this and each year I tell myself I will start early, but I normally don't start til the 23rd and do the bulk on the 24th. Unless I am going to visit relatives, then I wrap their presents earlier. When do you start wrapping your presents? Anyone have any advice to get motivated earlier? I love wrapping, I just can't get motivated to do so!

I always come home from shopping on black friday and sit down and wrap all the gifts that I got that day and anything else that I have that I haven't wrapped yet. I normally put my tree up before thanksgiving but the last two years I wasn't able to because of remodeling and so those two years I came home and put the tree up after shopping and then wrapped so I didn't have empty tree!

I used to save most of the wrapping for Christmas eve. It was tradition to have a glass of wine, listen to Christmas music, and wrap presents. I think this year I'll wrap most of the gifts early and just save a few to wrap Christmas eve. Getting to bed at 3 a.m. and being woke up before 8 isn't a great way to start Christmas day..lol

Tell me about it! I normally stay up til 3AM or so and DS gets up around 6! I can't do that this year being pregnant. I am dead by 9PM!!!

we always but the tree up thanksgiving weekend and then I start wrapping a bit each day while the kids are in school, it is so fun to watch them come home and try to figure out what the new things under there are!

I put my tree up Thanksgiving weekend and wrap the next weekend. I get out the ironing board (it is tall and my back doesn't hurt if I wrap on it), make sure my Black n Decker electric scissors are charged, divide the gifts by family, double check my list to make sure I have something for everyone and wrap. Ti usually takes me two days to wrap, ribbon and tag all the gifts.

I usually wait for the first Christmas cartoon to come on TV and then I just sit in front of the TV and wrap. This year, though, I'll probably wrap my DS's gifts on Christmas Eve after my he goes to sleep so he won't spot his early!

I've already started. I got the kids a few things on clearance and no place to hide them...so I HAD to wrap them. Got some wrapping paper down from the attic when I brought the Halloween stuff down. So they're sitting on the floor in my closet, of course the kids have already seen them and it drove them NUTS for about a week. But they seem to be over it now.

Usually I wait until the week of Christmas but I kind of like having those wrapped presents out of the way...I just may wrap as I go this year.

I usually wait til the last weekend or right before the kids get out of school for Christmas Break. I always have to take things back (I buy too much too early,or find a better deal) so it does me no good to wrap early.

Last year our electricity was out for 5 days before Christmas and to say I was a little stressed over last minute buying and all the wrapping to do was an understatement. Trying to pull out everything and wrap in the cold and dark was a pain. I lived thru that (the electricity came back on at 3 p.m. Dec. 23!) so I know I can handle just about anything!

My goal every year is to wrap as I go. I'm usually good up til kids get out of school for the holidays, then have to plot and plan. Being pregnant take advantage of those days when you think you feel a little energetic and know you are going to have some time. Make sure you arrange a place to have support for your back. I have twins and they were born 03/15/01. I could usually get on the floor with the coffee table, wrap, take a break and press your back against the couch, will feel good. However be forewarned your pelvic area will go numb, so make sure you have help up, and re arrange yourself often. Have fun & Good Luck!!! Congratulations!!!

Last year I thought I was done Christmas shopping and had everything wrapped within a couple of days of BF. Then Amazon started having great deals on toys that I just could not pass up, but all my kids already had more than enough. So, I went through, unwrapped a bunch of stuff, and took it back to the store.

So then I start getting my Amazon stuff in and was really procrastinating getting it wrapped. Christmas Eve comes around and I have about 20 things that need to be wrapped. Not too big of a deal... until the power went out. It didn't come back on until midnight. I was up SO late wrapping (I'm a S-L-O-W wrapper)... then I had to wake up at 6:30 and get breakfast started (in-laws were coming over at 7:30 for breakfast and presents).

This year, I need to find a balance. Only wrap gifts that I know won't be returned on BF weekend, wait on everything else, but make sure all gifts are wrapped before Dec. 20th. I prefer watching Christmas movies and tracking Santa's flight online with my kids on Christmas Eve to staying up by myself wrapping gifts.

I usually try to have everything wrapped by the time of our yearly christmas party. It's nice to have things wrapped and looking pretty under the tree. This year the party is a bit earlier then normal (Dec 5th), so I'm going to have to push to get things done early!:)

I am glad I am not the only mom up until late hours. We were up last year until almost 4am. AND I do start early in December, I just buy so dang much. This year I plan to wrap early for the most part. My daughter is with her dad this year on Christmas morning so it wont be as important to have them all wrapped for the morning.

We never put one thing under the tree until Christmas eve. We always enjoy the surprise factor on Christmas morning. :)
Too bad I will miss that this year :(

I wrap a.s.a.p. because I get all overblown and artistic with it. My motivation to start early is my excitement to wrap everything. I do it all up with ribbons and candy and stick with a color theme. I only wish they would let me get my fix out at work. Company doesn't wanna invest in paper this year :(

Up until last year when Madison was old enough to be told- you open, it goes back- I did all the wrapping on Christmas eve. Last year and this year, etc they get wrapped and go under the tree once I get it up. I'll start wrapping the day after the tree is up and ready :)

Up until last year when Madison was old enough to be told- you open, it goes back-

that has always been the rule at our house too. I only had to take back 1 gift and that was the first year I imposed that rule. It made a huge impression that DD now 18 shared quickly with her younger sister now 15.

My mom would only shop at the mall cause they did free gift wrap!

DD and Dh go shopping Christmas eve for me(usually while i am wrapping) because they know I will tear the house apart looking

I normally put my tree up the sunday after thanksgiving I wrap the rest of the gifts as i go my hubby jokes with me saying that i purposely buy things no one needs just to have something to wrap lol i love it!!! I also leave the bows for christmas eve it takes me and my hubby the entire length of "a christmas story" to move all the gifts and my hubby has to go get his gifts for me from his mom(he dont wrap lol) and anything big we get our son. I seriously go overboard to have one 2 yr old and a hubby to buy for BUT i want my kids to have that memory of the WHOLE living room being filled with gifts like mine was when i was little(of Course i had 6 brothers and sissys but still lol...) Heres a pic of my tree last yr

I usually wait until I am almost finished shopping. Then I pull everything out of its hiding spot and lay it all out. That way I can see if it all looks even. I like my kids to have the same number of gifts, so I can wrap smaller things together (or seperate them) so that everyone has the same number of packages to open. Sure you can make a list, but I am a visual person and like to see it all spread out.

I am hoping to get things wrapped a few days before Christmas this year. I have been collecting toys from clearance sales throughout the year (Target and Kmart had some great toy deals), so I don't think I have to do any real shopping, at least for the kids. I was just collecting toys that I thought were cool, thinking that one of my kids will eventually like it. Otherwise, it will go into a birthday gift or donate pile. Now I need to decide what I am giving each kid and put them in a seperate place to wrap. It would be nice to go to bed at a descent hour on Christmas Eve.

I wrap as I go.. have it alll organized and listed out when to wrap and how much to buy....

Oh hell, who am I kidding. Lol. ;) I work overnight (and working now) and usually wrap when I can. And yes, half of it is done the night before even tho I have MOST of the presents already sitting here. Procratination is my friend :D

I actually have half of the presents already. But TWO of my three kids have December birthdays and so does my hsuband, so December is nuts at our house.

chilimak
10-17-2009, 8:21 PM
We also have 3 December birthdays in our family, so its crazy at our house too. 2 of my kids are a few days before and after Christmas. I usually wait till early December to wrap. I have to sort out birthday and Christmas gifts and wrap accordingly. I also like to wrap my kids same but different gifts in the same paper. Like, their new pajamas, their annual ornament, their gift from grandma in another state.

I love wrapping though and usually do it when the kids are at school on one of my days off. I turn the lights on, put on Christmas music, and have a blast.

Oh, and those of you looking for wrapping paper, Hallmark has it out now. I work at Hallmark and we put our wrapping display up last week.

It depends when I see the person. I start with the gifts I give out before Christmas and go in order.

I normally work on Christmas Eve, I am usually sooo slow and bored I tell the other employees to bring in their unwrapped presents and I will wrap their gifts for them. My gift to the staff!

I used to worked for a candy factory (ala Lucy!) and I had to wrap candy boxes all Christmas long. So I am an expert wrapper and make my own bows.

Sorry for going off topic!!

leefamily23
10-17-2009, 9:21 PM
I usually wrap some every weekend starting in early December. My son spend usually 3 weekends w/ his dad, so my husband and I have those free to wrap. He's really good about helping me, so w/ 2 of us it usually takes us about three 2 hour sessions to get everything wrapped, tagged, and "prettied" up w/ ribbon and bows.

elena_398
10-17-2009, 10:29 PM
I start wrapping as soon as the tree goes up. Usually the week of my son's birthday in November

Hummin Bird
10-19-2009, 12:42 PM
This is gonna sound weird I think, but I wrap 2 times each season however the first time I wrap it isnt really presents lol.

When the tree goes up on thanksgiving, I get a bunch of differnt sized boxes and wrap them really really pretty (foil paper, ribbons, bows, tassels, all kinds of trinkets lol) but nothing is inside them, they are purely for decoration and suspense (it kills my kids because they never know there are no gifts in them, its hillarious to see them try to sneak and shake the boxes and things like that lol)

The second time I wrap is on Xmas eve, its a tradtion for me and DH because Im an accountant at a marketing and advertising company and he's a garbage man, so the holiday season and end of 4th quarter/year is really hectic work schedules for us. So on Xmas eve when we put the kiddies to bed we break out A Christmas Story and Miracle on 34th Street, get a nice bottle (or 2 lol) of wine, turn the lights down jsut enough to still be able to see to wrap the gifts. Its really the only "holiday" experience we get to have alone.

As far as wrapping paper and accessories, I have absolutely obsessed. I have one of the those storage sheds out back (looks like a little house) and its filled with nothing but xmas decorations and half of it is nothing but wrapping paper and bows and ribbons and foil and tissue paper, and and and lol. The list goes on and on. I also make my own bows :D

Just 2 days ago I bout 20 rolls of wrapping paper from the Dollar Tree (i mean who can pass up sponge bob xmas paper for a buck a roll!) and DH was livid lol.
The summer we went through and "cleaned and organized" the storage shed and I had wrapping paper I had to throw away because it was deteriorating (sp) :(

Funny story so i went to walmart the other day all by myself and notice that they were putting out the xmas stuff so i decided to take my 2 1/2 yr old and hubby there to watch me gaulk at all the new paper and bows bags etc well i am addicted to rudolph lol so i had to have a new bag they had lol well we got home and my son runs strait into the closet where i hid the gifts last yr and starts pointing at the door screaming "ho hos in the woset toys! mommy! toys!" lol it craked me up needless to say this yr since he knows who santa is i will have to be SUPER carefull about wrapping and hiding them lol (last yr he opened his huge firetruck behind my back lol(he had knew what the box was like b/c he saw it when i got it on BF i guess!)

LOVE the ironing board idea!

I usually sit with my back against a radiator (nice and warm :D) and wrapping between my legs.
Here's a tip for you early wrappers like me:

I wrap stuff going to each house (not each person, each location) in color coded paper. Then, each person within that house gets a different bow.

So, for example, people who will be at my mom's Christmas Eve are all wrapped in a red paper.
My middle sister's two gifts have green bows, my youngest sister's two gifts have blue bows. I never use gift tags. I just remember the color bows (they are always the same...when I started, I wrote initials on the bottoms of the bows).

I group each "house"'s items together in the closet. Then, as we pack up to go to each place, I put all the color coded gifts into a laundry basket. This keeps them from rolling around the back of the SUV and makes it a whole lot easier to carry them all together over snow and ice.

Hope that helps!

I want to wrap NOW.........but there are 10 other things I should be doing...
Most of the stuff I have is for my younger son and I usually write down/mark the presents, because sometimes they need to be in order.. Anyone else do that?

Like if you get your kid a leapster, you have to make sure she/he doesn't open some of the games first--which almost look like a DVD box, because once they open game, they'll know that the other box is the leapster..
Oh, but I don't feel like doing the writing part, I just want to wrap stuff, I am weak...

I start wrapping when I have everyone's presents, which is normally the week after BF, and I put them all under the three at the same time. I probably look at that tree like 100 times. I just like to see it full of stuff.

Well I did round 1 last week because my mother's birthday is on BF. (She wants her Christmas presents on her birthday and her birthday presents on Christmas. Says she wants to enjoy any christmas related stuff all month.) :D Of course Mom could not wait and opened them yesterday. (Said she did not want to open them in front of her sisters on Thanksgiving.)

Spent all day today wrapping and ribboning and tagging. Will take them over to my parents on Thanksgiving. It's my "childhood revenge" BWAHAHAHAHHAAHAAAA!! :g_dance: Now my parents have to look at them ALL month and can't touch them until Christmas!!! heh heh heh.

(The older they get the harder that is for them too! They come up with "clever" excuses to open them too...2 years ago I caught Dad opening stuff because "he had nothing to wear to the senior center christmas party and he knew I had bought him some new clothes" !!!! :eyepoppin Sneaky, sneaky old people!)

Will do round three in about 2 weeks. That will be the ordered stuff that is taking its dear old sweet time getting to me plus any impulse buying I do on BF. Today was the BIG push though.

This is me :holiday02 for 2 hours today and I loved every moment!

I am nearly done :yup: DH took everything I had done over to a relatives to hide :cheesy: I am thrilled as I don't have to be on constant security guard duty for the next 4 weeks...

The only thing here are the teacher gifts. I am much more organized this year. . . :D

However, Only have 1 tree up inside...still didn't begin the second. :(

Over the weekend I got about 75% of my wrapping done! I'm feeling kind of burnt out on wrapping, so I'm taking a break for a few days until I'm back in the mood. That way it feels festive and not like a chore. My kids' gifts are wrapped and under the tree, so I don't have to worry anymore about them finding them... I'm just worried about DFS2 unwrapping all the presents, so I'm keeping a close eye on him. I may have to put up a gate around the tree...

My kids are enjoying seeing all the gifts under the tree, but it also seemed to trigger a countdown for them... especially DS4. Every time he sees the presents he asks, "Is Christmas today?"

I am all done wrapping everything that was bought in person. A few items I ordered online and didn't ship to folks directly should arrive this week and I will wrap those and not have to worry about gifts until a couple days prior to Christmas when I will go pick up stocking stuffers. :-)

No school still for my kids today... I think I will start wrapping more this week. I have about 25% done. Which is slow for me. I usually try to wrap as I buy.

I got my stocking stuffers done this week end so I'm officially DONE shopping.

Of course I just bought two more gifts for my kids... Oops. lol. Miley cyrus book for my daughter I forgot she wanted and the Family Guy seasons 1-7 DVD boxes set for my son. Gotta watch my impulse buying from here on out. lol

I haven't even started wraapping yet. I need to as I have already bought so much. I always end up putting it off and then stressing over it the last week or two before Christmas.

Right now I have everything hidden in a room in the basement. This is my "special" room. The kids know they are not allowed in "my" room so I dont have to worry about them seeing anything.

We are Christmas Eve wrappers. My dh and I pull out all the presents and separate them into a pile for each kid. Then we each wrap a pile. I think we just like to do it together.

I started wrapping the morning after black friday. I was too exhausted after shopping black friday.

I had my gifts wrapped before I had my Christmas tree up. Now my Christmas tree is up and all the gifts are neatly tucked under :) Whoo-hoo, I love Christmas.

I did clothes last night however there's tons of toys and electronics that still need to be wrapped. I had every intention of wrapping tonight after work once the kids were sleep, however I woke up feeling a little under the weather so straight to bed I go. I can only get it done @ night or if hubby takes all the kids out for a while.

I wrap right away. As soon as the kids are in bed, my husband unloads whatever I've got stashed in the back of the van, and then I wrap it and tuck it into super safe hiding spots. :D The oldest is at the age where I suspect she may start snooping either this year or next, so I like to be sure that if she sneaks a peak at presents.. she still doesn't get to see what they are. :)
