Wondering if anyone knows someplace where you can put in the citites you will be traveling through and give you the tourist hot spots? We have decided not this summer but next we will be driving from Texas to Cali. With a stop in Tombstone as that is the "reason" according to my husband for this trip. My reason is of course Disneyland lol. So we will both be happy. We just are going to take it slow and easy and wanted some can't miss places along the way.

I have been looking for something like this, also...
Callie, which way are you going? If you're traveling down I-40, the petrified forest is in Holbrook Arizona. There is also a large outdoor dinosaur 'muesum' there. It's a drive around thing with tons of life-size statues that the kids can climb all over.
Only thing I know of is a GPS system. Maybe Google maps has something.

Try... www.roadsideamerica.com
We used it when we went to Texas last summer. It will show you the oddball outof the way fun stuff as well as the local stuff to do and see. Kinda like being able to find the worlds largest ball of string... thats also how we found the Dr. Pepper museum in waco. Its just kinda fun... I think you can also go by your local AAA office... and they will give you thick guide books of the states your traveling through... they have the highlights in them... and if your a AAA member... you get lots of discounts on admission to a lot of these places as well.

On a side note
Tombstone is sooooo cool-we were there last July when we went to visit my uncle who lives in Sierra Vista. I really wanna take the beans there this yr...so much history in that town and the boothill graveyard

We are going to be mostly on I10 or so it looks. Not 100% sure. But we could always detour a bit ... that is what a road trip is about right?
Thanks for the site jax they have some really out there sites to see lol.
Pastasalad Is there any pointers you have for me?
Sadmom are you guys going to decide and plot out your course before you go? I always wanted to go on a seat of your pants kind of trip but I am not really a seat of your pants kind of person so I probably owuld have to be on Valium to do it lol.
Dmmiller that sounds like a blast too. ;)
Ahhh Geez I thought I was getting invited on a road trip too:o Well I am sure you will have
fun and that I will be jealous!
PS
I had to work all day today and I got a call from a family that was driving from Mass to FL
and they had a very car sick child..was vomiting every 30 mins or so...now that is a trip I
don't want to be on!! I told Mom just think only about 30 more hours and you will be at WDW
and he can vomit on the rides then...poor kid...he must be miserable

Well these arent really pointers but rather things we enjoyed. I would say definately go into Big Nose Kates and have lunch, there are many shows/gunfight re-enactments all over town, if I could choose just one it would be the OK coral re-enactment. Everyone in town dresses the part so you could just stroll up and down the streets going into the one-of-a-kind shops and really enjoy yourself.
The Boothill Graveyard is really neat, the fee is "donation" based so it can be very affordable for a family.
Not sure how much time you plan to allocate for Tombstone But you could easily spend the whole day there. The town has so much History, we really enjoyed ourselves, I know your whole family will enjoy taking a step back in time...
We really want to take the beans on our way back home-Tombstone is one of their all time favs

I live in Tucson and am very familiar with AZ. If you have any questions or need help, feel free to PM me. I-10 runs through the city; as it does in Phx.

Eww Tokanm that is not good poor little one. :(
So my question for you guys that have been how many days should we take in Tombstone to see it all. I do not want to rush him, as this is his trip year and is being nice agreeing to drive on in to Ca lol. We have 11 to 14 days or so it looks total. We will spend 3 or 4 in California.

Take a day for Tombstone and you can also drive to Bisbee, AZ. They have some cute shops and there was a mine there. It's a cute town. Kartchner Caverns is supposed to be pretty cool. I haven't been but heard it's neat. Tucson has Colossal Cave and the Desert Museum. HTH

I was going to suggest a full day as well. I would save Boothill Graveyard for when you have finished all your activities on Allen St-the main st in town, since BHG is a lil drive. They also have Wyatt Earp's home that you can tour
Bisbee is a neat lil town they have the Queen Mine tour-very informative and you can't miss the Lavender Pit Mine while in Bisbee.
Back in Tucson is Saguaro National Park-while some may find it boring, but being from Oklahoma I have never seen a Nat'l park dedicated to cactus-we enjoyed our drive through the park.
My Uncle said Kartchner Carverns is BEAUTIFUL-we didnt have time to go :( -it is a highly protected cave meaning they button down the hatches like fort knox, to preserve the cave.
Fort Huachuca in SierraVista is an active military installation-my Uncle took us through and again lots of history on the Buffalo Soldier.
Look up in the sky when you are in or around Sierra Vista for the big silver bullet-it watches for illegal immigrants crossing the border. Some of the stories my Aunt & Uncle told us were just amazing...

See he was thinking 3 days there lol so would we be bored spending that long there?
pastasalad
2-17-2008, 10:36 AM
well I wouldnt say bored...but, it is a small town. I would think spending one day and the night would be plenty of time BUT I know everyone is different and if he wants to see all the shows you might need more than a day & night. Please know I am no expert on Tombstone-it's just still fresh on my mind since we were there not to long ago...

Check out the Reagan Library in Simi Valley. This place is awesome and you can tour the the Air Force One that served as the “Flying White House,” for President Reagan and six other U.S. presidents from 1973-2001. Here's the address: 40 Presidential Drive
Simi Valley, California 93065

I am the Road Trip KING! :D
I agree with the Regan Library. For Arizona I would recommend the following.
The BioSphere in Oracle - Great place, eco friendly and the kids will learn a LOT too!
http://www.b2science.org/
Ruins of Casa Grande - not much to it but worth looking at.
http://www.nps.gov/cagr/
The Titan Missile Museum in Spring Valley - Close to Tombstone and well worth it!
http://www.titanmissilemuseum.org/
If you can see "the Thing" in Dragoon go do it! it also is home to Hitlers Rolls Royce. best dollar I ever spent.
Need more ideas just ask :P
