Buy Bear Stearns Stock?

Don't laugh - would it be smart or stupid to purchase Bear Stearns stock with it being so low or do you think the company will vanish?

It's gone. $2 a share. Lots of millions lost......

I've often comsidered buying a stock when I think it is undervalued, particularly a strong company (Intel, Apple, etc.) Unfortunately it doesn't always work. I thought Countrywide was a value when it hit $10/share, down from $45. It kept going and is now at $5-$6.

So it can be a crapshoot.

Were consumers allowed to buy the stock at that price? I thought it was just that price b/c for the takeover?
