View Full Version : Salvage/Discount Groceries
I was just wondering does any one here shop at salvage/discount grocery stores? FYI- stores that sell dented canned goods/damaged dry goods. I shop at one of these stores and get some really great bargains. Name branded goods like campbells, betty crocker, ect.. the prices are all $1 and under. I recently went shopping and got campbells soup at hand for 75 cents a cup chex snacks 50 cents a bag (big bags). Just wondering does any one else shop at places like this.
toebaby 4-10-2008, 1:43 PM I have never seen one in the Indy area, but if anyone knows of one let me know.
tiredmom214 4-10-2008, 2:05 PM I wish I knew of a place like this around me. I haven't ever seen one though.
they've all disappeared from the area.
elena_398 4-10-2008, 3:03 PM Never heard of a store like that around me. Lucky you.
I know my grocery stores has their own little section of stuff (a small corner with dented items but no store just for that sort of items)
bugsette 4-10-2008, 5:16 PM wish we had one around here
jluce61998 4-10-2008, 6:39 PM I have never seen one in the Indy area, but if anyone knows of one let me know.
I haven't seen any in the Indy area, either, but I'd love to know if anyone else has.:)
amyers12345 4-10-2008, 6:54 PM lol.. my grandparents have one about 1/2 mile away up our dirt road 10 miles out of town.
I'm not huge on shopping there, we don't eat much boxed/canned food. I do occassionally go for a few things.
If you eat stuff like that, it's good.
We have one about 20 min from here. I would get really good deals but my husband has banned me from there as the last time I went we bought some expired toothpaste... had no clue toothpaste expired.. do now and never want to taste that again!! If you check the expiration dates you can get some great bargains.
christib327 4-10-2008, 9:32 PM We have a couple close by. I buy soups every now and then. I've also bought cereals that just had like the corner of the box smashed. I am really careful about expiration dates though.
my2kidsmom 4-11-2008, 12:18 AM There is a great one in Grenada, MS. Starbuck and Seatle's Best bag of coffee for $2.00!!!
Unfortunately, I'm almost 2 hours away.
I did find this directory

oneannm 4-11-2008, 7:24 AM Can someone tell me what the name of these stores are?
I already shop at Aldi's, but would love to know where to buy name brand bargains....
his_lil_gemini 4-11-2008, 9:17 AM i think we have one here in memphis. but i dont know exactly where or where to find out anything about it
We have as much as you can stomach around these parts! They're awesome...I save sooooo much money on food shopping! I just recently picked up Tropicana Pure Pomegranate Bluebery Juice 20 of them at $10 (.50 ea), Aunt Jemima Buttermilk Complete Pancake Mix 10 of them at $10 (.99 ea), bread (.49 ea), Gatorade 64oz (.99ea), Pillsbury Strudels 12-pack (.99 ea), Minute Maid Assorted Fruit Juices (.99 a gallon), Dole 100% Pure OJ 64oz (.99 ea), Turkey Hill Duetto Ice Cream (.99 ea), Wendy's Fast Food Restaurant Seasoned Grill Chicken (yep you read right...Wendy's) ($6.43 a bag), Oscar Meyer 30-pack of franks ($1.99 ea), Cheez It One Pounder (.99 ea) and a bunch of other brand name goodies! Originally being from Jersey stores like this were unheard of and easily used to spend $200 on one small cart of groceries at Shoprite. Before moving here I started shopping at Aldi's, to get a reprieve from Shoprite, and although they are cheap the stuff isn't brand name.
Can someone tell me what the name of these stores are?

Try Amelia's, Sharpshopper or any of the local Amish discount joints. You're in the adjacent county next to me so you should have no problem getting to these stores! Happy discount shopping!
There's one right down the street from me, but I haven't been there yet. The sign out front says they have frozen foods too.
I don't do dented cans. Won't buy them, just can't make myself.
But I would love to shop one of these places for maybe some dented box items, or some other flaw.
persse3 4-11-2008, 7:51 PM I have one here and I love the place. I just have to watch the expiration dates closely. My hubby hates when I go there, but I save a ton of money.
geomacey 4-12-2008, 6:24 AM OMG, I go at least 2-3x a week. The cashiers even recognize me and don't ask for id anymore ... in fact a few weeks ago, I didn't make it in because we had a family emergency that I needed to deal with and when I went back, they actually greeted me as I walked through the door and asked if everything was ok! How sad is that?!?!?
I get everything from cleaning stuff to health and beauty stuff to dog stuff to food there ... Starbucks coffee for $4.50, fresh bread, buns, bagels, english muffins $1.25, cereals from $1.60 - $2.10, salsa .79-$1.50, the list goes on and on......
Yes, you have to check the dates and watch the damages, but it's definately worth it!!!!
Aww, crap. I made a point of looking today to see what the name of the one down the street was, but I've already forgotten it. I'll look again next time I drive by it.
my2kidsmom 4-12-2008, 8:21 PM The one in MS that I go to is just called Discount Grocery

cpsagentri 4-12-2008, 8:52 PM funny because the wife and I ran into one of these places by accident.
We were in/near Bennington Vermont and I pulled over to use my cell and Jill was
bored and ran in i think it was called bent and dent on rt 9 i think.
she came out with four bags of can goods. she was all excited becaus eshe makes her
own sauce and they had the crushed type she uses for 75 cents.
I really wish there were some near us they were neat.
btw i so want to move to Lancaster PA i loved Amish country.
the only place I know of is continental sales on 63rd & cicero in chicago. if you are on the mailing list they have a 20% off coupon in their sales flyer one weekend a month too. anyone know of other discount stores in chicago or the south/southwest suburbs?
kmbrly 4-13-2008, 12:33 AM Ok, I guess this one by my house is just called Grocery Liquidation Center. I also found (through a google search) a place called A Discount Grocery on South Blvd (in Charlotte).
Wow! I didn't realize there were that many of these type of stores around. LOL I'm not as special as I thought (jk) The place I shop at is called Pat's Discount Salvage located in Houlka Ms right on hwy 15. Any on else here from Ms wanna share some good places to shop?
kmbrly 4-21-2008, 11:06 AM I saw this video today on charlotte.com about discount groceries.

(I tried the copied link and it went straight into the correct video, hope that doesn't change as they add videos).
mostangs 4-22-2008, 12:08 PM We have one place in Jacksonville-FL, that isn't so bad -- but we've travelled to Charlotte to visit Ricks -- and the others in the Charlotte area. I wish everyone could visit Ricks -- it's the best!
I've filled a freezer full of good stuff for $100!
I love those stores, but we don't have any real good ones here.

Someone just metioned to me a store named Sharpshopper... Could you tell me where it is?
Are the prices there worth the drive for me? Thanks

Andrea -- check for an Amelia's Grocery Outlet near you: http://www.ameliasgroceryoutlet.com/locations.html
For Berks County, the Blandon store is probably closest to you. Amelia's also takes manufacturers coupons, except for Tropicana and one or two other rare brands (they don't double coupons though). They even have a e-mail based mailing list and run coupons in the Coupon Clipper.
Some things are close to date (or just past), or they had a label change, or good food that is past the occasion (ready-to-bake Christmas cookies after New Years, etc.) or occasionally the wrong thing put into the container (OJ w/pulp in a carton labeled pulp-free -- a sign on the shelf will advise you of that though).
They also get a lot of damaged cases -- grocery stores will refuse a case if even a corner of the box is damaged (affecting just one of the boxes of food), so Amelia's will get it.
In Blandon, there is also Buy Rite Liquidators, http://www.buyriteliquidators.com. But, they are awful -- everything is expired and/or damaged, the store is dirty, and I swear I saw a rat scurry across the floor the last time I went there (which was about 4 years ago).

I've never been there, but here is SmartShopper:
http://www.insiderpages.com/b/12374595094
Leola is south of Adamstown and east of Lancaster. I don't know if it would be worth that kind of drive unless you live in Shillington (southern Berks County).
Shortness 4-25-2008, 11:59 AM Is this like a Grocery Outlet? We have those, but I've never heard of anything else in this area.
crzytxnjenn 5-2-2008, 10:34 PM When we lived in Pierre, South Dakota we had the Bent N Dent. I LOVED that place! I'd go there first to see what I could get that was on my grocery list, and THEN go to the grocery store to finish my shopping. With the canned goods you had to pay CLOSE attention to expy dates but with boxes it was all flaws like smashed corners or the cardboard got slit by a razor.

Yes, I shop the .99cent only store all the time. I also go to a bargain outlet store and get like cans of soup-3for a dollar. Walmart is cheap on some food stuff as well, like the bags of chicken thighs, they are under $4.00 and at Safeway, the same 4 lb bag is over $6.00 a bag. I don't know where you live, I am in CA. Good luck on the bargain hunts.
I go to the dollar stores, bargain stores (almost expired foods, foods that were damaged before making it to stores, etc.) and then the bread store which has tons of breads for way cheap. We just freeze the breads as soon as we get home as they are near expiring, of course.
I wish we had more scratch/dent stores for food though!
Wow we don't have anything like that around here.
We do not even have a SuperWalmart or SuperTarget either :(
We do have dollar tree but they mostly sell cookies and candy

That's the same here. Though ONE DT does have frozen stuff, but it's a lot of junk - no frozen veggies or anything. :/
Kara1204 8-27-2008, 6:25 PM We have a salvage grocery place here. BUT, it is in the heart of the ghetto in a building that should be condemned. I am scared to go there. :o They advertise in the paper all the time, little 2" ads, but the prices look pretty good. Maybe I should strap on a gun and check it out!
