View Full Version : Will the price of gas affect your BF shopping?

I was just thinking about the cost of gas and started wondering if it will change the way everyone shops. For instance will you to go fewer stores or skip some store all together because it would cost too much in gas to get there?

Not at all...I have to work Friday, so I'll be shopping online. It wouldn't affect me, anyway, since I live within a couple of miles of anywhere that I would shop locally.

It won't affect me personally, but I know it will hurt a lot of people in my neighborhood. We don't have any big retail stores here other than Walmart, everything else is about an hour away. I bet there is going to be a pretty good increase in online sales.

Rising gas prices don't really affect us since:

We drive a fuel efficient Honda Accord 4 cylinder.
We earn 5% cash back with our CitiBank credit card (http://www.sunspotweb.com/aff/34F104F75B5756F5FB44?5FD51798897B7B070C9E4ECD05A5767313765BB215) (which has no annual fee).
We only drive 6,000 miles per year, roughly 1/3 the annual average.
I refuse to buy into the hype that gas is going to skyrocket and everyone will be buying scooters.

It's the same here. I live in the country and the closest walmart and target store is about 20 min away. Everything else is 30-45 min. I'm going to try to get several people together to BF shop this year. That way we can carpool.

It won't affect me - Friday's my day off anyway, so instead of spending the gas to drive to work, I'll use it to hit the stores. All of our places are pretty close in proximity.

I just love the words FREE AFTER REBATE so much that it prolly will NOT affect my BF habits...lol

Besdies, maybe I don't drive a HONDA, but I DO drive a VW that gets 28 MPG city, so I'm pretty good there....

Yep we Hot Dealers commonly refer to FREE AFTER REBATE as FAR :)

That's impressive mileage, is it diesel?

Right now it's under $3 here in MS but this time last year I was buying it for under $1.50 ....I miss the good ole days.

Its been at a steady increase for the last couple of years out here. It will stay at a certain price point for a few weeks, then increase a little, then stay at that for a few more weeks.

It's pushing $3 here, at $2.99

but, no.. I'll still be going out. :)

Nope, it will not. I have decided I am not going to stop living my life because of gas prices. I just started dating a new girl that isn't exactly close, but I'm not letting the price of gas stop me from dating her.

I'm just going to eat PB&J during the week. ;)

It won't effect me at all. All the stores I go to is in the same area. (Mall area about 10 minutes from the house).

I live only 5 minutes from Super WalMart and 10 minutes from Target, Best Buy and Circuit City. Gasoline is $3.29/gal here and there is plenty of it.

outnumbered
10-3-2005, 3:01 PM
No, because every last store in the area is either practically across the street or all the way across town, and the nearby ones don't have what I need...so if I need toys/clothes/appliances/electronics/*whatever*...I tend to wind up at the mall, at TRU, or Target, and those are all a 20 min to half hour drive. So really that encourages me to do BF because I can get deals on things that one day and not have to make multiple trips down there.

We carpool anyways...meet up at a central location, park 2 cars, take 2 cars. Drop off items as needed. Everyone splits gas, so no one is out a large amount. Works for us!

10-12-2005, 9:28 AM
It will affect all of us. Remember all those great deals have to be trucked to the stores. An increase in gas prices will mean an increase in a stores prices.

My hope is that loss leaders still bring in enough customers that purchase more items, for the stores to keep up the BF practice. I generally purchase just the lowest priced items and not much more.

Sorry my first post sounds so negative, but I am a addicted BF shopper so I will be out and about.

Keep up the good work GottaDeal and all posters on hot deals.

Affect me? Nah. Darren's new job is so close, we can spit on it. Its accross the street. by car, 1 minute... LITTERALLY. So he walks. We will PROBABLY be driving up to his moms...and spending the night. Spendng the night either way. I cant stand my local walmart. So I will go the 45 minutes to there..

I will still be shopping like there is no end! :) Our gas has gone down from 3.09 to 2.88 in the last 2 days, so hopefully it will be more "normal" by then!:D

Trishy
10-12-2005, 10:21 AM
It won't have any effect on my shopping. Luckily most of the stores are less then 10 minutes from where I live.

elena_398

As long as the stores on BF give the deals, I will be there.

AuntJamelle
10-12-2005, 11:26 AM
Won't affect my decision to go or my shopping! Prices have come down to about $2.77 here and have remained steady for about a week. I too am hoping that they will come down more before Thanksgiving gets here.

All of the stores I plan to hit are in the same area and are only 3 miles or so from my home.

I will be going for the great deals, of course, and if those don't appear to be on the horizon than I may not do as much shopping, but I'll still go.

Rossman,

"I" know it's FAR, but I didn't know if everyone called it that or not, so I spelled it out.

No, my car isn't deisel, just standard transmission VW. they always get mileage like that.

Gas won't affect whether I go out or not. The mall is literally 3 blocks away, I have two Wal-Marts that are no more than 5 miles away a piece, and Target is just as close.

The only thing I'm dreading is the traffic....it's going to be horrible.

Here in Canada we're paying $1.06/litre the price just dropped 10cents a litre 2 days ago, which works out $3.37 US a gallon, so you guys still have bargain gas south of the border! Won't stop us, just encourage me to make sure I " fill 'er 'til she spills" before heading home!

It won't affect me. I live less than 10 minutes away from most of the stores (wal-mart, target, best buy, circuit city, office max, etc.). Only Staples is about 30 minutes away and we don't have a CompUSA in town. The closest CompUSA from where I live is in downtown Chicago, which is about 2 hours away.

Most of the stores are together or on the way to the ones that are together, so it won't stop me from going--all at once shopping is conserving gas!!

elena_398
10-16-2005, 6:38 PM
I haven't filled up my one vehicle for 3 weeks. Im stay at home mom so I don't have to go places all the time. Now I conserve gas by staying home and only going out if needed and for the kids after school stuff.

All my BF stores are relatively close. A bonus this year is Target moved in up the street

I travel about 60 miles to go to Target and other stores, and I will be affected. I am still going, maybe I can convince my mom to go and drive.

Not at all, I am driving DH's truck this year (mine is wrecked in the garage) so I will just burn up his gas!

Seriously, I would shop wherever regardless. I usually fill up the day before Thanksgiving, so I am ready to roll on Friday. We don't run around much anyway so $40 in gas isn't going to kill me.

My sister in law and I have a system, I drive, she pays for breakfast and lunch. DH and I have "almost" twin SUVs, lot of room to fill up with the bargains!

That's impressive mileage, is it diesel?

28mpg is impressive? That's sad.... If a diesel got that, then either something's wrong or you're talking about a really old diesel (my 85 Mercedes gets almost 30mpg highway, so city mileage would probably be a tad under 28mpg).

Everyone IS buying scooters! On our way back home yesterday, I saw what looked to be two large scooters, would have thought they were regular motorcycles at first. Two-seaters, windshield, all that stuff (didn't get a much better look than that). We also saw a scooter strapped to the back of an RV with a milk crate attached to the back (where a trunk would normally go). Plus there are two crazy people in town here who have bought two full-size electric scooters (full-size as in, they're two-seaters, have working lights, etc...not the kiddie scooters at Toys 'R Us). Of course, those crazy people are us.

I buy EVERYTHING on BF ONLINE! Toys R us has great deals and free shipping....and I hate those old ladies that elbow me and run me over with their carts.
Problem is, my boys are almost completely out of the "toy" stage. But I found great Narnia stuff that is coming out in Nov. at TRU online, and still got the free ship and BOGO on board games....even the Narnia GBA game....
All I'll need to get is stuffing stuffers at the Dollar Store.

It's $2.89 a gal. in my neck of the woods, down from $3.29. Scooters are great if: a) you don't live in the country, and b) it never snows where you are.

:2dog:

When you can get free shipping online, it pays to stay home on BF, alhtough I do admit it's great fun!

Hrm, I live out in the country AND it snows here. To make matters worse, we live on a road that has "Hill" in its name (so, it's pretty steep to say the least). That's ok though, we just use them when we want to ride around, or go somewhere locally (not much to do), and drive a car everywhere else (work, shopping, whatever).
