Money, ds lite, ipod--It's generally not real cold here and although I might bring a chair as my back is getting older, I like to travel light!

Nahhhh...The people in line are "moderately" nice.
;)
Plus the Wii will be in a tent where there will be 7+ people in it.
I highly doubt anyone can sneak in, swoosh the Wii, and run away without being noticed.

:D
I would not use a charcoal grill for heating. It produces carbon monoxide and will gas everyone near by. You should get a camping heater. Coleman has several models that you can use inside a tent or close area. Below is a link to the heater.

No they have not. Once you are in line for 30 plus hours you become friendly with the people around you. So if someone nears you needs to potty or get food they will ask if you will hold there spot while they potty and they will do the same with you. It is a honor system. If you do get up to go get food then you must offer to get food for the people around you. Once it is time to put away your stuff people around you are doing it but just remember who was in order. You might take turns doing it. In the lines I have been in this takes place around 1am on Friday for a 5pm opening. Again this will all depend on the people around you and how quick you make friends.

It varies from store and store. We have had reports in years past where the people in line were rude and such. Other reports we get that every one in line plays nicely. I hope everyone plays nice. :) BF is a full contact sport and you will find that once business picks up that this site has some of the most serious and professional BF shoppers in the world that post here.

I missed this last year. You really sit out there for 30 hours? WOW! Do you go by yourself or with someone? Do you buy for only yourself or do others in your family have you get things for them? Is that the only store you go to?
I go with my son and his girlfriend and a friend of mine, and we split up & get in line at different stores or like in Kohls take turns shopping while someone gets in line, or go into a store and split up each person grabbing a certain item.

Yes I do really sit there for 30 hours and it may be longer this year. Just depends on the intel I get here. :)
When I stated to do this 5 years ago it was just me but over the years I have made alot of friends and it has grown to about a group of 30. We all stay in touch during the year and do each others birthday and holidays. Best Buy is the only store I go to since I feel they have the best sales year after year and the ticket system is one of the best out there. You asked who I buy for. I mostly buy for me and close family.

I meant does your family have you pick up things for them? And you don't go with anyone that you know outside of BF/BB line? I agree, other stores could learn from best buy, I think circuit city has started doing something similar.

My family does ask for me to pick up things for them but they know that I dont like to do that. I tell them if they want something really bad that they have to sit in line for me. I do invite friends who I have not met in the BF line but I have found out that they just dont understand BF and why anyone would camp out.

That but for the past two years I have become known to the store manager, district manager and the employees at BB that they will give me the WEP key to there secured network. Since I go to the same store every year the district manager and store manager have me in there phones and vice versa. They asked one year and I jokely said a internet connection and 10 minutes later they came out and gave me the WEP key. It pays to be loyal.

I agree with everything BigJim has said. You really get to know the people around you. Last year, there was nowhere open in teh shopping center we were at, so we carpooled in groups to the gas station a block away. It was actually really cool. We didnt have a tent, but will this year. It was in the high 20's, but the wind was brutal. I brought an MP3 player, that I hardly used, my DS an a few games, also hardly used. Blankets, jackets, etc. And a nice lady who did have a tent shared a hand warmer with me, which I will DEFINATELY bring this year. DH stayed home with the kids, and a friend went with m. Just so happens he's a pretty big guy, so I wasn't worried even if things did get out of hand. But it was great. Everyone worked together to make it a fun time. And after tickets were passed out, thats when we all put our things away. By that point, you have been there 24 hrs or so, and there is no question as to who is where. The police officer did tell us tho that we had 30 mins, and if we were not in line by then, you would lose your spot. Best Buy is by far the most organized when it comes to camping out, and that is where I will be again!

Make sure it is something good like Mexican food.
1. Rent a Port-A-Potty to which you hold the key
2. Serve food that makes you go

I was at Wal Mart today and looked at there tents. You want a tent that does not require stakes since they are kinda hard to use on concrete.
Below is a good tent that I have been using that is easy to put up.
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5493340
And if you live in the cold you might want this as well. I used it last year and works great!

I don't wait in line in the morning but last year I waited for around 2 hours to check out at Kohl's. I'll be bringing a portable DVD player for us to pass the time.
The extent of my BF 'camping' expierences was last year at Kmart on TG to get a Wii. I got there at about 3am and was the second person (it was in a pretty small town). I only brought a chair, a bunch of blankets and a book. I just chatted with the woman who was before me and we had a great time!
Besides that the only other waiting was done in previous BFs in Walmart (24hrs) and that was only about 2 hrs by the pallets of stuff.
This year will probably be different since there are more 'hot' items that we want to try for, so all of this tips and lists are very useful!!

WM tracks all the sales in real time and I would love to hear what they had to say when they sold out of the same tent and the same Coleman heater within a 2 hour time period.
As a good guy that I am I did help everyone put there tent up. After about the 3rd one I can put up the tent in 4 minutes. They are very easy tents and can be setup by one person.

I have a question about the port-a-potty.. how big was this? Did you run out of capacity? Also, did people give you any negative vibes for charging?
I'm looking into doing this.
Also, where did you keep it, right beside you?
The port-a-potty is a 1 person potty like you see at any work site. I get mine though a motion picture company that provides stuff like this to movie sets.
I did not run out of capacity. I do BF at a very busy Best Buy and I had them drop it off on Wednesday around noon and the pick up was on Friday afternoon. I put the port-a-potty on the side of the store away from the line and front door. Some people did give me crap about charging but after I told them that I was paying for it and if they did not like it they could go down the street they calmed down.

I want to camp out now, I just need to find something to go for.
Hmm... a nice 22" monitor, or a $200 desktop perhaps?

Ah, I was hoping it would be some kind of smaller one. I wonder if I can rent one from a contractor sales company or something? Did you run into any health ordinance people or get any beef about that? I was thinking of just getting one and putting it in the back of my pickup and let people use it.

Would you have steps to get into the back of your pick up?

When you say put it in the back of your pick up what do you mean? Remember you are dealing with human waste.
You can rent port a pottys from contractor and special event companies. You just have to call around and see who will give you the best deal. As far as the health dept I did not have to deal with them but I would check with your local city. The port a potty company could tell you.
I dont know if I ever explained this on here or not on why I rent one. I have been doing Black Friday for 5 years now. Each year I make new friends in life and because of that my group grows. Our group stays in touch with each other during the year. We do each others birthdays by going to dinner, stay in touch by emails and facebook, and we do each others holidays because there are people who are Jewish, Hindu, Christian, Muslim. The reason I rent the port a potty is for the comfort of my group which is about 60 people large but only about 20-30 camp out each year. Just last year I started to change people because one guy offered to pay to use it so it just caught on. The reason I have been successful in it as the nearest restroom is a mile away.
I am a hardcore Black Friday shopper and I do alot of saving for BF so I can rent the potty and have money for extras when in line. If you are going to rent one to make extra money I wish you all the best and I hope it works out. Just be sure you handle it like a business decision and make sure you have no other potties in the area.
I hope this helps. Any any more questions if you want and welcome to the community!

I plan on bringing:
me in extra warm clothes
a friend or two
some snacks and drinks
phone
money/debit card of course
and the ads a MUST
and a purse big enough to hold it all
I usually travel light I don't want anything holding me back of course I will have to end up finding a potty since I'll be 22 weeks prego or I just might wear some Depends lol and I might get some of those spiffy little hand warmer things
I might get some of those spiffy little hand warmer things
Hand warmers are almost a must now. Just make sure you get the ones that don't stink. I don't remember the ones I've bought before but as they warmed up, they STUNK. Make sure it says no odor or something like that on them. Trust me, you'll thank yourself afterwards.
The funny thing is when I was at BB last year everyone else wanted my tent so I told then where I got mine and everyone else in line got the same tent. See the pictures below.

oh, I hardly am the most prepared. Mr. Mayor BigJimSlade here certainly out does me. he has quite a large crew, and does what he can to accommodate them all. my list might seem like alot, but it was fairly detailed and looked much longer. all of it fits in a couple of large plastic tote type boxes.
we pack stuff up when it is nearing the time for vouchers/tickets to be handed out. no matter how well people have behaved up until then, this always creates a mob frenzy. we dont want to deal with keeping our stuff safe and secure along with getting our item tickets. it does kind of suck, because once those are handed out, it is usually a 1-2 hour wait before opening, and now everybody is standing and crowing for that entire time.

I don't think I'm doing the overnight thing this year (gasp); I just don't want to spend the money on big ticket items. Of course, I will be shopping.... and then getting to work by 8 am. I should probably mention that i work directly behind a shopping mall. So I'm not worried about entertaining myself for hours, but I am interested in being dressed for work. Sigh, no layers of pajama and sweat pants.
I'll likely just carry ads, breath mints, coffee, and a credit card.

Jim thank you soo much for posting the tent. My son has a tent on his X-mas list and red is his favorite color. I'm not sure if I will be camping out for an item because I never have before and I will need at least 1 person to go with me to make a tent worthwhile but if the deal is good enough I'll do it.

I am bringing the kids (5, 7, & 9), it has become our tradition and they talk about it all year. Lots of stuff to stay warm (propane heater, 2 k-1 heaters, and a generator with a space heater to go inside the larger tent. Two tents (smaller for sleeping goes inside the larger), air matress, chairs, Thanksgiving dinner, plenty of snacks, Boy scout popcorn (for the hungry who came unprepared... helps our local troup and feeds the crowd, plus I get a letter from BB saying it is OK in case the police decide to give me a hard time), hand warmers, and my wife and the baby will be on stand by 2 miles away and will swoop in to pack everything up before the doors open.
I am also concidering the PP idea. Thinking about trying to get some local sponcers so no one will have to pay.

Wow!
I've read through all of the posts and there is some great advice out there. This will be my sixth BF adventure and each year I learn another trick or two about making the time more comfortable and productive. Here are some of the biggies:
1. It seems obvious to anyone on this site, but planning several days in advance based on the ads is crucial. If you plan on making more than one stop, you need to chart out which stores open at what time and try to plan your choices accordingly. For example, last year I wanted a item that was selling at both Best Buy and Target. Target was cheaper because I had a local coupon, but opened an hour later. I also wanted something from Home Depot. For me, it made more sense to spend the extra $20 at Best Buy just to make sure I could get to Home Depot in time.
2. Scout your locations in advance. Know where the items are going to be located inside of the stores. Many BF items are not located in their traditional departments that morning. I always call to ask about locations and quantities.
3. I don't care if it's forecast to be 85 degrees and sunny...bring a tent. First, if you've been standing in the warm sun all day, even 65 or 70 degrees with just a wisp of breeze can feel mighty cold. Also, it helps to define the boundaries of "your space". The line will start bunching up as time goes on.
4. Always have at least one person who you can call to bring you things when needed.
5. When deciding which stores to go to, keep in mind what "facilities" are going to be available during the overnight portion. If bathrooms aren't going to be readily available, control your fluid intake. Usually, I've had great cooperation from my fellow BF-ers about taking turns to go to the bathroom and get snacks. But, I always bring an empty 2-quart Gatorade bottle just in case. (Yes, I know it's a little gross. But this is War!)
6. Make friends with your neighbors in line. Not only for the ability to have them hold your spot when you need to jump out to go to the bathroom, but also for cooperation in getting your items. Only the really big ticket items get tickets or vouchers, but many others are just as highly sought after. For example, the lady I sat next to a few years ago at Wal-Mart was after a TV and some toys. I wanted the same TV, one toy item and something from housewares. The three items were on opposite corners of the store and the TVs were on pallets in a first-come, first-serve area. She was an older woman who would've had a hard time manuevering around with that big box on a normal day, let alone in the riotus conditions of BF. So, we agreed that I would grab a TV for each of us and she would get the smaller items that I needed. We met up in a quieter part of the store to exchange items and went to the checkout.
7. I always have a plastic tarp to go over the tent and another one for underneath if needed. Some rope and duct tape for securing everything if conditions turn sour is also a must.
8. If you're doing the really long wait, bring a small table.
9. Baby wipes and paper towels. Hands wil get dirty and messes will happen. Plus, a couple of plastic bags for the trash you're going to create.
10. I have a change of clothes in the car for emergencies anyway, but I always make sure I have extra socks. If you're out there all day and your feet sweat (even just a little), you'll appreciate the dry pair when the temperature starts to drop. Then, you can put the stinky ones by the door of your tent and people will be less likely to bother you. I also bring my cheap fuzzy bathroom slippers (the ones that look like loafers). Combined with good socks, they really keep your feet warm. Besides, this isn't a fashion contest.

My group usually brings a soccer ball for a little parking lot soccer :). One year we brought a cooler full of beer and entered Best Buy a wee bit tipsy. Unfortunately that was also the year that we were in immediately but had to spend nearly *FOUR HOURS* inside the store waiting to check out even though we had everything in hand nearly instantly. Sobering up in that line wasn't the most fun I've ever had on a Friday ;).
