I can't even remember how long I've had Capitol One. Started with 1k credit line and they automatically moved me up to a 3k credit line because of my payment line. I have ALWAYS paid on time and paid wayyy more than minimum amount.
This month, payment was due on the 21st (YESTERDAY), and today I went to go pay and they have slapped me with a $35 late fee.
Idiots. I will be calling them to discuss it. Just letting everyone know about Capitol One's great service to good customers.

Before you write them off, call their customer service and explain your situation.
Most lenders will be kind and offer a "one time" exception for waiving a fee.

Yea, that's what I'm planning to do in the morning though. I just can't believe one-payment late and this huge fee, I usually pay at least triple of what the minimum amount due is. Maybe in their computer's it's just automatic to charge that fee, no matter if the customer has a good payment history or not. *shrugs*
Yeah, it's probably automated, saves a lot of time on their end.
Usually they'll waive it once like RossMAN said so give it a try.
Every CC company does this. The day it is late, you get charged a late fee. Most Visa and MC cards are $35. All you have to do is just like Ross said. Explain to them your payment history, and ask for the fee to be removed. They will do it for you.
Uh... no offense, but that's not bad service.

What I didn't like about Capital One was they changed their policy and started charging a monthly fee for all credit card accounts with a credit limit of under $250. Mine was only $100, and had been for several years. I asked for an increase and was told they don't review accounts for increases at the customer's request...it was at set yearly times. I was annoyed that after several years of a good history, they hadn't upped my limit from a measly $100, and that they were going to start charging me a monthly fee. I closed my account with them instead. And I have a nice $1,000 limit from someone else, so HA.
The late fee thing sounds typical though. $35 sounds high to me--I've seen $15 to 25 more commonly--but the fee being charged the day after the due date is totally normal.

mugs - You're correct, technically and legally Capital One is well within their rights. If the OP reads their credit card agreement it clearly spells out when a late fee will be charged. If the payment is not made on or before the due date, it's late. Whether you're a new or existing customer, the same rules apply.
outnumbered - Unfortunately more and more credit card companies are charging $25 - $40 late fees. They have to generate revenue somehow.

Yea, I jumped on the gun saying they were bad. I just called and they did waive it.
However. Is Capitol One an outsourcing company?
