Online banking, I do this with 3 local bank accounts I have now. The savvings rates at ING are 3.4%, much higher than my local bank. I am considering opening up an account with ING. But I have never had a true on-line bank account. I am a little concerned about linking ING to my home bank checking account. Should I be concerned?

I have a paypal account, but I set that up with a checkng account at another bank that is not tied into my home bank.

I am just a little nervous about depositing quite a bit of cash into a online account.

It's FDIC insured, and deposits are made just like direct deposits or a standard check. Their username and password security is better than any other bank I've used.

They offer online banking in eight other countries besides the US and they run national TV commercials, yep, you should be safe:

Here's an article from Time Magazine that featured Arkadi Kuhlman, Chairman, President and CEO of ING DIRECT:

You know, it's funny I actually spoke to a director at one of the local credit unions (because of work) and he brought up ING. Apparently a lot of the credit unions HATE ING because ING is essentially able to do what they're not able to. ING's spiel about having no over head sounds like a marketing gimmick, but it's absolutely true. They're able to offer such good savings rates because they don't have 8 offices in every major city.

It's definitely going to be interesting to see how the traditional banking industry adapts to ING, emigrant, and the likes. For now they have their old time customers who are still 'weary' of the internet, but that isn't always going to be the case.

I opened each of my kids ING accounts a few years ago when they offered a FREE $50 deposit, don't remember the specifics just know I opened 5 accounts with a VERY SMALL initial deposit and got $250 FREE ($50 each account) I eventually closed the ones in Dh and my name but still add to my kids weekly. They beat any other savings account I could find even after they have dropped rates SEVERAL times which is the only things that concerns me. ...

I think you are definatly 100% safe! But what do I know I bank(wells fargo) and do all my bill paying online even my mortgage and car loan! ;)

we've had our account at ING for over 4 years. they are FDIC insured (as someone else mentioned). We've deposited money and withdrawn money. We use it to hold our 6 month emergency living expenses and other savings we do not need immediate access to.

USAA is essentially the same thing. I've had them for a year and had no problems.

Along with most credit unions. My credit union doesn't have branches either. You can auto-deposit your paychecks or mail your deposit in. And get money out at an ATM machine. I love it, no lines to wait in...

ING also has a checking account that gives you a better interest rate than most traditional banks. (we have just never gotten around to joining our credit union since we have ING.)

Their ATM network isn't substantial, but luckily there is one nearby. Since so many people do online bill pay, they saw it as an opportunity to launch another product.
